All,

Just wanted to let the community know that I have decided to work on Apache
CloudStack again. I have taken up a position at ShapeBlue, so you will be
seeing me around @dev and @users. For the new members of the community and
others who I have not interacted with, here is small self introduction. I
started my journey with CloudStack, in late 2010 as cloud.com employee. Later
spent 4 years till late 2014 working on various CloudStack features (EIP, GSLB,
NAAS, NetScaler integration, native SDN controller, distributed virtual router,
event bus to name few). I was working on NFV solution on OpenStack over a year.
I am excited to join back the community, looking forward to interact with you.

Thanks,
Murali

[Proposal] NCC (NetScaler ControlCenter) Integration With Auto Provision VPX in CloudStack

2015-07-24 Thread Rajesh Battala
Hi All,

I would like to integrate NetScaler Control Center with Auto Provision VPX
facility in CloudStack.

What is NCC?
NCC (Netscaler Control Center) is a Manager which controls all NS devices life
cycle and Service Configurations on the devices.
It's an appliance, downloadable from [2] and free of cost

Benefits of using NCC:
Capacity pooling across all NetScaler infrastructure. NetScaler Control Center
is designed to efficiently pool and manage capacity across all NetScaler
appliances including physical (MPX), virtual (VPX), and multi-tenant (SDX) form
factors

End-to-end automation across all NetScaler appliances. Using NetScaler Control
Center, the complexity of provisioning and deploying ADC functions on a large
pool of NetScaler appliances is completely hidden from both the cloud provider
and the cloud tenant

Guaranteed SLAs through service aware resource allocation. Cloud providers need
to guarantee performance and availability SLAs to different cloud tenants.
NetScaler Control Center provides granular control over ADC resource allocation
policies, giving the provider flexibility in creating differentiated SLAs for
cloud tenants based on their application's needs. A simple and intuitive
workflow to construct service packages for different tenant tiers simplifies
the SLA creation process. Service packages can be defined with the following
parameters and are customizable per tenant:

  * Appliance type. The target appliance type on which a logical NetScaler
instance for the tenant is created.
  * Isolation type. Option to choose between fully dedicated instances and
shared instances.
  * Resource allocation. The amount of CPU, memory, and SSL capacity to be
allocated for each tenant's dedicated instance.
  * Software versions. The specific version of NetScaler firmware for each
tenant's dedicated instance-allows for version and upgrade independence between
tenants.

FS for this feature is at [1].

What is Auto Provision VPX in CloudStack?

NCC can manage the NS devices added by Admin. If NCC needs to allocate a new
VPX device to a guest network then NCC can request CloudStack to create a NS
VPX in CloudStack fleet and this VPX will be used by NCC to provide ADC
functionality in the guest network. How this works is explained in [1].

 Hi all,

As you might know, we at PCextreme are using CloudStack for our public
cloud offering and have been looking for a CloudStack dev for a long time.

We found one; so let me introduce Boris Schrijver.

Boris will be our fulltime CloudStack developer with no other purpose
 then making CloudStack better :)

CloudStack is a Apache project, so it will be Boris contributing to
CloudStack and NOT PCextreme as a company. He might become a committer
 one day, who knows.

Today is his first day, so it will take a bit before you'll see the

RE: Third party VR / L2 support

2015-06-23 Thread Rajesh Battala
Your views are correct in managing the 3rd party VRs
I see people try to use external devices to provide network services if they
see VR cannot handle the performance or stability or if the admin thinks third
party providers can do well w.r.t their environment.

In current cloudstack, CloudStack VR is the only option to be on Data Path and
majority of network services can be delegated to third party.

Am looking at how NetScaler can be leveraged to be a VR in CloudStack.

Agree to what Funs mentioned. The current network service model is flexible,
there is option to select a provider for a given service by means of network
offering.
About using 3rd party VR, there are 2 possibilities:
- Fully replace the existing VR with 3rd party VR
- Both co-exist and complement each other

CS manages the lifecycle of VR. For 3rd party (especially virtual appliances),
it needs to be decided what is the best way to manage lifecycle. If CS is able
to manage the lifecycle then it can be similar to existing VR (spinning up
instances when required). If managed externally, then a pre-created pool of
appliances needs to be registered from CS and used.

Hi Christian and Paul,

I agree that the VR/VPC construct could do with some improvements, the biggest
being that it should actually be api driven and allow for more flexible
networking/services combined with scale out itself (we’re looking into this
actually). All of these things bring along their own problems and should be
tackled piece by piece, if we’d want to be efficient we should first blot out
the API and then start pushing services in, which is difficult at the speed it
is moving at.

The driver model in Cloudstack already supports the decoupling of services via
network service providers (plugins) and ties in with the way the “network
service offerings work with service capabilities and supported services.
At SBP we use NSX-mh for the service “Connectivity”, we could add “SourceNat”,
“StaticNat” and “Port Forwarding” to this for NSX if we want to, but decided to
leave that in the VR back then as these services were rather new in NSX. My
point being that you can already mix and match things and are not stuck with
the VR/VPC, and you can actually use devices on that level if need be, if you
create the service offerings for them.
At the moment anyone can already create a plugin that exposes a single
functionality or multiple, and expose that as a service that is offered,
examples of these are the Palo-Alto, SRX, F5, Netscaler, Cisco VNMC, NSX and
Nuage. I’m not saying it’s simple or easy, but if you know the API of what you
want to integrate with you can.
The construction of the plugin module has its own unique challenges, and I
agree with John Burwell (Shape Blue) and Paul that we need to change the way
this all hangs together if we want more flexibility and ease of integration in
the future.

BGP is brought in for use with IPv6, the first code for that has just gone in
from Suresh via Wilder. As that runs on top of Quagga you could do OSPF with
that too. This again leads me to believe we really need to change the way the
RV/VPC receives configuration, I’ve spoken to a big Cloudstack user, whom also
contributes, that wants to be able to do more with HaProxy, read full
configuration freedom, and after hearing this and bumping my head against it in
the past it made perfect sense to me.

On the topic of L2 networking we’re bridging in and out a lot of networks at
the moment for “Enterprise” production customers. Ranging from legacy
environments to cloud environments or environments where we have full cloud
workloads but also need physical iron due to “regulatory requirements” or
because there is no viable alternative yet (or we haven’t made a plugin that
exposes that functionality from another device/VM/container that can be placed
in a service offering etc). I think in our case L2 is not always a requirement
for all areas as such and I’d prefer L3 in most cases where viable. We solved
things that way, the L2 way, because that was our frame of mind, although it
may be a requirement in your case.

Cheers,

Funs

Folks who have asked to be mentors of GSoC projects.

Please check the proposals to ASF in google melange and indicated willingness
to mentor.
Please engage the students to improve their proposal and make themselves known
on the list.

 Hi Mentors,

It's finally time to start ranking the proposals. Please excuse my
quietness the last few days. We will start by getting a rough overview
of the proposals that we want to accept if we had an unlimited amount of
 slots.

For this I now ask you to go through the proposals and slide the Wish
to mentor slider to Yes if you want to spend time mentoring a
specific proposal. You have time for this until

  April 12 00:00 UTC

(failing to meet this deadline will result in a reduction in score for
that proposal). No ranking yet please.

Please also acquaint yourself with the guidelines at [1]. We are now in the
 pre-selection phase.

To answer the question whether it is possible to mentor more than one project
 up-front: yes, but.
I'll quote myself from last year:

 quote
 1. We strive for a 100% success rate. Google is investing money and
they want to see something in return (successful projects). That means
that we can't just treat our GSoC projects like ordinary study
projects were we are OK with some projects failing. That in turn means we
need to put in more mentoring effort than for the ordinary university student.

 2. You can mentor more than one student if you convince me that you
know what you are doing and that you will strive for a 100% success rate.

 3. Mentors with more than one student will name backup mentors for their
 projects.

 4. In case of two projects competing for a slot, the slot will be
awarded to the project mentored by the mentor with less projects.
 /quote

As always, if you have questions, please ask on this list.

 Cheers,

 Uli

Are you using traffic lables?
Hyperv will work only in dedicated zone only , you cannot replace esx host with
hyperv host and make the zone to work.

There are no issues with VR to run on Hyperv. It works well.
If you are using traffic lables, make sure the traffic lable matches to vswitch
name on the hyperv host. If there is not matching vswitch name it can fail
creating the VM.

Subject: hyper-v VR does not have management network

Hi,

We use hyper-v as the hypervisor for cloudstack 4.4.1. The ssvm and cpvm start
successfully.

But the VR vm can not connect to the cloudstack management. We found that the
VR vm used guest virtual switch for the first and second network, and public
virtual switch for the third network, and several network without virtual
switch. So we checked the log in cloudstack management, and found the
parameters to create the CR vm, shown as follows:

2014-12-19 Thread Rajesh Battala
Network configuration in DB is correct.
What I mean to convey is, even linklocal network is present hyperv won't use
that linklocal network .

Can you please let us know what is that actual problem you are facing when
deploying the VR in Hyper-V setup.
So that we can help you looking at the logs and solve the issue.

Thanks

Do you mean our configuration about cloudstack has something wrong? This
network linkLocal exists in our cloudstack networks table in DB, which has
traffic_type Control, broadcast_domain_type LinkLocal, gateway 169.254.
0.0/16

How can we make the right configuration?

In the nic json details all the nics have names .
Name value is present in each nic details. All the nics have either public

We found that the
VR vm used guest virtual switch for the first and second network, and public
virtual switch for the third network, and several network without virtual
switch. So we checked the log in cloudstack management, and found the
parameters to create the CR vm, shown as follows:

log rotation for catalina.out

2014-12-11 Thread Rajesh Battala
Hi All,

On 4.5 mgmt serve I see catalina.out log file is getting rotated daily.
But I didn't the configuration of the rotate file.
I have searched in /etc/logrotate.d/ and in log4j.
I didn't find pointers where the config is defined for the catalina.out to get
log rotate.

Can anyone share the details.

Thanks

You got me wrong. I have not suggested to change permissions. I have suggested
to change the locale to US English(instead of Chinese/Japanese) of account with
which the Hyper-V Agent service is running.

I suspect that your windows server account is running in different locale other
than English.

We will try to create a new user to run this agent.

Hi,
To rule out SMB issues, in the global config can you enable true to create
systemvmvm's on local storage?

It will try to create systemvm;s on local storage.

Please look at the agent log in the log manager in hyperv host to find the root
cause for the ssvm start vm failure.
You can post the same logs of hyperv agent and mgmt. server log failure.

Thanks

Being a committer allows many contributors to contribute more autonomously. For
developers, it makes it easier to submit changes and eliminates the need to

contributions are development-related or otherwise, it is a recognition of a

this commit (b0d726a872e2859a56ee677c15079cc3a59ab894) is in 4.4-forward and
not in 4.4 which is committed by jaypal yesterday
when I have fixed my bug I have to rebase jaypal commit which is in 4.4-forward
and build is successfully.

When you have cherry-picked my commit to 4.4, this
commit(b0d726a872e2859a56ee677c15079cc3a59ab894) is not cherry-picked. This

Subject: [ANNOUNCE] Demetrius Tsitrelis as committer

Folks - this one's a little belated - we went through the invite process around
the time of the mail issues, and somehow we didn't send the announcement to
dev@.
I noticed while doing some housekeeping this week, and wanted to send out the
announcement anyways just to give Demetrius the recognition. :)

The Project Management Committee (PMC) for Apache CloudStack has asked
Demetrius Tsitrelis to become a committer and we are pleased to announce that
he has accepted.

Being a committer allows many contributors to contribute more autonomously. For
developers, it makes it easier to submit changes and eliminates the need to
have contributions reviewed via the patch submission process. Whether
contributions are development-related or otherwise, it is a recognition of a
contributor's participation in the project and commitment to the project and
the Apache Way.

Please join me in congratulating Demetrius!

2014-06-05 Thread Rajesh Battala
Hi Daan,

Improve the logging for VM snapshot failures as it is not supported. Right now
it is throwing NPEs

2. 945e879bf221454cd42f1e7ef0a46e9a4aa6a156 CLOUDSTACK-6833 [Hyper-V]
Volume snapshot creation returns success even though snapshots are not
supported for Hyper-V

Thanks

Regarding Blocker bug CLOUDSTACK-6603

2014-06-03 Thread Rajesh Battala
Hi,

This bug https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CLOUDSTACK-6603 [Upgrade]DB
Exception while Autoscale monitoring after upgrading from 4.3 to 4.4] got
introduced by the feature of Autoscaling without netscaler

A new column last_interval got added to autoscale_vmgroups table by this
commit (dc151115be3e922933ea26ab1507eb6469a91e11).
Schema of autoscale_vmgroups table got changed in wrong version of schema file
cause the upgrade failed.
Instead of adding schema change to the upgrade path file it was added to
setup/db/db/schema-40to410.sql file. It should be added to schema43to44 upgrade
path.
Because of this issues, upgrade from 4.3 to 4.4 and 4.3 to 4.4 will fail.

@Tuna, can you please have a look at your commit and fix it.

@Daan, if this issue CLOUDSTACK-6603 is not fixed, upgrades from 4.2 to 4.4 and
4.3 to 4.4 will fail.

As 4.4 feature freeze had happened long back, Am not sure whether we can change
db schema now in 4.4 branch

Thanks
Rajesh Battala
