[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1974471] Re: mouse becomes laggy when fractional scaling is enabled
Quick follow up. I installed Ubuntu 22.04 on same RaspberryPI, and I noticed a huge performance difference with fractional scaling on Wayland. On Wayland I was unable to find any lag or delay or performance hit. On Xorg though, even Ubuntu 22.04 had the same performance issues as Ubuntu Budgie 22.04. Thanks a lot for your expertise, Daniel. Much appreciated. We will make a note on our readme for Ubuntu Budgie ARM. I hope this helps someone down the line. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to mutter in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1974471 Title: mouse becomes laggy when fractional scaling is enabled Status in mutter package in Ubuntu: Won't Fix Bug description: Distribution: Ubuntu Budgie 22.04 LTS Kernel: 5.15.0-1007-raspi Package: libmutter-10-0 Architecture: arm64 Version: 42.0-3ubuntu2 5.15.0-1007-raspi On Ubuntu Budgie 22.04 LTS raspberry PI, turning on fractional scaling causes an issue where mouse movement becomes laggy and hard to control. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1974471] Re: mouse becomes laggy when fractional scaling is enabled
Daniel, Thank you. This actually makes a lot of sense. Also, even if there is no fix, at least we will know what to tell our users if and when issues like this are reported. I am still going to test on Ubuntu on both Gnome and Wayland, and report if there is any difference, so we can keep it all for the record under same bug report.
Hmm one second delay is a bigger and different issue to bug 1902436. I've never seen anyone use Xorg fractional scaling on Raspberry Pi before but I would expect it to be super slow. Because Xorg fractional scaling effectively requires 4x the GPU power and it's only a Raspberry Pi... I would suggest just not using fractional scaling in Xorg sessions on low-power hardware. You may find GNOME Shell in a Wayland session performs much better if fractional scaling is a requirement. ** Tags added: raspi ** Changed in: mutter (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Low ** Changed in: mutter (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Confirmed ** Changed in: mutter (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Won't Fix -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to mutter in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1974471 Title: mouse becomes laggy when fractional scaling is enabled Status in mutter package in Ubuntu: Won't Fix Bug description: Distribution: Ubuntu Budgie 22.04 LTS Kernel: 5.15.0-1007-raspi Package: libmutter-10-0 Architecture: arm64 Version: 42.0-3ubuntu2 5.15.0-1007-raspi On Ubuntu Budgie 22.04 LTS raspberry PI, turning on fractional scaling causes an issue where mouse movement becomes laggy and hard to control. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1974471] Re: mouse becomes laggy when fractional scaling is enabled
Daniel, This is with Xorg fractional scaling on Ubuntu Budgie ARM64. We don't have Wayland on Budgie DE, but I can flash Ubuntu 22.04 ARM64 on a spare microSD and test. Give me a few hours and I will follow up on that. Regarding input, yes I believe same issue as described on https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1902436 . Mouse movements feel slower and also delayed around one second from the moment I move my hand to when I see the cursor moving. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to mutter in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1974471 Title: mouse becomes laggy when fractional scaling is enabled Status in mutter package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Distribution: Ubuntu Budgie 22.04 LTS Kernel: 5.15.0-1007-raspi Package: libmutter-10-0 Architecture: arm64 Version: 42.0-3ubuntu2 5.15.0-1007-raspi On Ubuntu Budgie 22.04 LTS raspberry PI, turning on fractional scaling causes an issue where mouse movement becomes laggy and hard to control.
