[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1353185] Re: Chromium 36 upgrade will not execute

2015-01-01 Thread Frederick L Shope
On my original post for my AMD Athlon(TM) XP 2400+ machine, I was
running Ubuntu 12.04. Since then, I installed 14.04, which I most
recently decided to overwrite with Debian 7.7 (because Ubuntu no longer
provides a video driver compatible with my hardware -- but that's
another story). What I wanted to report here, for what it's worth, is
that Chomium won't execute under Debian 7.7 either. I get about the same
error message from a terminal execution as I did from Ubuntu.

2014-09-27 Thread mullah20144

I received the Chromium 37 update via the Update Manager and installed
it (thank you). However, Chromium will still not execute on my Athlon XP
2400+ machine. I now get the following screen output when executing from
the command line (which I did not get with version 36):

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1353185] Re: Chromium 36 upgrade will not execute

2014-08-27 Thread Florian W.
Michael Gilbert of Debian apparently carries some patches for chromium
that supposedly get rid of SSE2 instructions in the Debian chromium
package (at least in experimental?). User opera posted a link to the
corresponding bug report in Debian. I'm not sure what the status of this
is or if Ubuntu would be willing to use the same patches, as they seem
pretty untested and impact/maintenance burden for future chromium
releases is not clear.

I wouldn't recommend using Chromium 34, as each of 35, 36 and 37 has a
lot of security fixes that are not in 34. So that would be somewhat
dangerous. I also don't know about an easy way to revert to 34, as most
PPAs or other repositories are probably updated by now. Maybe you can
find the old deb files somewhere.

Consider using a different browser :/

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1353185] Re: Chromium 36 upgrade will not execute

2014-08-26 Thread Florian W.
Frederick, there was no chromium 35 in Ubuntu if I remember correctly,
so you are probably talking about Chromium 34 (that was the current
version in Ubuntu until a few weeks ago when it was upgraded to 36).
Chromium 35 has stopped supporting non-SSE2 Linux systems because,
according to Google, there are exactly 0 Linux users without SSE2. I'm
sorry, you don't exist.

See the chrome bugtracker link above:
The good news is that for Linux (as opposed to for Windows), there are zero
 pre-SSE2 users
out there, so bumping the minimum requirement from P3 to P4 [..]

Also, AMD processors apparently do not exist in the Google universe, so
now we have Pentium 4 as the minimum CPU requirement. :-)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1353185] Re: Chromium 36 upgrade will not execute

2014-08-26 Thread Frederick L Shope
Florian W.: Thank you for the clarification about version numbers. I
checked my own software update log and agree that there was, in fact, no
Chromium 35 from the Update Manager. Apparently Google's view of the
world through their narrow Windows does not give them much a realistic
panorama of the whole world.

I am now wondering if there is an easy way to revert to Chromiun 34. Or
would it be better to just abandon Chromium altogether on my older
machine? [ I do have a newer machine where Chromium 36 works OK. ]

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1353185] Re: Chromium 36 upgrade will not execute

2014-08-25 Thread Frederick L Shope
I have added an attachment with the output from cat /proc/cpuinfo.

I have not been able to find a core dump file after running chromium-
browser from the command line. I ran sudo find -name core.* at the
root directory, but did not find anything that seemed to be associated
with Chromium. I also tried gcore chromium-browser but it declined to
generate a core file probably because chromium-browser is a script
file. I also tried gcore at /usr/lib/chromium-browser, which I think
is the Chromium executable, but it gave the same messages:

gcore chromium-browser
Illegal process-id: chromium-browser.
You can't do that without a process to debug.
The program is not being run.
gcore: failed to create core.chromium-browser

Thank you.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1353185] Re: Chromium 36 upgrade will not execute

2014-08-25 Thread opera
Looks like Chromium 35 introduced the requirement of SSE2 instructions
which aren't supported on our older Athlon CPUs.

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=750361
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=348761

Arch Linux even has extra packages without an sse2 dependency.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1353185] Re: Chromium 36 upgrade will not execute

2014-08-25 Thread Frederick L Shope
Based on the comments of Opera above, I would say my problem with
Chromium 36 is not properly a bug, but a problem of obsolete hardware.
My machine where Chromium won't run is a 2003 machine with an AMD
Athlon(TM) XP 2400+.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1353185] Re: Chromium 36 upgrade will not execute

2014-08-25 Thread Frederick L Shope
I guess I should emphasize that Chromium 35 seemed to be running more or
less OK on my AMD Athlon(TM) XP 2400+ machine, although Adobe Flash
Player will not run with any of the browsers installed there (Firefox,
Opera, or Chromium).
