Re: Making First Contact

2018-03-23 Thread Richard Downer
All,

I think that we - the incumbent development community - should be prepared
to be stretched and challenged by new contributions! I would love to see
something that shows that things can be done *differently* to the way we've
always done it - after all, it *might* be better :-)

Maintainability by the community as a whole is obviously a key concern, but
all these modern JS frameworks are learnable!

Richard.

[jira] [Created] (BROOKLYN-586) resolve issue of jsonpath dependency on missing library

2018-03-23 Thread Geoff Macartney (JIRA)
Geoff Macartney created BROOKLYN-586:

Summary: resolve issue of jsonpath dependency on missing library
 Key: BROOKLYN-586
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/BROOKLYN-586
 Project: Brooklyn
  Issue Type: Improvement
Reporter: Geoff Macartney

{quote}The Apache Brooklyn master build [1] has failed the last couple of times
for the Go build of brooklyn-client (see end of email for the error text). It
looks to me like our dependency github.com/NodePrime/jsonpath has been deleted!
It definitely used to be there (lots of google hits pointing at that [2]), but
404 when visiting the page.{quote}

Per [https://github.com/apache/brooklyn-client/pull/68] we can use a temporary
fork of the repo, but we should come up with a long term fix.  If NodePrime
restore the library we can use that, or we can move to another library.

2018-03-23 Thread John McCabe
Agree on the experience in the community feeding into weighing up the
framework choice - it shouldn't rule anything out, but is a very important
factor.

The pro's/con's of each are still extremely value to explore, perhaps even
have a look at vue.js while comparing.

I added a commit to the PR above to add the vendor folder and remove glide
from the build step.

Will definitely check out 'dep' soon.

Thanks John!

Re: [GSoC 2018][Brooklyn-575] New Brooklyn UI

2018-03-23 Thread Thomas Bouron
Hi Menuka.

Thanks for the draft, your comparison between Angular and React is
interesting, maybe you could develop that more?
What about the CSS framework, did you choose one? Would be great to explain
which one and why.

Also, it would be good if you could develop on your proposal rather than
copying what I written on the JIRA ticket: what is your approach? How do
you choose a framework, what are the criterias? What are you going to do
for the UI/UX, etc

Hope that helps.

Best.

I'm glad you are considering this project for GSoC 2018. I would suggest
however not to wonder around for submitting your proposal as the
 deadline
is approaching fast (28th of march) and it will be very short for us to
 give you feedback on it.

Regarding your suggestion, picking a framework is part of the proposal.
There isn't a right answer, we deliberately left that open because we
 would
like to know your arguments why you think the framework A or B is the
 most
appropriate for the job. Does it make sense?

Hope to read your proposal soon. If you have any questions, don't
 hesitate
 to ask them here.

 Best

@Geoff, I recommend vendoring dependencies while you're addressing this.
I've switched from glide to dep in recent months for this and its pretty
painless.

There may be something odd going on with that Github account, the linked
website is flagged as a security threat by Cisco Umbrella on the corp

2018-03-23 Thread Geoff Macartney
Let's give them a bit of time to reply, hopefully it is just a mistake, as
you say. I had a look and while there are other JSONPath golang libs out
there, this seems to be the one most highly recommended, so it would be a
bit of a shame to lose it.

Re: Failing Go build: NodePrime/jsonpath missing?

2018-03-23 Thread Thomas Bouron
Geoff, I asked them if it was intentional for the lib to go dark and if so,
if they know a suitable replacement for it.
I hope it's just a mistake from them, like making the repo private so
hopefully, it will fix itself soon.

But if you want to take a look by replacing the lib, go for it, you know
the CLI better than anyone ;)

Best.

I sent an email to the one listed on their GitHub page[1].
I'll report back once I get a response.

Best.
