(not the original poster) I am running VirtualBox with USB passthrough,
and using a connected scanner works, and with no scanner connected I get
a proper error message...

I tried to recreate, but I get the No scanners available message when
I do so.. Thus, this does work on my box at least.

This looks like your running virtualbox -- is usb enabled for the
virtual machine?
