The buddy list did close however. I reselected Chat from the messaging menu and then reselected Preferences and the preferences window loaded this time. Also, I've just noticed that the theme changed in my IM window though I hadn't yet changed anything (this was an upgrade from Natty though in which I had selected a different theme, the one that now seems to be active).
