I have a this problem on 14.04 on desktop pc. Sometimes when I suspend the fans keep spinning and I have to force shutdown the computer. MB: Gigabyte B75-D3V with integrated GPU. I can't check whether trusty's alx kernel module works with suspend now as I don't have the hardware. If anyone wants to try, run sudo chmod 0 /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/50unload_alx to disable the workaround, then try to suspend/resume.
