Test case for failure

Hi folks,

Apparently apt only works in non-forked mode if tools.jar is in the system
classpath. I had to edit bin/ant in order to manually put it in the -classpath
VM option.

When I ran it without tools.jar in the system classpath, I got this:

java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com/sun/mirror/apt/AnnotationProcessorFactory

If I added tools.jar to the classpath passed to the apt task from within the
build file, I got this:

java.lang.ClassCastException: apt.extractintf.ExtractInterfaceProcessorFactory

(Which is about my test processor factory.)

Things work when running in forked mode, but large filesets (1000 classes)
cause Runtime.exec to fail. So, if you decide to always fork, I guess you'll
have to generate a temp file with the sources to be processed and pass it
through @files to apt.

I'm attaching my test case to help in diagnostics. I'm only sending 4 classes,
if you want the other 996 (which I doubt) tell me :-)

On a side note, I ran this with ant 1.6 and the apt-related classes compiled
from CVS HEAD. The ant-apt.jar is in the attachment. I tried 1.7alpha from
20050324, but it didn't work due to a wrong method name (compile instead of
process).

Since this bug (#33853) has been fixed since 2005-03-07, and the buildlog.txt
from the nightlies area says that the build failed, I presume that what's being
served as 20050324 is in fact a very older build :-(

I forgot to tell my environment: Windows 2000, jdk1.5.0_01, cygwin (running ant
or ant.bat didn't make any difference, so I don't think this is cygwin-related).

#4717969 is not much of a bug, or at least it can be easily worked around - and
it seems Ant *does* work it around it (with a shutdown hook) for normal
command-line usage. For usage in an embedded environment such as within an IDE,
the VM may not be terminated, so you need to also kill a forked child process if
the thread that ran java gets killed (ThreadDeath).

I have a simple patch which appears to fix the problem on Linux and Windows.

Note: on Linux, if the forked process uses a shutdown hook, that will still be
run, but not so on Windows. Probably a bit of platform-specific variability
outside of Ant's control.

Re: Prototype work on XML+XSL based Ant doc

The current XSL uses output=html, so no XHTML. OTOH, doesn't
JavaHelp use the HTML viewer from the JDK, which is limited to HTML
3.x? Will it support HTML 4.01 output?
Well I think it just depends on what elements and attributes you use.
AFAIK the Swing HTML renderer does an OK job on basic CSS, etc. For
purposes of something like the Ant manual it can probably render
everything we would want without problems.

(2) Adequate metadata in every file to construct a table of
contents.
What kind of TOC? Most tasks/types have the same structure,
description + attributes + elements + examples. Do we really need to
repeat these for every task/type in a TOC?
No, just a list of tasks and types. Basically equivalent a
JavaHelp-formatted replacement for coretasklist.html etc. so that you
can use a nav tree rather than HTML frames + links to move around.

Putting in a patch for 1.7: deprecating WsdlToDotnet and style. Let's have
only one recommended name for a single task.

- WsdlToDotnet uses mixed case, unlike other task names.

- style is vaguer than xslt and is also the name of an attribute on the
task, which may be confusing.
