Simon P., I've been battling with parts of this same issue for a while since I bought a laptop with a clickpad. The root cause is the default settings for the Synaptics driver when using any clickpad are distinctly user unfriendly for a default install. Hence, it may require some additional work to check for a clickpad (if possible) and then adjust accordingly. This suggested terminal commands won't fix everything if applied upstream, but would go a long way in addressing many of these issues. Despite this, the issue you are reporting is an upstream one.
