[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1958038] Re: What package to report this about? Wifi driver not by default, but package is available.

2022-01-15 Thread Chris Guiver
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

Bug reporting is about finding & fixing problems thus preventing future
users from hitting the same bug.

I suspect a Support site would be more appropriate, eg.
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu. You can also find help with your
problem in the support forum of your local Ubuntu community
http://loco.ubuntu.com/ or asking at https://askubuntu.com or
https://ubuntuforums.org, or for more support options please look at
https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/community-support/709

The last planned 18.04 ISO was 18.04.5, so new installation media is/was
expected. Extra media was required because of the boothole
vulnerability (because 18.04.5 media no longer booted on fully patched
hardware) thus the re-spin of 18.04.6 for Ubuntu (flavors were already
EOL at that point so no media was created for them).

I'm not sure what your issue is, but 18.04 is a release in maintenance
mode only for packages that are still supported being Ubuntu Desktop,
Ubuntu Server, Ubuntu Cloud, and Ubuntu Base.

For this issue to be resolved, it should be addressed on the current
development release (currently jammy or what will be 22.04) as 18.04 was
developed, released and is now just maintained for security patches for
certain packages.

I'll change the status to "Incomplete" as it appears you're after a
change in ISO production but have used an inappropriate release for that
purpose. If it still occurs with current development media I'd suggest
re-filing a new bug report.

Kubuntu 18.04 is EOL (https://kubuntu.org/news/kubuntu-18-04-lts-bionic-
beaver-reaches-end-of-kubuntu-support/) & no changes to media will be
performed for 18.04 media.

** Package changed: xorg (Ubuntu) => kubuntu-meta (Ubuntu)

Bug description:
This is not rare issue, and will be more needed, since people will
stop using 32-bit windows and will want to have Ubuntu 18.04 32-bit to
work out-of-box and even before end of life comming to this in 2023
year, then it was already not a rare issue. Needs to be fixed before
EOL, so that old 32- bit people can join to fix with old computers
that wont work on windows to fix bug #1

So was trying to find out why i have errors when updating just clean
installed 32 bit 18.04.5 for thinking that i moved lan. I think moved,
but turns out also had another problem- wifi driver isnt automatically
installed even when have lan connection and need to search around.

Some people finding solution (cant find this link now) has been installing
also broadcom-sta-dkms, that made lan not work and for newbies and me a little
knowing, its hard to think to remove something that im just for testing
triaging solution finding process installing wrong one.
So need to have package installed when its been hardware detected or
mentions, that need to get new package for wifi thrue manual USB delivery and
command help or lan connection, if exists.

  Package sudo apt install firmware-b43-installer
  installs also b43-fwcutter

It should be that hardware is detected and auto selected to install.

  TL:DR

  Long story with error commands.

Before people were doing it manually, then was made that
