Title:
external Monitor shows »No Signal« after dpms sleep

Status in xorg-server package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
My external Monitor connected via HDMI is behaving strange and my
educated guess is it is related to dpms.

Plugging in the monitor it will show »No Signal« although recognized
by `xrandr`. I would have to boot my machine with the monitor plugged
in to make it work. When going to standby (screen blanks after lock,
then screen goes to standby) the monitor is switched on (LED is going
white) and shortly after it will show the no-signal-message. `xrandr`
claims the monitor to be existent. Unplugging and replugging does not
help. Same happens when logging out to greeter. Strange in so far as
when booting up, the greeter is okay with the monitor.

When issuing `xset -dpms` the behaviour changes and the monitor will
enter sleep and come back as expected when locking the session.

Console (tty1-6) is available though at all times.

(I generated the bug report with dpms set off accidentally)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1915382] Re: external Monitor shows »No Signal« after dpms sleep

2021-09-10 Thread karlsebal
This bug has been fixed at least with firmware 1.9.1
Don’t know which one in the history did it since the machine was upgraded from
1.6.2 where the bug was still present to the recent version 1.9.1 where it is
not anymore.

Thank you!

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1915382] Re: external Monitor shows »No Signal« after dpms sleep

2021-02-21 Thread Daniel van Vugt
So long as you can still reproduce the bug when needed, I suggest the
next step is to report it to the Xorg developers at:

  https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/-/issues

and then tell us the new issue ID.

2021-02-21 Thread karlsebal
Don’t worry: I stick with “real” DP. Is this still in scope? Anyway I am
still able to connect via HDMI and check if the bug still exists.

Please don't try "DP connected via usb" because that would introduce a
new set of potential bugs that would confuse the issue here. Or if you
do start using "DP connected via usb" then we should close this bug and
open new ones.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1915382] Re: external Monitor shows »No Signal« after dpms sleep

2021-02-17 Thread karlsebal
After connecting via “real” DP-cable the situation is slightly
different.

The external monitor now is showing a picture when booting which was not
the case while connected via HDMI.

`xrandr` now shows connection via DP-2. When going to standby after
waking up monitor settings are changed to “single display”. When I
change it back to “join” the external monitor will wake up and show a
picture. So that’s an improvement at least although still funny. I
wonder how it would go with DP connected via usb.

I also conducted a firmware update but to no avail.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1915382] Re: external Monitor shows »No Signal« after dpms sleep

2021-02-11 Thread karlsebal
To make thing even weirder, one time the external monitor went to sleep while
the system was waiting for cryptfs passphrase input and the situation occured
already in login screen: Could move the mouse into the black screen with login
window following there, and back. I tried to restart lightdm. Still the same. I
logged in, restarted lightdm: tada. Monitor back awake showing my desktop.
I already tried a different cable but no success. All my other machines are
working well with that monitor hosting the same setup (ubuntu/i3).

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1915382] Re: external Monitor shows»No Signal«after dpms sleep

2021-02-11 Thread karlsebal
Thanks for your prompt answer! I narrowed things down a bit.

As I am using i3 wayland is not an option. I tried a live ubuntu 20.04 and could
still reproduce the behaviour described. I went on to enable wayland in live
session but failed eventually: XDG_SESSION_TYPE still yielded `x11` but in the
process I restarted gdm3 -- and things were fixed. Okay, I went back to the os
installed (regolith linux which is i3 based on ubuntu) and after restarting
lightdm via systemctl, things are working as expected. That's weird.

Regarding your first question: It is HDMI indeed although xrandr claiming
otherwise. There is an HDMI port beneath a DP at the rear and the rest of it is
USB.

Can I somehow convice the live system to run on wayland? The procedure described
here: https://askubuntu.com/a/1258280/595512 did not work for me.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1915382] Re: external Monitor shows »No Signal« after dpms sleep

2021-02-11 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks for the bug report. A couple of questions:

1. Xrandr.txt says nothing is connected to HDMI, but a monitor is
connected to DisplayPort. Are you using an adapter?

2. Does the same bug occur is you choose 'Ubuntu on Wayland' from the
login screen?
