[ALC] ALC Indore Event - Webinar Apache DolphinSchedular (November 2022)

2022-11-08 Thread Priya Sharma
Hello everyone,

The ALC [1] Indore Chapter [2] is planning to organize a series of
trans-community technical events in India, in collaboration with the
Apache DolphinSchedular [3] community.

The first virtual event "Tech Talk on BigData Infrastructure with
Apache DolphinScheduler" is to be scheduled on 19th November 2022,
Saturday.

As per ALC Event guidelines [4], we would like to request PMC approval
for this upcoming ALC Indore Event.

In the session we will be covering the following topics:

1. New Generation of Big Data Workflow Orchestration Platform: Apache
DolphinScheduler
- Help the audience to quickly understand the latest features of the
new generation of Modern Data Stack: "de-specialization",
"de-centralization", "extremely fast experience", "use as needed",
- Sharing and explaining what is MDS( Modern Data Stack)
- How to use the Apache open-source project to implement MDS.

(Speaker: William GUO, Apache Foundation Member)

2. DolphinScheduler, what is it, and how it works
- What is DolphinScheduler?
- How to create your first workflow?
- Why is it useful during data pipeline jobs?
- How does it schedule workflow?
- What ecosystem is have?

(Speaker: Jay Chung, Apache DolphinScheduler PMC)

Details of the event can be found here[5].
Registrations for the event with be done through Eventbrite [6].

P.S. It will be an online event and it would be great if we can
publish it on the Apache events page for better reach.

Re: [DISCUSS] ASF Mastodon instance?

2022-11-08 Thread Jarek Potiuk
We have yesterday applied to https://hub.fosstodon.org/ for an account
in Apache Airflow. And I encourage others who are interested to make
their own choice and do the same for their PMC.

My personal opinion is that such a discussion makes very little sense
if the goal is "let's get a centrally managed solution first" before
we even know if that makes sense and where our users are and how the
situation evolves.

Mastodon makes it relatively painless to migrate between servers if
needs be -
https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2019/06/how-to-migrate-from-one-server-to-another/
- this the whole point of federation approach, if you do not like the
moderation and COC you get at one server, you move and you bring your
users with you (if they concur).

IMHO It's far better if each of the individuals who are interested to
run Mastodon, will do it on behalf of their PMC, just try it and apply
at the server of their choice.

Let's gather experiences and see what works. If we find that we need
an Apache run server and have good rationale behind it, we might
decide to do it (or not).

And I think it's far too early (if even at all) to expect INFRA to do
anything about it on the central level or get a server that one of the
ASF members will run for all the PMCs.

On a philosophical level - I personally believe trying to centralise
the approach is also pretty much 100% against the whole idea of
federation. The federation is not there to "centralise" the approach,
but to make it easier to distribute it and the ASF is VERY well
prepared for that distributed world. The PMC independence and
self-governance except very, very few central services and really
important aspects (like licensing. release policy and publishing) is
precisely what federation idea supports. And federation means that at
the PMC level you have both the benefit of choosing the server as well
as the responsibility to make the choice and bear the cost of setting
up/managing and moderating. It looks like centralization is an attempt
to reap the benefits of decentralisation without bearing the cost of
managing it.

Somehow it does not click to try to centralize it back.
