Given that --force-control has required an argument for over a year now,

  The man page suggests that the default for --force-control is deps
  but when I use --force-control without an argument, I get:

  $ python-mkdebian --force-control
  Usage: python_mkdebian [options]

  python_mkdebian: error: --force-control option requires an argument
