i finally was able to get a GUI login screen after i logged in via ALT+F2. i installed lightdm and gdm. i set lightdm to be used (dpkg-reconfigure lightdm) i typed in sudo lightdm it didnt work. no error message - just brought me back to the original boot-text screen ALT-F2 sudo reboot now Still didnt work. ALT-F2 i set gdm to be used i typed sudo gdm Login screen works! rebooted GDM showed up! So, basically, lightdm did not work at all for me (its ok, i prefer gdm anyways) But I need to have it installed for GDM to work (which was not the case for 11.10).
