The problem seems to have corrected itself with a reboot. I shall mark this as invalid.
Just for information, even when I ran pasuspender I couldn't start jack, but the error messages in that case said the sound device was being used by freedesktop.org rather than pulseaudio. It may just have been coincidence that the problem occured after the distribution upgrade. ** Changed in: pulseaudio (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to pulseaudio in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1312607 Title: Cannot launch jackd while pulseaudio running since upgrade to Trusty Status in “pulseaudio” package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: While I was using Saucy I could launch jackd and pulseaudio would configure itself nicely as a jackd client. Since upgrading to Trusty I can no longer launch jackd because the audio interface concerned is "already in use" (by pulseuaudio).
