IMO, Flexicious does not fit in any of the existing sections.

It probably falls in a new section Components Library .

But then, there are a few other component libs that would deserve to

Re: Setting up Flex SDK for development

2014-04-02 Thread jude
I was able to get the SDK to build after some time. I took some notes along
the way and I've numbered any discussion points.

TLDR; I was able to setup the SDK for development, updated online tutorial
for installing Flex SDK manually and it needs proofread, and suggested
changes.

I think the README should point to the wiki. (1) I used this page along
with the wiki to get it to finally build,
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/FLEX/1.2+Setting+up+Manually. I
added a sub page that duplicates the existing page but has some edits and a
few new sections,
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/FLEX/How+to+setup+the+Flex+SDK+manually+on+Mac.
I didn't want to edit the main page until someone went through my changes
and verified it works (it runs for me but it might not on another system).
Someone can add those back in once it's proofed. If someone wants to go
through that sometime it would be nice. I might make a video tutorial on a
guest account (for OSX) when I get the time or if someone gets to it before
me go ahead. (1.1)

There were a few steps that were new to me that weren't in the
instructions. I moved to OSX a few years ago and I knew very little about
the unix command line. I added instructions on how to check the operating
system path, how to add items to it and how to find the path to a command.
I also had to update the build.properties to not point to playerglobal
11.1. Maybe we could set the full path in the env variable rather than
partial path? (2)

The instructions say to set the JAVA_HOME or ANT_HOME in the env.properties
file but the env.template.properties does not mention anything about them.
Is this because they are already in the operating system path and they can
be left out? (3)

When I ran ant the first time it showed this message which may or may not
be related to the next item. (4)

[available] DEPRECATED - available used to override an existing property.
[available] Build file should not reuse the same property name for
different values.

TLF Home was not reporting the path even though it was set (4):

check-tlf-home:

check-compile-env:
 [echo] OS: Mac OS X...

This may have been intentional where it only does something on a release
build. Whether it is required or not I think it should still show if the
path is correct. I updated the code below which shows the path but is also
might make it required:

target name=check-tlf-home unless=TLF_HOME.set
description=Check TLF_HOME is a directory.

echo message=TLF_HOME is ${env.TLF_HOME}/

available file=${env.TLF_HOME}
type=dir
property=TLF_HOME.set/

fail message=TLF_HOME must be set correctly for a release build
unless=TLF_HOME.set/

/target

When I was able to run ant main it seemed to hang at the
download-adobe-flex-sdk section. The screen wouldn't scroll down and
finally I realized it might be asking me to accept a license and I pressed
Y and I think it continued or it might be that I hit Y at the same time the
download finished and the next step occurred. (5)

When I was setting this up I manually downloaded the Flash Player
Projector, AIR SDK, Java, Ant, PixelBender and the few others listed. When
the ant main ran for the first time it said downloading in numerous places
but the lines were blank. Did I have to download those? (6)

check-compile-env:
 [echo] OS: Mac OS X / 10.9.2 / x86_64
 [echo] VM: Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM / 25.0-b70

Re: [DISCUSSION] Release Apache Flex FlexUnit 4.2.0 RC3

2014-04-02 Thread Justin Mclean
Hi,

Alex: Ok, I'll ask on legal-discuss.
I've already asked on general@icubator - given they deal with LICENCE an
dNOTICE all of the time it seemed a good place to ask.

Alex: No disagreement there. I think we've handled that correctly by not
including the full text of the MIT and BSD licenses in the LICENSE file.
Then why do you want to add BSD back into LICENCE? Adding the short or long
version has the same effect legally and is not required for source
distributions (see below).

Apache does not have a license to those files.
Not sure what you mean there, they are licensed under BSD and by the terms of
the BSD licence we can use the source code as long as we leave the headers in
place. Note that it's only a binary distribution that requires the BSD licence
to be placed elsewhere. That's 2 of the 3 clauses of the BSD licence.

* Redistributions of source code must retain the above copyright
notice, this list of conditions and the following disclaimer.
* Redistributions in binary form must reproduce the above copyright
notice, this list of conditions and the following disclaimer in the
documentation and/or other materials provided with the distribution.

The header are the only place the BSD license is found in FlexUnit 1 [1] -
there is no LICENSE file or anything else.

Alex: Because we normally ask those filing bugs to provide steps to
 reproduce.
It's on my list to do, but I'm not full time on this project or paid to work on
it so not sure when I'll be able to get to it.

Thanks,
Justin

Once I finish converting the site to the CMS, please do add the IntelliJ
tutorial -- that would actually be really useful for me as well :)

I will do.

Note that FlexUnit for IntelliJ has comprehensive description in IDEA online
help already ( search: Testing ActionScript and Flex Application in online
help),
So there is no point IMO to replicate this in the tutorial.
So I will rather put it as a step by step tutorial + pointers to the online
documentation.

Alex: I am not totally clear on this part, but Adobe still says Adobe has to
sign a software grant before those FlexUnit 1 files can get re-licensed under
the AL. That plus my interpretation that the LICENSE file should warn folks
that there are non-AL files in the distributions means that these files may not
truly be part of Apache. I've asked on the legal-discuss thread how/why it
makes a difference if we check in BSD files into the repo vs downloading them
from some other non-Apache source.

IMO, Flexicious does not fit in any of the existing sections.

It probably falls in a new section Components Library .

But then, there are a few other component libs that would deserve to
be included as well (eg. Elixir, etc...).

I would say, first in, first served.

Can you please provide the content you would want to be included (3 ~

Subject: Time for Change

Hi all,

It is with mixed emotions that I must admit that it's time for me to
step down from the Flex PMC. It was an honor to be a mentor to this
project through incubation and I can say without reservation that this
community has been fully integrated into Apache. It's time for me to
recognize that I simply don't have the bandwidth to contribute as I
had hoped I would. I need to leave things in other very capable hands.

Flex is different from a lot of Apache projects in terms of how it got
here and the community around it. I think that maybe the community is
still trying to navigate how Apache is not only different from Adobe,
but also different from GitHub, SourceForge, and other open source
environments. In some ways I think those differences are good for the
Flex community, but in other ways I think the Flex community brings
something to Apache that will help Apache grow into the future. I look
forward to seeing more of the Flex PMC become ASF members and having a
greater impact on the foundation! I want to be clear that there is no
bad blood between me and anybody on the PMC. I'd be happy to work with
any of you again in the future.

I'll stay subscribed to the private@ list so if there are mentor-like
questions to be answered I'll be happy to do my best. I will probably
unsubscribe from the dev@ list in a few days to reduce my daily email
load.

Thanks to everyone for allowing me to be a part of the community. I
wish you all the best going forward!

Greg

That's great!
Very keen to know if it includes component explorer and style explorer.

On Fri, Mar 28, 2014 at 9:12 PM, Alex Harui aha...@adobe.com wrote:

 Hi folks,

Adobe legal and business folks have approved the donation of several
Flex-related items to Apache. The donation paperwork is on its way to get
VP signature (yes there could be some delay or reversal there, but I don't
expect any), but I'm bringing this up now because we should start thinking
about how to handle the contents of the donation.

 In the donation is:

 1. Several Flex articles from the ADC web-site.
 2. An updated version of the FDB debugger that contains support for
 ActionScript Workers
 3. The FlexPMD source code
 4. The Mobile Trader demo application
 5. The specification for the MXML language
 6. An XML merging utility source code from the Flex QA team.
 7. The Squiggly spell-checker source code
 8. The Tour De Flex application source code
 9. The source code for a prototype of a code coverage utility that I wrote.

Links to the original Adobe content is at the end of this email. When you
go to the Adobe links you see a complete web article, but when donated,
several things will be missing and several things will need adjusting
before hosting the content at Apache.

 A) None of the videos in the VideoTraining article are being donated
because the videos are heavily branded by Adobe watermarks. Adobe says
our version of the article can link to the Adobe videos, but Apache does
not want us to host Adobe videos on Apache servers. At some point in
time, I will try to get these videos posted on YouTube so we don't have to
worry about them being taken off of Adobe servers someday. Adobe Legal
has ok'd posting the videos on YouTube, but I need to get some other
approvals before doing it. We also need to get approval from Apache to
link to the Adobe-hosted videos in the interim. We have approval to link
to them when posted on YouTube.

 B) All of the devnet articles load Adobe CSS files. Our version of these
articles should not look exactly like the Adobe colors so we need to
create our own CSS file and adjust the articles to load those CSS files
instead. I am not the right person to do this work, so a volunteer is
 needed.

 C) The Adobe icon and all head shots of authors are not being donated.
The Apache version of these articles should not link to the head shots on
 the Adobe servers.

 D) The articles have sidebars and footers that point to lots of other
Adobe content. Those sidebars and footers should be removed/replaced.

 E) Not all of the Tour De Flex content is being donated. Both TDF3 and
TDF4 source code is in the donation, but articles written by non-Adobe
authors are not in the donation. TDF will need to be adjusted to not
reference the missing articles. The non-Adobe authors need to be
contacted to donate their article to Apache.

 F) Other videos and images used in examples are missing from TDF and
devnet articles if they were of real people or third-party brands. We
will need to generate replacements, or adjust the articles to work without
the missing videos and images. We will have to be careful as the articles
may still point to the Adobe-hosted videos and images.

 G) Some articles point to zip files. In the donation, the zip files are
expanded and the actual zip file is missing because we should be checking
source and not zips into our repos. Build scripts will be needed to
create zips that go with the production articles.

And then we need to decide where to still all of this source. I guess
flex-utilities for most of it. I would probably create a branch of
flex-sdk for the FDB code. The XML Merge code will go in the BlazeDS repo
with the rest of BlazeDS. Where should be put all of the devnet html
 files until they are ready?

 Thanks,
 -Alex

@Maurice I've just added information about fabrication framework. I will
leave it on the staging for now because Nick is working on flex unit

Hi,

Tour De Flex replaced the explorers (although some of the explorers did a
bit more). The explorers were released by Adobe Consulting and were no
 longer updated past 2.0.1.

There were some Flex 3 updates - but even so - they would need a bit of of
overhaul if they were donated.

This link does include the source code to the style explorer and link to the
others:

You are free to push the changeset. Nothing is linked to the FlexUnit
tutorials, so won't bother anybody.

Either way, they would require quite an overhaul because they were all MX
based. Tour De Flex was supposed to incorporate their functionality for
the most part.

  5 lines paragraph) .

Re: CreationComplete of ViewStack components

2014-04-02 Thread Oleg Konovalov
Alex,

I tried to put my code populating dropdownlists (DDLs) into
 onContentCreationComplete of the whole TitleWindow,
but there my DDLs are still NULL.
Or you were talking about that ContentCreationComplete of the ViewStack?
that NavigatorContent? Form? DDLs themselves?

Please advise.

TIA,
Oleg.

 Subject: CreationComplete of ViewStack components

 Hi,

I have a popup (TitleWindow) which has ViewStack with a few
 NavigatorContent's which contain

Form's with a bunch of components (TextInputs, DropDownLists, etc).

User is editing some data, so when he selects ADG row and clicks Edit,

that row data is displayed in that popup.

I could easily populate data on the first NavigatorContent via
 onCreationComplete,

but subsequent ones are showing me all DropDownList's as NULL.

I tried to do myNavigationContent1.initialize() and
 myViewStack.initialize(), that didn't help.

 Any help is very appreciated.

 TIA,

 Oleg.

Those were of great help for me at the beginning when I started working on
flex and I'm sure it would be very helpful for beginners too, who are
looking out for both functionalities and the code together, for learning
and referring quickly.

Ofcourse that was on MX and I'm not sure if that was updated for spark.

  Hi folks,

Adobe legal and business folks have approved the donation of several
Flex-related items to Apache. The donation paperwork is on its way to
 get
VP signature (yes there could be some delay or reversal there, but I
 don't
expect any), but I'm bringing this up now because we should start
 thinking
about how to handle the contents of the donation.

  In the donation is:

  1. Several Flex articles from the ADC web-site.
  2. An updated version of the FDB debugger that contains support for
  ActionScript Workers
  3. The FlexPMD source code
  4. The Mobile Trader demo application
  5. The specification for the MXML language
  6. An XML merging utility source code from the Flex QA team.
  7. The Squiggly spell-checker source code
  8. The Tour De Flex application source code
  9. The source code for a prototype of a code coverage utility that I
 wrote.

Links to the original Adobe content is at the end of this email. When
 you
go to the Adobe links you see a complete web article, but when donated,
several things will be missing and several things will need adjusting
before hosting the content at Apache.

  A) None of the videos in the VideoTraining article are being donated
because the videos are heavily branded by Adobe watermarks. Adobe says
our version of the article can link to the Adobe videos, but Apache does
not want us to host Adobe videos on Apache servers. At some point in
time, I will try to get these videos posted on YouTube so we don't have
 to
worry about them being taken off of Adobe servers someday. Adobe Legal
has ok'd posting the videos on YouTube, but I need to get some other
approvals before doing it.

We
will need to generate replacements, or adjust the articles to work
 without
the missing videos and images. We will have to be careful as the
 articles
may still point to the Adobe-hosted videos and images.
