after upgrade to karmic during audio playback a high-frequency
whistling can be heard

Binary package hint: pulseaudio
with pulseaudio configured for 5.1 sound output there is a high-frequency
whistle when playing audio files, independent from the application. when i turn
the 5.1 sound output to normal stereo output the whistle is gone.
