The problem seems to have corrected itself with a reboot. I shall mark
this as invalid.

Just for information, even when I ran pasuspender I couldn't start jack,
but the error messages in that case said the sound device was being used
by freedesktop.org rather than pulseaudio. It may just have been
coincidence that the problem occured after the distribution upgrade.

  Cannot launch jackd while pulseaudio running since upgrade to Trusty

Status in “pulseaudio” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  While I was using Saucy I could launch jackd and pulseaudio would
  configure itself nicely as a jackd client. Since upgrading to Trusty I
  can no longer launch jackd because the audio interface concerned is
  "already in use" (by pulseuaudio). I am pasting the output of
  qjackctl, covering a few attempts to connect, below.
