[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1617535] Re: geoip.ubuntu.com does not utilize HTTPS

2017-09-26 Thread xtsbdu3reyrbrmroezob
@jim no the ubuntu security team also did not respond regarding this
issue. unfortunately, it is actually being abused by the great firewall
of china to spy on ubuntu users within the border of china. from what we
can tell, the ubuntu security team does not take nation state level
issues very seriously, which is unfortunate, since google is one of the
largest commercial users of ubuntu distro and they are the main target
of nation states.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1668321] Re: Vulnerability allows read/write/exec access on Ubuntu 16.04 Screenlock as lightdm user

2017-03-07 Thread xtsbdu3reyrbrmroezob
Nice find. There is another lock screen bypass that still exists if you
hold right click option down before the screensaver activates. I don't
believe that has even been fully and properly patched and has existed
for years. And now the accessibility features seem like ripe targets for
further review too. Makes you wonder just how many other local bypass
issues still exist (or have been planted by espionage agencies).

Bug description:
  Hi,

We just found a vulnerability in lightdm who could lead us to read files with
lightdm permissions, an also write in some directories.
We were able to download a reverse_shell payload and execute it in order to
gain a reverse shell as lightdm on a remote system.

The exploitation require a physical access to the locked computeur and
the Wi-fi must be turned on. A access point who let you use a
certificate to log-in is required as well but it's easy to create one.

Then, it's possible to open a nautilus window and browse directories.
We also can open some application such as Firefox which is useful to
  download malicious binaries :-)

Brightness controls are not working in Unity / Xorg because of Nvidia
  proprietary driver.

Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers-340 package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers-375 package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Affects: Ubuntu 16.04 and 14.04.
Occurs only with Nvidia proprietary driver. Nouveau works well.

Brightness controls are not working in Unity / Xorg. When pressing
the keys and on my Lenovo W510, I see the
indicator on the screen showing the level of brightness changing, so
key mapping is not the problem. However, the brightness is not
  changing.

On the kernel level, I have the single following device:

  # cd /sys/class/backlight
  # ls -l
  total 0
  lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Nov  3 17:16 acpi_video0 ->
../../devices/pci:00/:00:03.0/:01:00.0/backlight/acpi_video0

When playing with the and , the value of
  /sys/class/backlight/brightness changes accordingly. The screen
  brightness does not change.

  Performing:

  # echo 10 >brightness

...does not have any effect (regardless of the value provided, 10
  being just an example).

  WORKAROUND

There is an odd workaround. Simply go to the console using
   and using the and keys,
brightness then changes. Return to Unity / Xorg with
  and the selected brightness persists.

  NON WORKING WORKAROUND

On the web, I read that adding:

  Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1"'

in xorg.conf might fix the problem. I do not have an xorg and when I
let the proprietary Nvidia driver generate one and add this option, X
  does not start anymore.

Title:
10de:0dfa [HP EliteBook 8560w] Changing the screen brightness does not
  work anymore in 319.xx

Status in Nvidia:
  Confirmed
Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers-319 package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
Changing the screen brightness always used to work on my HP Elitebook
8560w -- both with the function keys and in the dialog "Brightness &
Lock" in the system settings. The environment light sensor also used
  to work IIRC.

Since the update to 13.10, this stopped working. Methods I have tried that
didn't work for adapting the brightness are:
  * Adding GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi_backlight=vendor" to /etc/default/grub
  * Adding GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=”acpi_osi="!Windows 2012" to /etc/default/grub

Currently I am changing the brightness manually using xrandr --output
LVDS-0 --brightness 0.9. However, AFAIK this does not really change
the brightness, but only changes the contrast.

  WORKAROUND: Use nvidia-graphics-drivers-304.

2017-02-12 Thread xtsbdu3reyrbrmroezob
would be great if nvidia could explore why the brightness gets properly
restored only after a sleep and is not polling the brightness properly
in real-time

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1445523] Re: gnome-system-log segmentation fault

2017-01-18 Thread xtsbdu3reyrbrmroezob
This bug persists upstream in Gnome, with no full resolution still.

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=802334

This bug still appears to be present upstream. The segfault now occurs
not on opening, but instead when you click any sidebar item like "All
Logs". I think a longer term fix should be proposed.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1363670] Re: 8480dn

2016-10-29 Thread xtsbdu3reyrbrmroezob
the driver appears to be corrupting the printer in some way. brother has
the same problem even in their windows drivers, at least in earlier
versions. the only "fix" is to break up every print job into 1-page
documents, send 1 page, let it print, reboot the printer, delete the
printer, re-add the printer, send the next page, etc... until you finish
printing. this is really poorly designed. may only affect the USB
printing. brother says "direct printing" works just fine. i take that to
mean networked printing over port 9100 / jetdirect works fine. its the
USB printing thats the issue

Status in cups package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Terrible print drivers for the Brother MFC-8480DN (connected via USB
  to the computer).

I've been running Ubuntu since version 10 and in five versions the
supplied Ubuntu drivers have never worked.

Sometimes I get double copies when I choose one copy. Sometimes
nothing prints. Sometimes I get the message:

  ERROR NAME;
 ioerror
  COMMAND;
 image
  OPERAND STACK;
  10
  --arraytype--
  10
  0
  --arraytype--

Sometimes when sending a job to the printer, it just shuts down and
reboots. Sometimes it prints gibberish or blank pages. It happens
whether I print from Firefox or Open office.
