The only solution is to exit the program and start it up again. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version. I had the same problem until I turned off crossfading (Edit - Preferences, Playback tab, uncheck Crossfade between tracks). this may be some sort of sound conflict with xchat notifications (using aoss) as I noticed in lsof | grep snd that xchat was using the sound system and once it was removed and rhythmbox restarted, the sound returned. So it's some sort of blocking that's going on between the two.
