As per rich, killing remmina in the background and re-running allows it to find an rdp .so installed after remmina's first run. Here is my series of commands that solved my problem. Unfortunately, I seem to have lost the version of xfreerdp that works with RDP Gateways. Here ubuntu 13.04 amd64 #14 enlighted me. doing a dpkg -l | grep freerdp apt-get purge ... disabled remmina ppa apt-get update; apt-get install remmina resolved.
