To repro: make sure you select the Video (not Photo) option. Then click the (now-red-inner-circled) Record button.
The white selection/area pane will remain, with the rest of the screen dimmed, until you stop the recording. How do you stop it? Look for a small control, with a white-on-red black square to the right of a counting-up timer for the video, and click that little square. So it's not so much a "bug" as a surprising, if not almost-hidden (especially for those of us with kinda-largish monitors), behavior. (This took me almost 10 minutes to figure out!!) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-screenshot in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2007194 Title: gnome-screenshot sometimes hangs leaving a transparent white square over the screen Status in gnome-screenshot package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: Based on Bug #1392053's closing comment, creating a new bug report as I am also facing this issue with gnome-screenshot. It's the same error, where there's a white outline in the centre (where the screenshot area is), and everything else on the screen is darker. Uncertain how to reproduce the error currently.
