2023-10-12 Thread Nathan Teodosio
So I followed up there and now I know the full recipe for you, with no
need to worry about backwards incompatibility:

* [Create a snapshot] snap save chromium
* [Switch to edge] snap refresh --edge chromium
* Launch Chromium normally, see if the problem is fixed
* [Switch back to stable (if desired)] snap refresh --stable chromium
* [Restore your stable data (if desired)] snap restore

You can also query your saved sets with 'snap saved'.

2023-10-12 Thread Nathan Teodosio
Andy, I released a tentative fix to the edge channel.

If you want to try it, refresh your snap with

  snap refresh --edge chromium

Please note that a transition back to stable channel might not always be
smooth (e.g. password storage can become incompatible), so you could
generate a snapshot and then restore it[1] or also use parallel
installs[2] to protect yourself against such problems.

2023-10-10 Thread Andy Jagoda
I'll take a good guess that you cannot actually notice the visual
difference between Adwaita and Adwaita-modified in Chromium — please
confirm or deny this.

That is correct. No visual difference between Adwaita and
Adwaita_modified. My modifications are only to the GTK-2.0 portion of
the theme (scrollbar slider width and some minor text/background color
changes). For GTK-3.0 related changes I use
/home/aej/.config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css which snap/chromium seems to have no
problem accessing.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2038727] Re: Chromium snap theme parsing error

2023-10-10 Thread Nathan Teodosio
OK, I managed to reproduce the issue.

> Proposition <
Chromium loads a dark theme when it finds a theme but cannot read it. Chromium
loads a light theme when it doesn't find a theme.

I'll take a good guess that you cannot actually notice the visual
difference between Adwaita and Adwaita-modified in Chromium — please
confirm or deny this.

Before, Chromium wouldn't even find Adwaita-modified and thus give you
no error message, and would load a default, light theme, that you
identify as "matching your system theme", as you can still observe by
giving GTK_THEME=random-string in the command line.

Now, due to changes in XDG_DATA_HOME, Chromium finds your Adwaita-
modified, but cannot nonetheless read it due to snap confinement, and
decides to load instead a dark theme regardless of your system settings.

As to the why there is this behavior mismatch of loading a light theme
in one case and a dark one in other, I don't know yet.

No it does not. Setting GTK_THEME=Adwaita_modified is the same as no

I don't think so, that should be a valid use case, we can surely rule
out the possibility of XFCE setting the system theme incorrectly.

I need to investigate how it does it though.

Sorry, I missed that because Launchpad collapses long answers. But
anyway, if I read correctly, Adwaita is not your theme, but
Adwaita_modified. Does it work with GTK_THEME=Adwaita_modified?

And maybe my tests were moot, because gtk-theme interface provides the
Yaru themes I tried. I will later try with a therefrom absent theme or a
custom theme.

But before we continue, please clarify this: You only notice it not only
in the stderr log but also in the user interface itself, which doesn't
use your custom theme, as it did before that release, right?

I first noticed the problem when I started the chromium snap normally using a
desktop file. It was not using my system theme like all previous versions of
the chromium snap. It was using some sort of dark theme where my system theme
is light. At that point I started the chromium snap from the terminal where I
noticed the "Permission denied" error I mention in the Bug Description.

As I stated at the end of Comment #2, the chromium snap works fine if I add
GTK_THEME=Adwaita to the Exec= line in the application's desktop file.

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 2038727] Re: Chromium snap theme parsing error

2023-10-09 Thread Nathan Teodosio
Given that this stopped working for you exactly in 117.0.5938.149, which
included some related changes (e.g. changing the default XDG_DATA_HOME),
one of them is probably affecting you here.

But before we continue, please clarify this: You only notice it not only
in the stderr log but also in the user interface itself, which doesn't
use your custom theme, as it did before that release, right?

 > $HOME/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini does not exist.

How do you set your theme?

Can you confirm that

--->
$ readlink $HOME/snap/chromium/current/.local/share/themes
/snap/chromium//data-dir/themes
<---

and that

--->
chromium file:///snap/chromium/current/data-dir/themes
<

lists a bunch of theme directories?

Do you have a reproducer recipe?

I tried with various themes I found in /usr/share/themes:

  GTK_THEME=Yaru-viridian chromium
  GTK_THEME=Yaru-blue chromium

and it seems to be working fine.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2038727] Re: Chromium snap theme parsing error

2023-10-08 Thread Andy Jagoda
The "Theme parsing error" in the Bug Description appears to be a
permission error. The theme I am using is based on Adwaita. I copied
/usr/share/themes/Adwaita to
/home/aej/.local/share/themes/Adwaita_modified and modified the gtk-2.0
portion of the theme.
/home/aej/.local/share/themes/Adwaita_modified/gtk-3.0/gtk.css contains:

/* Adwaita is now part of GTK+ 3, this file is no longer used */
@import url("resource:///org/gtk/libgtk/theme/Adwaita/gtk-contained.css");

The results from $snap connections chromium:

As I stated in the Bug Description, this theme has never been a problem
for previous versions of the Chromium snap. As a workaround to this
issue I have added GTK_THEME=Adwaita to the Exec= line in the
application's .desktop file.

2023-10-07 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
More than likely your GTK theme isn't included in the gtk-common-themes
snap, which is required for the chromium snap to be able to follow your
GTK theme.

See https://github.com/ubuntu/gtk-common-themes

Also check your snap connections, such as sudo snap connect
chromium:removable-drives
