  After installing a fresh Ubuntu 17.10 I can't display videos with totem any 
more.
  If I double-click on an mpeg file the window is opened, sound starts but 
window stays black.

If a fix for bug 1720820 arrives and this bug is not resolved then we

   Totem with gstreamer1.0-vaapi and Wayland is just a black screen, then

Thanks. Please try this as a workaround for totem:

  sudo apt remove gstreamer1.0-vaapi

or this as a workaround for all players:

  sudo apt remove mesa-va-drivers
