Re: Discussion: Possible fixes for GERONIMO-5180

2010-03-18 Thread Ashish Jain
I tried fixing this up by making FileKeystoreInstance serializable however I
hit another issue

java.rmi.UnmarshalException: error unmarshalling return; nested exception
is:
java.io.WriteAbortedException: writing aborted;
java.io.NotSerializableE
xception: org.apache.geronimo.kernel.basic.ProxyMethodInterceptor

onImpl_Stub.java:400)
at
javax.management.remote.rmi.RMIConnector$RemoteMBeanServerConnection.
invoke(RMIConnector.java:984)

This prompts me to even make ProxyMethodInterceptor serializable and all the
inner classes too.

So as to not make such major modification which I am sure will keep
affecting one class after other.
I wish we can use another approach which is similar to #1 but not same. We
can add a method to
KeystoreManager interface something like initializeKeystores and do a
kernel invoke of this method
instead of previous one where we were doing a getAttribute on a method which
does not return anything
The newly added method initializeKeystores will in turn calls up
getKeystores. This will help us attain
the goal of adding the newly created keystores through Java provided keytool
as Gbean in geronimo.

Thanks
Ashish

 Interesting... Since the problem is really that FileKeystoreInstance is
 not seriazable, I don't see why changing the getter return type would help
 if the received objects are still instances of FileKeystoreInstance. Anyway,
 I agree with Joe - Option 1 looks more elegant.

 The serialization problem is popping up due to the return type associated

 I still don't quite understand Option 2. So what would be stored in this

 Hi Joe,

 Thanks for your comments. The intent of using option #2 was to make use
 of getAttribute and also since modifying the KeystoreManager interface
 will
 not have any effect on any existing functionalities. However as you
 pointed
 out a get method w/o any return types may be misleading.

 I don't know much about the details of the problem but it seems to me
 that you would either make the class serializable (option #1) or exclude
 it
 from serialization if it is not necessary. I don't see how this would
 impact any existing functions. So I guess I would vote for #1.

 I don't understand why you would want to have a get* method that
 doesn't return anything - but perhaps I'm missing the point of option #2.

 Hi ALL,

 I have opened up a JIRA GERONIMO-5180 on the unlockKeystore command
 failure if keystore is created with keytool.exe. I was trying to fix
 this
 issue
 which requires some changes in the class declaration or interface.
 Following code is being utilized to fix up the issue
 KeystoreInstance[]
 keystores=(KeystoreInstance[])kernel.getAttribute(abstractName,keystores);
 where  abstractName is obtained through
 org.apache.geronimo.management.geronimo.KeystoreManager. However I
 hit the following exception:

 java.rmi.UnmarshalException: error unmarshalling return; nested
 exception is:
java.io.WriteAbortedException: writing aborted;
 java.io.NotSerializableE
 xception: org.apache.geronimo.security.keystore.FileKeystoreInstance

 onImpl_Stub.java:400)
at
 javax.management.remote.rmi.RMIConnector$RemoteMBeanServerConnection.
 invoke(RMIConnector.java:984)

 There are 2 ways to fix this up.

 1) Make the class
 org.apache.geronimo.security.keystore.FileKeystoreInstance serializable.
 2) add a new variable in FileKeystoreManager and add a new method in
 KeystoreManager which does not return anything and just gives a call
 to getKeystores(). For example getKeystores1() as the new method in
 KeystoreManager and a new variable as keystores1.

 I shall prefer #2 over #1 as it should not have any effect on
 existing functionalities.

 It should be possible to make use of JMXSecureConnector for clustering.
 Currently if we use JMXSecureConnector than we have to disable the clustering
 modules.

 Requests for db pool resources will exceed Max Pool Size when

 Key: GERONIMO-4993
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/GERONIMO-4993
 Project: Geronimo
  Issue Type: Bug
  Security Level: public(Regular issues)
Affects Versions: 2.1.3, 2.2
 Environment: Linux and Windows XP
Reporter: Eric Phetteplace
Assignee: David Jencks
 Fix For: 2.1.5

 Attachments: _PoolTest.war, screenshot-1.jpg

 In production, I have 100 EJBNetworkService threads. It works OK until
 there's a spike in traffic and all the threads are being used, and the 40
 max pool size is ignored, and Geronimo makes 100's of DB connections.
 In production, I am using an Oracle DB pool, so the DBAs aren't happy when my
 servers use up all the available server connections.
 To recreate:
 1. Change config.xml and start Geronimo:
 module name=org.apache.geronimo.configs/openejb/2.2-SNAPSHOT/car
 gbean name=EJBNetworkService
 attribute name=port${OpenEJBPort + PortOffset}/attribute
 attribute name=host${ServerHostname}/attribute
 attribute
 name=multicastHost${MulticastDiscoveryAddress}/attribute
 attribute
 name=multicastPort${MulticastDiscoveryPort}/attribute
 attribute name=clusterName${ClusterName}/attribute
 *attribute name=threads5/attribute*
 /gbean
 2. Reconfigure the jdbc/ArchiveDS DB Pool:
 Max Pool Size: 3
 Blocking Timeout: 1000
 Idle Timeout: 1
 3.  Install WAR
 4. In web browser, go to http://localhost:8080/PoolTest/PoolTest. Reload it
 5 times. Take your time It should be fine, and will give you an error when
 the pool is maxed.
 5. In JMX Viewer, go to Geronimo MBeans, JCAConnectionManager, and pull up
 jdbc/ArchiveDS. Note the connection count. Looks good.
 6. Wait for the connection count to return to 0.
 7. In your browser, hold down F5 so the page reloads many times.
 8. Observe the connection count again. It will be over connections.
 9. If you repeat 6-9 you can easily get 20 connections. I just held F5
 for 6 seconds and there are 60 connections.
 I will attach WAR (I don't see an option on this screen).

Rick, one comment on the geronimo-jpa_2.0_spec changes -

I'm adding the following back in, as the JPA 2.0 Spec suggests using a
provider cache per classloader and even requires implementing a
public void clearCachedProviders()
method to handle flushing the cache.

Otherwise, initial quick scan of changes (w/o testing) looks good.

I'll run the stand-alone JPA 2.0 TCK next week, after we get our OpenJPA
2.0.0 branch created.

Donald Woods commented on GERONIMO-5178:

General question on discovering Providers.
In the JPA2 spec api, we now have something like -
   try {
// add each one to our list
ListObject serviceProviders =
ProviderLocator.getServices(PersistenceProvider.class.getName(),
this.getClass(), cl);
for (Object o : serviceProviders) {
 providers.add((PersistenceProvider)o);
 }
} catch (ClassNotFoundException e) {
. . .
Since multiple providers can be listed in one services file, should the
failure/exception to load one cause none of them to be returned? Should we
silently eat or log the exceptions and just return null if we fail to load any
of the configured providers?

 Inconsistent handling of META-INF/services files by different Geronmo specs.
 -

 Key: GERONIMO-5178
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/GERONIMO-5178
 Project: Geronimo
  Issue Type: Sub-task
  Security Level: public(Regular issues)
Affects Versions: 3.0
Reporter: Rick McGuire
Assignee: Rick McGuire
 Fix For: 3.0

 A number of the Geronimo specs use the provider resolution pattern defined by
 the ServiceLoader class in Java 6 to resolve different provider classes. In
 this pattern, a file with a given class name in the META-INF/services
 directory can define one or more provider classes for a given source
 interface name. As implemented by the ServiceLoader class, these files can
 contain multiple lines with pure comment lines and line comments on lines
 that define classes, as well as multiple providers defined per file. Thus a
 file like this would be considered valiid:
 # A set of provider classes for the blah.blah interface
 org.apache.geronimo.foo.BlahImpl # The default first one
 org.apache.geronimo.bar.BlahImpl # The secondary fall back.
 The different spec projects that use these files parse them under different
 assumptions:
 - Some unilaterally take the first line without any comment processing at all
 or recognition that there might be multiple providers defined per file.
 - Some projects allow for pure comment lines but don't parse for comments on
 a definition line.
 - Not all projects are opening these files assuming a utf-8 encoding.
 This could best be solved by refactoring the code to use some common methods.
  This refactoring will also allow OSGi-awareness to be added to the service
 file lookups.

 setjavaenv.sh used to require JAVA_HOME or JRE_HOME to be specified. Looks
 like it was updated to look for a java runtime in the PATH, and use that, if
 the environment variables weren't specified.
 On Mac OS, at least, this doesn't work. JAVA_HOME/JRE_HOME are used to set
 other variables. Namely EXT_DIRS and ENDORSED_DIRS. They aren't set properly,
 if JAVA_HOME/JRE_HOME aren't set. This causes runtime errors:

 It should be possible to make use of JMXSecureConnector for clustering.
 Currently if we use JMXSecureConnector than we have to disable the clustering
 modules.
