Oh, nevermind. Today's Precise update brought the appindicator support
back.

Title:
Vino VNC server should be whitelisted for legacy systray for security
  reasons

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
Vino, GNOME's default desktop sharing VNC server, doesn't display its
icon in the legacy systray. There is an option in Vino's configuration
dialog to show that icon in systray *only* when is somebody connected,
so it's kind of security issue; especially when incoming connection
confirmation is turned off. Leaving local user in belief that nobody
is connected to his/her desktop when the opposite is true is bad
  practice.

This issue can be easily fixed adding the item 'Vino' to
  com.canonical.Unity.Panel.systray-whitelist.
