The basic issue is that I got a new Asus S400CA laptop. It has a combo
jack for headphones/mic (like phones do now). With Windows 8, the
headset worked fine (both input and output through the one jack). With
Ubuntu 14.04 it works for output, but not for input.

It's been almost a year. I'm now on 15.04, same laptop, same issue. I'm completely lost here, sorry. How can I figure this out, and if I do how does it help?
