Public bug reported: I am running 17.10, and once in a while, for no apparent reason, I am getting high CPU usage from gnome-shell. So much so that the system becomes unusable and the only solution is to restart.
I'm using two monitors if that makes a difference, the laptop is on a dock , one external monitor is in landscape mode, and the other one is in portrait mode. Not sure what else to provide, I have run the `ubuntu-bug gnome-shell` command so hopefully there will be debug info attached. I'm going to reboot now because the laptop is very noisy and slow. ``` $ sudo apt-cache policy gnome-shell gnome-shell: Installed: 3.26.2-0ubuntu0.1 Candidate: 3.26.2-0ubuntu0.1 Version table: *** 3.26.2-0ubuntu0.1 500 500 http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu artful-updates/main amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 3.26.1-0ubuntu4 500 500 http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu artful/main amd64 Packages ``` ``` $ lsb_release -rd Description: Ubuntu 17.10 Release: 17.10 ``` ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 17.10 Package: gnome-shell 3.26.2-0ubuntu0.1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 4.13.0-36.40-generic 4.13.13 Uname: Linux 4.13.0-36-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.20.7-0ubuntu3.7 Architecture: amd64 CurrentDesktop: ubuntu:GNOME Date: Fri Mar 2 18:23:00 2018 DisplayManager: gdm3 InstallationDate: Installed on 2017-05-15 (291 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 17.04 "Zesty Zapus" - Release amd64 (20170412) SourcePackage: gnome-shell UpgradeStatus: Upgraded to artful on 2017-10-27 (126 days ago) ** Affects: gnome-shell (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug artful wayland-session -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-shell in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1753020 Title: High CPU usage in gnome-shell, occurs randomly Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: I am running 17.10, and once in a while, for no apparent reason, I am getting high CPU usage from gnome-shell.
