Re: [jira] Commented: (GERONIMO-3300) Upgrade Dojo to 0.9

2007-11-02 Thread Erik B. Craig

Paul,
Awesome plan!

I've been tracking the improvements that have been going on with dojo
since I started work on the monitoring project, and would be very
excited to get 1.0 in for later use.

Let's hold off on this until Dojo 1.0 is released.
http://dojotoolkit.org/2007/11/02/dojo-1-0-release-candidate-1

Time permitting it would be great to get this into Geronimo 2.1.

Since the new version of Dojo is not backwards compatible, and since existing
apps like the admin console and the monitoring plugin use the Dojo 0.4 plugin,
we should leave the current Dojo version in place alongside the new version.
This could be accomplished by using different contexts as I described above.

Key: GERONIMO-3300
URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/GERONIMO-3300
Project: Geronimo
 Issue Type: Improvement
 Security Level: public(Regular issues)
 Components: console

   Affects Versions: 2.0-M7
   Reporter: Jay D. McHugh
   Assignee: Jay D. McHugh

The new Dojo 0.9 Beta was just released.
It will reduce the footprint of the main dojo.js to under 50k - But will
require that some of the console
screens to be reworked because the widget system was completely redesigned and
is incompatible.

BTW, dojox.charting was missing from 0.9 but 1.0 includes it,
refactored from 0.4 and now using the powerful dojox.gfx library.

Best wishes,
Paul

I agree with Donald regarding introducing this console change when we try to
stabilize 2.0. I think it is best to provide a way to let both 0.4.x(may be
provided as a geronimo plugin) and 0.9 co-exist after 2.0.

Paul McMahan commented on GERONIMO-3300:

Since dojo 0.9 is incompatible with 0.4.x and is so technically different from
it I think we should try to get dojo 0.9 into the geronimo 2.0 release if at
all possible, even if it means going with beta level code. I agree that using
a beta could be risky. But because of the forward and backwards
incompatibility situation between the 0.9 and 0.4.x apis dojo developers will
have to choose which level of dojo to program against, and I believe they would
almost always go with 0.9 since it's the future of dojo and ajax and the 0.4.x
stream will be stabilized

If we can't get 0.9 into the 2.0 release then I agree that upgrading to it in a
maintenance stream (2.0.1) could be disruptive to geronimo users unless we also
leave 0.4.x in there. That could be accomplished by deploying the new version
of dojo to a different context, say /dojo.0.9, or maybe /dojo/0.9 would be
more clever... yeah I think that works better. The problem that this approach
would create is the extra server footprint since the full dojo library ain't
small.

Whatever approach we take I think it would be prudent to go ahead and change
the context of that dojo library that's already in the server from /dojo to
/dojo/0.4.3 so we have more flexibility later. We can do something clever so
that apps that reference /dojo/dojo.js will get the most recent version of dojo
that's available in geronimo, whatever that happens to be.

It will be a while before I have completed the changes to allow a switch to 0.9.

If I manage to finish before the final release comes out - Then I'll wait until
it does.

I just wanted to organize the subtasks under the larger task of upgrading so
that
I wouldn't be doing the work twice (once under 0.4.3 and then again under 0.9).

This will probably end up being for 2.0.1.

I would argue that it should go into the 2.1 stream. If we have to rewrite
code to migrate to 0.9, then we shouldn't break any user apps that used the
0.4.3 level we supplied in 2.0. A third digit rev shouldn't break users apps
unless we had no choice due to major server problems and changing Dojo levels
just to be current doesn't register as critical in my book.
