[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1874874] Re: Focal detects wrong driver version 440 for NVIDIA GTX 550

2020-07-05 Thread Pablo Carballo
nvidia-driver-440 contains some invalid modaliases that cause to be
detected as a valid driver for the wrong card.

** Package changed: ubuntu-drivers-common (Ubuntu) => nvidia-graphics-
drivers-440 (Ubuntu)

Title:
  Focal detects wrong driver version 440 for NVIDIA GTX 550

Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers-440 package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  My desktop PC has an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti. Just installed Focal
selecting the option to install 3rd-party drivers during setup process, and
after the first boot screen resolution is 800x600.
  I verified the detected version of NVIDIA driver and I realized it was 440,
although correct version is 390. Finally I manually installed proper version
(390) and now the graphics are working OK.

  This is the output for the command "$ lspci -nn":

  01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF116 [GeForce GTX 550
Ti] (rev a1)
  01:00.1 Audio device: NVIDIA Corporation GF116 High Definition Audio
Controller (rev a1)

  This is the output for the command "# ubuntu-drivers devices":

  == /sys/devices/pci:00/:00:02.0/:01:00.0 ==
  modalias : pci:v10DEd1244sv1043sd83BEbc03sc00i00
  vendor   : NVIDIA Corporation
  model: GF116 [GeForce GTX 550 Ti]
  driver   : nvidia-driver-435 - distro non-free
  driver   : nvidia-driver-390 - distro non-free
  driver   : nvidia-driver-440 - distro non-free recommended
  driver   : nvidia-340 - distro non-free
  driver   : xserver-xorg-video-nouveau - distro free builtin

  The version 440 is recommended, but it's not correct for this model
  (390 should be recommended instead)

  The issue was not present in previous versions (in both 19.10 and 18.04
driver 390 was recommended correctly)
