Bug description:
  Okay the has happened recently at least since march 18, 2019 iso and
  march 22, 2019 iso are both effected very similar to one of my
  previously reported bugs .. which was related to xorg not being
  installed ..

  
  back ground .. PC is lenovo sl 500 with evo860 SSD drive

  3 partions contain installs of disco sda1 -- main working system -- I
  usually install grub from here as master ..

  sda6 and sda7 are test installs of disco daily iso's 03-18-2019,
  03-22-2019 repectively

  
  on the test installs as long as the iso is using the grub boot loader 
installed from that install the system will boot normally .. the display manger 
tends to flicker on and off but does final start and login can proceed. 

  but if another install re-installs grub as master  the display manager
  fails to stay active or even come-up  for sda6 or sda7 only if their
  own grubs are reinstalled will they work normally

  sda1 display manager/xorg login works always no matter which "grub-
  source" is in control.

  if I use rescue boot from any grub as master I can get the displays to work 
by running dpkg fix which does nothing .. and then resuming the boot .. then 
things work normally..
  if the "non-rescue" boots are used the screen/computer locks and only a power 
down and reboot gives access. (sometime requiring radical depowering .. 
unpluging and removing battery)

  now the is a message that appears that RCs??? level is missing.

okay I have another solution to the timing issue .. add two partition
mounts to fstab ..

my existing sda1 disco install has /home (sda2) and /home/store1 (sda5)
mounted via fstab .. this was the original install configuration .. thus
always a mount delay ..

to test .. added the same partions to mount on /home/oldhome and /home/store1
respectively on newly installed sda9 - disco xubuntu final and no crashes ..
..plymouth shows up .. xorg/lightdm start normally ..just enough delay to let
everything else happen .. all using the "foreign sda1 installed grub" ..

so all the errors are due to "faster than expected storage media
response time" .. some slumbering boot timing issues waiting to cause
trouble ..

Okay the has happened recently at least since march 18, 2019 iso and
march 22, 2019 iso are both effected very similar to one of my
previously reported bugs .. which was related to xorg not being
installed ..

back ground .. PC is lenovo sl 500 with evo860 SSD drive

3 partions contain installs of disco sda1 -- main working system -- I
usually install grub from here as master ..

sda6 and sda7 are test installs of disco daily iso's 03-18-2019,
03-22-2019 repectively

on the test installs as long as the iso is using the grub boot loader
installed from that install the system will boot normally .. the display manger
tends to flicker on and off but does final start and login can proceed.

but if another install re-installs grub as master the display manager
fails to stay active or even come-up for sda6 or sda7 only if their
own grubs are reinstalled will they work normally

sda1 display manager/xorg login works always no matter which "grub-
source" is in control.

if I use rescue boot from any grub as master I can get the displays to work
by running dpkg fix which does nothing .. and then resuming the boot .. then
things work normally..
if the "non-rescue" boots are used the screen/computer locks and only a power
down and reboot gives access. (sometime requiring radical depowering ..
unpluging and removing battery)

now the is a message that appears that RCs??? level is missing.

of course the sda1 partition (on the SSD) has never failed to work properly no 
matter which grub source (installs on sda1,sda6,sda7,sda8,sda9) is used 
plymouth always appears when sda1 boots.. 
this disco version was installed jan 10 with a bootstrap log date of oct 13, 
2018 .. it has been updated regularly ever since .. daily from proposed .. 
without issues ..

other partition  installs through most of febuary tested about once per
week not always reported .. appeared to have no issues ..

so the question to be answered is what change in late february /early march 
could have influenced 
 the timing of the boot sequence and the start of plymouth ? any ideas?

okay turned back the clock .. to a spinning metal disk previously
installed in this hardware .. ran a number of test installs all work
fine .. cosmic/bionic/disco early version disco final all work boot
normally .. always ..

thus conclusion is a SSD is very fast and can respond to requests sooner than a
spinning metal disk this throws off the timing of a number of boot processes
.. which become out of sync.. due to the " slower processor " now the first
boot into a fresh install is not effected as a very extended plymouth start
occurs .. due to " automatic-updates?? or disk checks or something ?"
the rest of the boots are too fast for even plymouth to load properly due to a
not yet loaded kernel video module .. thus it only flashes the screen red
briefly .. then xorg/lightdm crashes for the same reason(?).. delayed kernel
module load .. then a second successful try if still booting from "native" grub
..else no retry and lock-up

video of sda9 boot using sda9 install of grub (native grub) .. note absence of 
plymouth .. flash at top edge of screen was missed .. note brief appearance of 
lightdm  .. short gap then lightdm reappears .. xorg.0.log.old records the 
crash .. similar to others above 
xorg.0.log records successful xorg/lightdm start ..

Bug description:
  Okay the has happened recently at least since march 18, 2019 iso and
  march 22, 2019 iso are both effected very similar to one of my
  previously reported bugs .. which was related to xorg not being
  installed ..

  
  back ground .. PC is lenovo sl 500 with evo860 SSD drive

  3 partions contain installs of disco sda1 -- main working system -- I
  usually install grub from here as master ..

  sda6 and sda7 are test installs of disco daily iso's 03-18-2019,
  03-22-2019 repectively

  
  on the test installs as long as the iso is using the grub boot loader 
installed from that install the system will boot normally .. the display manger 
tends to flicker on and off but does final start and login can proceed. 

  but if another install re-installs grub as master  the display manager
  fails to stay active or even come-up  for sda6 or sda7 only if their
  own grubs are reinstalled will they work normally

  sda1 display manager/xorg login works always no matter which "grub-
  source" is in control.

  if I use rescue boot from any grub as master I can get the displays to work 
by running dpkg fix which does nothing .. and then resuming the boot .. then 
things work normally..
  if the "non-rescue" boots are used the screen/computer locks and only a power 
down and reboot gives access. (sometime requiring radical depowering .. 
unpluging and removing battery)

  now the is a message that appears that RCs??? level is missing.

I will try to do videos for you tomorrow it is getting late in the day
here ..

a brief synopsis for now ..

history: this is standard grub arrangement as "installed by default"
used to work flawlessly with multiple partitions of various linux OS's
.. It is only since early march that I noticed an issue with newer
install disco boots failing ..

I have an older disco install on sda1 which has been working all this
time through without issues .. upgraded daily .. no alteration of
netplan config or i915 module forcing..

I can prevent failures in two different ways .. add the module to
/etc/modules or change netplan config to not use NetworkManager as the
default.. attached

my suspicion is that NetworkManager is crashing the system by running
too early as on part of the failure..

the second part is slow loading of the necessary kernal module i915

this may be also the reason the plymouth (busy screen) does not show in
the boot phase of the effected partitions which are all recent disco
xubuntu spins..

an ubuntu install showed no issues .. wayland only works!

When using the freshly installed grub with the partition it belongs to
we get the first boot normal every thing works .. but on restarting
again (2nd boot) xorg/lightdm initially crash then in about 6 seconds
xorg/lightdm restarts ..and works

on any other disco-xubuntu partition (except sda1) booting from this
fresh grub .. we get the initial crash of xorg/lightdm and a locked
system .. no restart of xorg/lightdm at all .. no console either .. only
the power switch/ power removal works to reset ..

and thus " a very perturbed and frustrated tester "

Okay, this bug has absolutely nothing to do with grub or netplan.
Changing the renderer couldn't possibly affect the behavior of X, and
the grub configuration looks, at a glace, to be run-of-the mill; pretty
much default if you disregard that there is any number of different
installs on the system.

For instance the kernel command-line:

(from various attached output of dmesg)
This command-line is pretty much default. The use of kernels 5.0.0-7 or 5.0.0-8 
are what I'd expect on disco images; and there are no special kernel parameters 
being passed. I don't know what partition root= points to; but this is the only 
possible thing I could see. Grub really doesn't care what you want to start, it 
will just run the kernel and initrd you tell it to. Unless this is a quite 
unforeseen and unlikely bad interaction between kernel drivers and the limited 
gfxmode changes we do in grub... but we'd see this on more than just this 
system.

Could you please attach a video or pictures of what you're seeing on the
screen, along with clear details of *any* modifications you do to boot
something, how you set up your tests, so that we could potentially
reproduce this or see what is happening?

I'm cleaning up the title here for clarity; but this seems like either a
kernel bug, some missing modules for your particular setup, or bad
interactions because of the very complicated multi-boot scenario you're
presenting.

okay a previous "fresh install that was crashing plymouth
screen/lightdm/xorg was fixed by copying a known working set of netplan
conf files into  /etc/netplan ..

the 01-netcfg.yaml from the "network install" uses networkd as the
renderer .. with a working network device config.. plus the  01-network-
manager-all.yaml file as well

proof enough?  of some weird interactions between services

now the minimal 01-network-manager-all.yaml on the new installs seems to be 
lacking something ..
although the documentation says it should work .. which it does if your 
graphics start properly .. Wayland (ubuntu install) or amd/ati cards probably 
nvidia too I have not tested

 but if using the current default netplan  and i915 as module NOT listed
in /etc/modules  .. it does not work it crashes and locks up and only a
powerswitch shutdown works .. no reset button on laptop .. no console
access is available either .. so it has taken a bit of time to determine
all this ..

Anybody know how to fix the netplan config in a "generic way" to cure
this issue?



 the only problem is no control over switching  networks .. NetworkManager does 
not seem to have control over the interface started by networkd ..

okay I stumbled across something .. the network install .. used netplan
to set-up my wifi connection to start on boot .. so as soon as systemd
networkd starts wifi is started  NetworkManager thus has no access or
anyway to try for other networks.. so I tried to change this.. If I edit
the config files to give exclusive control to NetworkManager ..run
netplan apply as long as I don't reboot I can use NetworkManager as per
normal

As soon as I try to reboot back into the install (via and foreign grub
as defined above) I get exactly the same crash pattern as before .. so
the deduction is that

netplan configuration problems are causing the plymouth/xorg issues when
you use only NetworkManager as a renderer .. so I am altering the title
here again

  Okay the has happened recently at least since march 18, 2019 iso and
  march 22, 2019 iso are both effected very similar to one of my
  previously reported bugs .. which was related to xorg not being
  installed ..

  
  back ground .. PC is lenovo sl 500 with evo860 SSD drive

  3 partions contain installs of disco sda1 -- main working system -- I
  usually install grub from here as master ..

  sda6 and sda7 are test installs of disco daily iso's 03-18-2019,
  03-22-2019 repectively

  
  on the test installs as long as the iso is using the grub boot loader 
installed from that install the system will boot normally .. the display manger 
tends to flicker on and off but does final start and login can proceed. 

  but if another install re-installs grub as master  the display manager
  fails to stay active or even come-up  for sda6 or sda7 only if their
  own grubs are reinstalled will they work normally

  sda1 display manager/xorg login works always no matter which "grub-
  source" is in control.

  if I use rescue boot from any grub as master I can get the displays to work 
by running dpkg fix which does nothing .. and then resuming the boot .. then 
things work normally..
  if the "non-rescue" boots are used the screen/computer locks and only a power 
down and reboot gives access. (sometime requiring radical depowering .. 
unpluging and removing battery)

  now the is a message that appears that RCs??? level is missing.

An additional data point  for reference .. did a netboot install of
xubuntu  using "daily" amd64 netboot mini.iso ..  base install followed
by taskselect install of xubuntu ..

boots normally plymouth and lightdm screens appear as expected .. also
switching to foreign grub .. it still boots normally .. normal expected
behaviour ..

note: regular ubuntu daily also behaves this way .. but uses wayland no
xorg ..

rhetorical question: so what makes the full graphics install so fragile
for intel i915 graphics?

okay apr 8 and apr 9 iso's have same issues kept logs of various boots
into the fresh installs .. no change in grub-source during testing was
made .. all with fresh installs

typical first boot is normal ..  no crash of xorg on first start ..
second boot shows lightdm briefly then xorg crashes while trying to use FBDEV 
last item before crash loads libfb.so then backtrace happens and crash ..

.. then xorg restarts with a working driver

testing xubuntu-disco-daily.iso apr 06, 2019 First boot fine plymouth,
and xorg/lightdm started normally.. did a number of updates and
rebooted.

second boot plymouth not seen, xorg/lightdm appeared briefly .. then
vanished .. then reappears ..

checked xorg.0.log(s) ..
xorg.0.log .. seemed ok ..
xorg.0.log .. shows crash at the end .. time stamps are very close ..
generated in the same minute .. root reveals a core file .. quick look with mc
shows xorg/lightgm crash record.. this filwe is attached below ..

There was no change of grub up to this point .. this was a fresh install
only the second boot ..

3 partions contain installs of disco sda1 -- main working system -- I
usually install grub from here as master ..

sda6 and sda7 are test installs of disco daily iso's 03-18-2019,
03-22-2019 repectively

but if another install re-installs grub as master the display manager
fails to stay active or even come-up for sda6 or sda7 only if their
own grubs are reinstalled will they work normally

sda1 display manager/xorg login works always no matter which "grub-
source" is in control.

now the is a message that appears that RCs??? level is missing.

just some summary thoughts in addition to point to some anomalies ..

the "failures in lightdm appear to correspond with shorter journal logs .. 
so certain processes are not running as expected .. 

plymouth also does not appear on the screen .. 
as it needs the proper graphics support ..

  Okay the has happened recently at least since march 18, 2019 iso and
  march 22, 2019 iso are both effected very similar to one of my
  previously reported bugs .. which was related to xorg not being
  installed ..

  
  back ground .. PC is lenovo sl 500 with evo860 SSD drive

  3 partions contain installs of disco sda1 -- main working system -- I
  usually install grub from here as master ..

  sda6 and sda7 are test installs of disco daily iso's 03-18-2019,
  03-22-2019 repectively

  
  on the test installs as long as the iso is using the grub boot loader 
installed from that install the system will boot normally .. the display manger 
tends to flicker on and off but does final start and login can proceed. 

  but if another install re-installs grub as master  the display manager
  fails to stay active or even come-up  for sda6 or sda7 only if their
  own grubs are reinstalled will they work normally

  sda1 display manager/xorg login works always no matter which "grub-

I've been merrily switching between OS's without this kind of issue for more 
than 10 years .. 
the behaviour changed recently in the last 30 days .. 
it was fine prior to that .. 
This is a regression bug and will annoy anyone working with multiple instances 
of disco xubuntu for testing..

yes it is particular to intel graphics.. i915 based

I have another older laptop amd/ati based which does not react this was
way

no it is not a show stopper except when the power button refuses to
work..

I'm trying to figure it out .. thus the questions.. sorry if that is
inappropriate.

Your setup is anything but a typical one, and bugs should not be used to
"ask" how something works the way it does. You mentioned that the
"original" disco install always works fine, so I don't think there's a
valid bug here at all?

okay generated the default grub.cfg via sda6 grub-install boot instance
.. vt.handle=1 is set by default for self root boot about a minute to
boot

no change .. still no plymouth on boot but there is a flicker with
lightdm .. which restarts once video mode switch has happened ..

note all grub installs use the same command line: sudo grub-install /dev/sda
only the source partition varies ..

again .. any more ideas why the newer iso's fail?

I've skipped posting the boot between for sudo update-grub .. but I did save
the log .. it has all the update-grub action recorded .. any use? I can post it.

back ground .. PC is lenovo sl 500 with evo860 SSD drive

3 partions contain installs of disco sda1 -- main working system -- I
usually install grub from here as master ..

sda6 and sda7 are test installs of disco daily iso's 03-18-2019,
03-22-2019 repectively

but if another install re-installs grub as master the display manager
fails to stay active or even come-up for sda6 or sda7 only if their
own grubs are reinstalled will they work normally

sda1 display manager/xorg login works always no matter which "grub-
source" is in control.

now the is a message that appears that RCs??? level is missing.

here is the journalctl boot log for sda6 /zlink4 booted by it's own
install of grub (self grub)

(it was reinstalled for this purpose  .. to show it works .. however
plymouth does not show on the screen at all on boot but does on shutdown
)

now one change is addition of a vt.handoff=1 to the end of the grub entry 
(originally a $vt_handoff)   i'll shortly revert this and regenerate this log 
again.. 

size is about same as zlink1 version also about 1 minute long

note every problem boot has a much shorter journalctl boot log..why?

some stuff is not getting done .. only because the source of the grub-
install has changed and the controlling partition grub.cfg used instead
..   ??

these are generic auto-generated by update-grub .. so why the different
behaviours

  Okay the has happened recently at least since march 18, 2019 iso and
  march 22, 2019 iso are both effected very similar to one of my
  previously reported bugs .. which was related to xorg not being
  installed ..

  
  back ground .. PC is lenovo sl 500 with evo860 SSD drive

here we have a normal journalctl boot log .. notice the size .. more
entries .. about 1 minute start to finish source the partition that
always works lightdm starts normally plymouth appears on screen etc.

this one was booted by grub installed by zlink4 - on sda6 ..

so why the peculiar behaviour that lightdm works when the partition
installed native grub boots the system

BUT not when a grub installed by another partition is used then lightdm
consistently crashes and the machine locks up..

BUT if i915 is added to /etc/modules in the offending partition it all
seems to work properly .. except plymouth does not show up..

if grub is restored by the offending partition via booting via rescue or
working through a chroot  WITHOUT i915 added to /etc/modules i.e. as
installed originally .. the system seems to work but some times only
vesa is used after an initial lightdm crash ..

Then there is partition sda1 which consistently works from any grub
installed by other partitions and NEVER had i915 added to /etc/modules
..

please explain...what might cause this

i915 is loaded just fine on your first journal log:

but it's happening after lightdm is started, so I'd say it's lightdm
which is just being too hasty

Bug description:
  Okay the has happened recently at least since march 18, 2019 iso and
  march 22, 2019 iso are both effected very similar to one of my
  previously reported bugs .. which was related to xorg not being
  installed ..

  
  back ground .. PC is lenovo sl 500 with evo860 SSD drive

  3 partions contain installs of disco sda1 -- main working system -- I
  usually install grub from here as master ..

  sda6 and sda7 are test installs of disco daily iso's 03-18-2019,
  03-22-2019 repectively

  
  on the test installs as long as the iso is using the grub boot loader 
installed from that install the system will boot normally .. the display manger 
tends to flicker on and off but does final start and login can proceed. 

  but if another install re-installs grub as master  the display manager
  fails to stay active or even come-up  for sda6 or sda7 only if their
  own grubs are reinstalled will they work normally

  sda1 display manager/xorg login works always no matter which "grub-
  source" is in control.

  if I use rescue boot from any grub as master I can get the displays to work 
by running dpkg fix which does nothing .. and then resuming the boot .. then 
things work normally..
  if the "non-rescue" boots are used the screen/computer locks and only a power 
down and reboot gives access. (sometime requiring radical depowering .. 
unpluging and removing battery)

  now the is a message that appears that RCs??? level is missing.

a little digging and plymouth is supposed to work with drm modesetting
drivers which means i915 has to be loaded for it to work .. so not
seeing it means ..some hardware detection has failed .. is that part of
plymouth or something else?

since it works on the upgraded install on sda1 I suspect a config file
change relating to hardware detection and "autoload" by systemd .. i'm
not familiar with that magic .. I only know that manual override via
/etc/modules etc. is possible.. not required on sda1

I noticed that issues with xorg function started arround march 16, 2019 ..
first bug report ..missing xorg-server install .. #1820430 .. march 8, 2019 iso
was okay as far as i can remember ..
unfortunately .. those dailys are bit vapor so no way to re test .. unless i
can re-download .. is there an archive? I haven't looked.

Kernel module will load if added to /etc/ modules .. I have my sda1
partition running kernel 5.0.0-8.9  as are the iso's tested recently .. my
sda1 partition  loads i915 without using /etc/modules.. I notice that the
recent isos do not show Plymouth progress screen at startup..is that
relevant?

kernel version it started in. Please try some different kernel versions:

  https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D

and see if you can find the two closest versions where one doesn't have
the bug and the other does.

now this begs the question why does kernel module i915 not auto load anymore? 
i.e. the newer iso's since mid-march ..??? what got yanked out that would cause 
this ??

  lightdm login screen briefly appears and then blanks out on Intel(R)

Bug description:
  Okay the has happened recently at least since march 18, 2019 iso and
  march 22, 2019 iso are both effected very similar to one of my
  previously reported bugs .. which was related to xorg not being
  installed ..

  
  back ground .. PC is lenovo sl 500 with evo860 SSD drive

  3 partions contain installs of disco sda1 -- main working system -- I
  usually install grub from here as master ..

  sda6 and sda7 are test installs of disco daily iso's 03-18-2019,
  03-22-2019 repectively

  
  on the test installs as long as the iso is using the grub boot loader 
installed from that install the system will boot normally .. the display manger 
tends to flicker on and off but does final start and login can proceed. 

  but if another install re-installs grub as master  the display manager
  fails to stay active or even come-up  for sda6 or sda7 only if their
  own grubs are reinstalled will they work normally

  sda1 display manager/xorg login works always no matter which "grub-
  source" is in control.

  if I use rescue boot from any grub as master I can get the displays to work 
by running dpkg fix which does nothing .. and then resuming the boot .. then 
things work normally..
  if the "non-rescue" boots are used the screen/computer locks and only a power 
down and reboot gives access. (sometime requiring radical depowering .. 
unpluging and removing battery)

  now the is a message that appears that RCs??? level is missing.

okay .. thought about this for a bit i915 compiled as module by default
in kernel sources.. lets force it to load..

added module i915 to /etc/modules to force loading .. it is the only
entry ..

reboot into the problem install .. and  no problems .. lightdm starts and stays 
going.
 no flicker or flash off, delay, and on again at all either ..

  own grubs are reinstalled will they work normally

  if I use rescue boot from any grub as master I can get the displays to work

okay after rebooting via grub installed by sda1 .. as before .. red
flash (no plymouth) lightdm briefly displays login screen .. then
underline cursor then blank screen.

attached is zl10-boot2-xorg.0.log   xorg.0.log.old is now the already
uploaded zl10-xorg.0.log above

a crashing time is revealed in the log file ..

the " surprise log file " not expected on a first boot .. with normal
xorg startup should not exist ..

iso april 2 2019 tested .. adding xorg.0.log & xorg.0.log.old files from
first boot into fresh install .. There was a 1 to 2 second flicker in
lightdm  appearing then blanking and then reappearing on first boot  ..
have not yet rebooted into this from grub as installed by sda1 .. wanted
to save the above log files first.


files are prefixed with "zl10-"

  lightdm login screen briefly appears and then blanks out on Intel(R)

Bug description:
  Okay the has happened recently at least since march 18, 2019 iso and
  march 22, 2019 iso are both effected very similar to one of my
  previously reported bugs .. which was related to xorg not being
  installed ..

  
  back ground .. PC is lenovo sl 500 with evo860 SSD drive

  3 partions contain installs of disco sda1 -- main working system -- I
  usually install grub from here as master ..

  sda6 and sda7 are test installs of disco daily iso's 03-18-2019,
  03-22-2019 repectively

  
  on the test installs as long as the iso is using the grub boot loader 
installed from that install the system will boot normally .. the display manger 
tends to flicker on and off but does final start and login can proceed. 

  but if another install re-installs grub as master  the display manager
  fails to stay active or even come-up  for sda6 or sda7 only if their
  own grubs are reinstalled will they work normally

  sda1 display manager/xorg login works always no matter which "grub-
  source" is in control.

  if I use rescue boot from any grub as master I can get the displays to work 
by running dpkg fix which does nothing .. and then resuming the boot .. then 
things work normally..
  if the "non-rescue" boots are used the screen/computer locks and only a power 
down and reboot gives access. (sometime requiring radical depowering .. 
unpluging and removing battery)

  now the is a message that appears that RCs??? level is missing.

xubuntu iso for daily april 1, 2019 .. no change

installed iso reboots into the install partition everything works as normal..
reboot into sda1 .. grub-install /dev/sda then update-grub then reboot .. back
into the fresh install partition ..

same behaviours as before .. red flash no visible plymouth .. brief
lightdm login screen appearance .. then brief cursor .. then blank
screen .. all after changing grub back to sda1 as master after
installing iso to freshly blanked test partition sda7 or sda6

oh one thing I noticed and did not mention .. the plymouth screen fails
to appear (just a redish flash at top of screen) when booting from a
non-native grub for the recent daily xubuntu iso's  if the native grub
is used plymouth screen appears..

for sda1 boot from any grub a plymouth screen appears although non-
native boots show a progress bar instead of a swirling circle .. native
boot is black version .. non-native is bluish

also attached is xorg.0.log from beta showing xorg ..crash

Bug description:
  Okay the has happened recently at least since march 18, 2019 iso and
  march 22, 2019 iso are both effected very similar to one of my
  previously reported bugs .. which was related to xorg not being
  installed ..

  
  back ground .. PC is lenovo sl 500 with evo860 SSD drive

  3 partions contain installs of disco sda1 -- main working system -- I
  usually install grub from here as master ..

  sda6 and sda7 are test installs of disco daily iso's 03-18-2019,
  03-22-2019 repectively

  
  on the test installs as long as the iso is using the grub boot loader 
installed from that install the system will boot normally .. the display manger 
tends to flicker on and off but does final start and login can proceed. 

  but if another install re-installs grub as master  the display manager
  fails to stay active or even come-up  for sda6 or sda7 only if their
  own grubs are reinstalled will they work normally

  sda1 display manager/xorg login works always no matter which "grub-
  source" is in control.

  if I use rescue boot from any grub as master I can get the displays to work 
by running dpkg fix which does nothing .. and then resuming the boot .. then 
things work normally..
  if the "non-rescue" boots are used the screen/computer locks and only a power 
down and reboot gives access. (sometime requiring radical depowering .. 
unpluging and removing battery)

  now the is a message that appears that RCs??? level is missing.

stranger and stranger .. if you install kernel 5.0.0-8.9 at the first
boot into any new install partition before changing any thing else .. it
does not fix the issue .. once you return sda1 to being grub master ..
neither sda7 nor sda6 will keep lightdm running ..both briefly flash
lightdm login screen and then blank out screen , briefly showing a
cursor .. a long hold down of power button does eventually powerdown
machine .. note: can't even get to consoles .. not a nice fail.

note resetting grub back to the "new install version" works but there
is a stutter in lightdm .. it shows briefly blanks for 2 seconds then
shows again and and you can login..

only other way into partition is through recovery boot option, or via a
chroot.

this is now using xubuntu-am64-desktop.iso -beta version ( two installs
sda6 and sda7 )

I'm beginning to think that using a chroot to reinstall/or update the
kernel might be a "work around only" for the issue .. as a native update
does not work ..

I'm going to test this further .. replace sda6 and sda7 sequentially and
see what happens using chroots for updates more later .. any ideas
what else to look for or check?

okay still bug present in xubuntu-disco-amd64-desktop-beta.. still uses
kernel 5.0.0-7

updating from proposed with  kernel 5.0.0-8.9  it works properly

i.e. any linux os partion can be used to install grub and another partion with 
linux can be 
selected and boot normally 

e.g. beta install is on sda7 another linux os version is on sda1 which is used 
to install grub to /dev/sda  thus sda1 is master/main linix os used .. the beta 
on sda7 will start lightdm but it flickers on and dies when using kernel 
5.0.0-7 
but when using kernel 5.0.0-8.9 it works properly lightdm stays running and 
does  not even flicker...  the only apparent difference is the kernel selected 
..

addional clarification .. if sda6 (recovery booted or chrooted)
installed grub then sda6 boots with some brief flashing normally. if
sda7 or sda1 (recovery booted or chrooted or a normal boot for sda1)
installed grub then sda6 would boot and lighjtdm would briefly flash
onto screen and the disappear (blank screen) showing just aflashing
underline cursor.

so xorg video drivers appear  NOT to be involved. except maybe as kernel
i915 modules missing I have not checked

Bug description:
  Okay the has happened recently at least since march 18, 2019 iso and
  march 22, 2019 iso are both effected very similar to one of my
  previously reported bugs .. which was related to xorg not being
  installed ..

  
  back ground .. PC is lenovo sl 500 with evo860 SSD drive

  3 partions contain installs of disco sda1 -- main working system -- I
  usually install grub from here as master ..

  sda6 and sda7 are test installs of disco daily iso's 03-18-2019,
  03-22-2019 repectively

  
  on the test installs as long as the iso is using the grub boot loader 
installed from that install the system will boot normally .. the display manger 
tends to flicker on and off but does final start and login can proceed. 

  but if another install re-installs grub as master  the display manager
  fails to stay active or even come-up  for sda6 or sda7 only if their
  own grubs are reinstalled will they work normally

  sda1 display manager/xorg login works always no matter which "grub-
  source" is in control.

  if I use rescue boot from any grub as master I can get the displays to work 
by running dpkg fix which does nothing .. and then resuming the boot .. then 
things work normally..
  if the "non-rescue" boots are used the screen/computer locks and only a power 
down and reboot gives access. (sometime requiring radical depowering .. 
unpluging and removing battery)

  now the is a message that appears that RCs??? level is missing.

this effected only the more recent installs

you have miss understood the details in the initial report .. the system
would boot normally as long as the grub used (installed) was from the
install partition (sda6 or sda7) .. if another partition was used to
install grub the lightdm would appear briefly and then crash or vanish
to a underline flashing cursor

the video system did work it would flash once on start-up but come back
in about 5 seconds or less is the correct (ie this partition installed
the grub version used)

the main sda1 partition always worked .. only difference was the kernel image 
used .. 
I have not yet checked to see if the sda1 5.0.0.7 image fails currently but it 
worked fine before.

the installation of the newer video drivers did not fix this issue!!! It
remained as long as a 5.0.0.7 kernel was selected to boot sda6 or sda7

sda1 was not effected.
