Subject: Accelerite's acquisition of CloudPlatform - the Accelerite viewpoint

Hello,

This is a wide distribution. I hesitate to spam, but I do want to introduce
Accelerite to the Apache CloudStack community - who we are, how we do things,
and what is our thinking on CloudStack. If you missed the announcement about
Accelerite acquiring CloudPlatform from Citrix, you can find it
here.

My name is Samir Agarwal, and I manage products at Accelerite. Our company
strives to be a preferred, premier provider of IT solutions to companies around
the globe. The company has three key business lines - Mobility and endpoint
management, IoT, and Cloud Solutions. This last business line is where our
acquisition of CloudPlatform fits, and complements our already existing
self-service and disaster recovery & business continuity solutions.

In addition to building products from scratch, Accelerite regularly acquires
assets from other companies - much like CloudPlatform from Citrix. Almost
always the first thing we do is bring a strong focus on support to make sure
our customers' needs are being met. In parallel we look to significantly
increase our investments in R We want to make sure our existing and future
customers see our commitment to the product, and an exciting roadmap to go with
it. This is exactly what we are planning to do with CloudPlatform as well.

So, what does all of this mean for CloudStack? I can tell you that our
commitment to CloudStack is rock solid. You should fully expect to see us
contributing to the CloudStack code base, and owning even more items on the
roadmap. We will be in meetups and CloudStack events to further promote the
cause of CloudStack and CloudPlatform. To say we are thrilled about the
possibilities doesn't do justice to our level of excitement. My colleague,
Lianghwa Jou, and I met Ilya H, John K and Animesh C - all members of the
CloudStack PMC - the other day over lunch. We learned a great deal from them,
and left with a resolve to further engage with the community, and explore how
we can make meaningful contributions. We are firmly of the belief that the
success of CloudPlatform lies in the success of CloudStack. Put more plainly,
without CloudStack, there is no CloudPlatform!

We look forward to an exciting relationship with the CloudStack community.

Samir

Quick note about $dayjob

2016-01-26 Thread Sebastien Goasguen
Hi folks,

As some of you might have guessed I am changing $dayjob.

This is an exciting time for me, but it also means that I will become less
involved with CloudStack. ( I said *less* involved, did not say I was going to
disappear). I have informed the PMC and offered to stop my VP role ahead of the
March deadline. As you know we have a one-year rotation for the VP role.
However if the PMC does not see a problem with it I will gladly continue until
March.

I will keep this brief but I wanted to let you know so that you don’t wonder
why my involvement in recent releases and votes has decreased.

It is an exciting time for CloudStack as well, with ever greater releases ( in
large part to Remi, Wilder and a few others), a strong proposal to offer LTS
and the commitment from Accelerite.

Change is good, challenges are opportunities says Sensei Wu from Ninjago :)

PS:
If you wonder, I am launching my own container startup called Skippbox. I will
grant myself a shameless plug, and if you know anyone interested in containers
and kubernetes I sure could use some help ( https://github.com/skippbox ,
http://www.skippbox.com/blog/), github stars and PRs :)

Cheers,

-Sebastien

Hi @rafaelweingartner,

Thanks for your review! I agree with @serg38, it was thought just to extend
the functionality by adding an entry on image_store_details table
with nfs version, but if the entry was not added we wanted it to continue
working as it was.

Ok, I understood that you want to maintain compatibility.
What I do not understand is that: If there is a problem with some NFS (they
do not support version discovery), why aren’t you always using the
“mountService.getMountPoint” passing the NFS version? Most of the times you
just send a null, only at the SSVM code you are using the version; wouldn’t
this cause problems in some other piece of the code base such as the one you
found out?
You already have the method “getNfsVersion” that will return a null if
the version is not configured; I do not see a good reason not to use it; this
way we would have a more concise code.

Additionally, you have duplicated the code of “getNfsVersion” in two or
three places, I believe we should avoid those duplicated code.

I would also add a Java doc to the “getNfsVersion”, stating what it
does, what parameters it looks for, what happens if it does not find the
parameter and where (in the DB) those parameters are stored.

Cheers,

-Sebastien

Happy to host in Montreal. We should have enough space at our offices, and
I have some other locations we could use if we are more than 100.

Yeah, I'd love to pursue the idea of having a CloudStack conf in Montreal
if we feel there's enough interest.

Ian - Aside from e-mails to dev, users, etc. (which is definitely good to
do), any thoughts on how we might go about finding the answer to that
question?

Re: [DISCUSSION] Collab for Spring 2016

2016-01-26 Thread Ian Rae
I think we would put together a summary of what we are going to do, pick
the dates, and send out a signup form.

If we take a lean approach it should not be expensive to run. I will get
this on my marketing team’s list of things to do in the next week or two.

FYI: master branch is on 4.9.0 now

2016-01-26 Thread Remi Bergsma
Hi all,

Following the release of ACS 4.8.0, master is now on version 4.9.0. I tested
several upgrades and that works fine.

If you have a bug fix, please point your pull request to the 4.7 branch and it
will be merged to 4.8 and master as well after initial merge.

New features will land in master, so please open a PR against that branch.

Regards,
Remi

[GitHub] cloudstack pull request: Support jdk8 mvnupgrades

2016-01-26 Thread bhaisaab
GitHub user bhaisaab opened a pull request:

https://github.com/apache/cloudstack/pull/1370

Support jdk8 mvnupgrades

Was learning about JDK8, lambdas, streams etc today. Thought it would be a
good idea to get ACS codebase to latest mvn and jdk8. This is a WIP branch
pushed on ACS remote so feel free to push changes if you're a committer or send
PR.

Major changes:
- Moved to latest JDK8
- Moved to latest Maven 3.3.9 (-T threaded compilations appears faster)
- Upgraded several dependencies to latest minor versions (or major in few
cases)

What fails/unsupported or TODOs:
- Unit tests in cloud-server and few other places
- F5 plugin fails, tried to resolve the issue but I was unable to grok it
- Major spring framework version (that would be a lot of work on its own)
- Major servlet version changes
- Fix packaging, init.d/system.d JAVA_HOME paths
- Check ACS agents with JDK/JRE8 (kvm, cpvm, ssvm)
- Check and configure GC related changes wrt JRE7/JRE8 (in any configs, say
tomcat configs)
- Check agains compatibility guide:
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/8-compatibility-guide-2156366.html

What works:
- Compiling in -Dnoredist with -DskipTests to test if ACS codebase (minus
unit tests) worked (non-issue once we fix the failing unit tests)
- Deploy db worked
- Running the management server locally with Java8

You can merge this pull request into a Git repository by running:

$ git pull https://github.com/apache/cloudstack support-jdk8-mvnupgrades

Alternatively you can review and apply these changes as the patch at:

https://github.com/apache/cloudstack/pull/1370.patch

To close this pull request, make a commit to your master/trunk branch
with (at least) the following in the commit message:

This closes #1370

But yes i will take a holistic look at the code and refactor when I get
back to it.
