Attached stack trace.

Add workaround for a deadlock issue of Class.getAnnotation()
 -

 Key: HIVE-7409

Reporter: Tsuyoshi OZAWA
 Attachments: HIVE-7409.1.patch, stacktrace.txt

 [JDK-7122142|https://bugs.openjdk.java.net/browse/JDK-7122142] mentions that
there is a race condition in getAnnotations. This problem can lead deadlock.
The fix on JDK will be merged on jdk8, but hive supports jdk6/jdk7 currently.
Therefore, we should add workaround to avoid the issue.

The bug is also documented in the UDF wiki, in an information box at the

It seems that the expression caching doesn't work when using UDF inside
another UDF or a hive function.
 For example :
tbl has one row : 'a','b'
 The following query :
 {code:sql} select concat(custUDF(a),' ', custUDF(b)) from tbl; {code}
 returns 'a a'
seems to cache custUDF(a) and use it for custUDF(b).
Same query without the concat works fine.
Replacing the concat with another custom UDF also returns 'a a'

Hive doesn't consistently handle db qualified names across all HiveQL

by other project, do you mean projects in the Hive, or external projects? There
shouldn't be any problem for external projects. For internal projects, you can

currently ql module produces hive-exec-$version.jar which is an uber jar.
It's also useful to have a thin jar, let's call it
hive-exec-$version-core.jar, that only has classes from ql.

Overall looks good. I added a few comments regarding the Avro schema mapping.

It would also be useful to update the documentation
(https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/Hive/AvroSerDe) with to cover this
feature once it is released, especially the type mappings table.

The doc string here could be the Hive column definition, which would be
helpful for debugging.

serde/src/java/org/apache/hadoop/hive/serde2/avro/TypeInfoToSchema.java
https://reviews.apache.org/r/23387/#comment84121

VOID is missing - it maps to Schema.Type.NULL in Avro.

Also,

SHORT and BYTE could map to INT. And CHAR, VARCHAR could map to STRING.

serde/src/java/org/apache/hadoop/hive/serde2/avro/TypeInfoToSchema.java
https://reviews.apache.org/r/23387/#comment84123

Are optional fields supported properly? All schemas should probably be
wrapped in an Avro null union to allow values to be null:

private static Schema optional(Schema schema) {
  return Schema.createUnion(Arrays.asList(Schema.create(Schema.Type.NULL),
schema));
}

serde/src/java/org/apache/hadoop/hive/serde2/avro/TypeInfoToSchema.java
https://reviews.apache.org/r/23387/#comment84119

This should be BINARY. BYTE can be mapped to Avro Schema.Type.INT

Pass this as a parameter to getAvroSchemaString() - it's a bit odd to set

Add a field for each Hive type to test they can all work in the context of

I'm also curious why the {{explain}} commands in {{hbase_handler_snapshot.q}}
are not including the Input/OutputFormats.

[~sushanth], [~ashutoshc] any ideas on this latter issue?

HBASE-8369 provided mapreduce support for reading from HBase table snapsopts.
This allows a MR job to consume a stable, read-only view of an HBase table
directly off of HDFS. Bypassing the online region server API provides a nice
performance boost for the full scan. HBASE-10642 is backporting that feature
to 0.94/0.96 and also adding a {{mapred}} implementation. Once that's
available, we should add an input format. A follow-on patch could work out
how to integrate this functionality into the StorageHandler, similar to how
HIVE-6473 integrates the HFileOutputFormat into existing table definitions.

[jira] [Created] (HIVE-7428) OrcSplit fails to account for columnar projections in its size estimates

2014-07-16 Thread Gopal V (JIRA)
Gopal V created HIVE-7428:
-

Summary: OrcSplit fails to account for columnar projections in its
size estimates
 Key: HIVE-7428
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HIVE-7428
 Project: Hive
  Issue Type: Bug
Reporter: Gopal V

Currently, ORC generates splits based on stripe offset + stripe length.

This means that the splits for all columnar projections are exactly the same
size, despite reading the footer which gives the estimated sizes for each
column.

This is a hold-out from FileSplit which uses getLen() as the I/O cost of
reading a file in a map-task.

RCFile didn't have a footer with column statistics information, but for ORC
this would be extremely useful to reduce task overheads when processing
extremely wide tables with highly selective column projections.

Are optional fields supported properly? All schemas should probably be
wrapped in an Avro null union to allow values to be null:

  private static Schema optional(Schema schema) {
return
  Schema.createUnion(Arrays.asList(Schema.create(Schema.Type.NULL), schema));
  }

Tom, could you elaborate on Are optional fields supported properly?. I am in

[~thejas] The patch look fine to me.
Just wondering if it would make sense to further split the metastore config
into client (or base) and server. There are common configs like setugi,
enableSasl etc that need to be in sync on both client and server. If those are
available in a common file, it will be less prone to incompatible configs. The
server will load both base and server specific configs, the client will only
load the base config.

There is currently a single configuration file for all components in hive.
ie, components such as hive cli, hiveserver2 and metastore all read from the
 same hive-site.xml.
It will be useful to have a server specific hive-site.xml, so that you can
have some different configuration value set for a server. For example, you
might want to enabled authorization checks for hiveserver2, while disabling
the checks for hive cli. The workaround today is to add any component
specific configuration as a commandline (-hiveconf) argument.
Using server specific config files (eg hiveserver2-site.xml,
hivemetastore-site.xml) that override the entries in hive-site.xml will make
the configuration much more easy to manage.

hive-site.xml is the base config file. It gets loaded by clients and servers.

[jira] [Updated] (HIVE-7342) support hiveserver2,metastore specific config files

2014-07-16 Thread Thejas M Nair (JIRA)

 [
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HIVE-7342?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:all-tabpanel

Thejas M Nair updated HIVE-7342:

Release Note:
Adds support for server specific config files.

HiveMetastore server reads hive-site.xml as well as hivemetastore-site.xml
configuration files that are available in the $HIVE_CONF_DIR or in the
classpath. If metastore is being used in embedded mode (ie hive.metastore.uris
is not set or empty) in hive commandline or hiveserver2, the
hivemetastore-site.xml gets loaded by the parent process as well.
The value of hive.metastore.uris is examined to determine this, and the value
should be set appropriately in hive-site.xml .
Certain metastore configuration parameters like hive.metastore.sasl.enabled,
hive.metastore.kerberos.principal, hive.metastore.execute.setugi,
hive.metastore.thrift.framed.transport.enabled are used by the metastore client
as well as server. For such common parameters it is better to set the values in
hive-site.xml, that will help in keeping them consistent.

HiveServer2 reads hive-site.xml as well as hiveserver2-site.xml that are
available in the $HIVE_CONF_DIR or in the classpath.
If hiveserver2 is using metastore in embedded mode, hivemetastore-site.xml also
is loaded.

The order of precedence of the config files is as follows (later one has higher
precedence) -
hive-site.xml - hivemetastore-site.xml - hiveserver2-site.xml - '-hiveconf'
commandline parameters

  was:

The order of precedence of the config files is as follows (later one has higher
precedence) -
hive-site.xml - hivemetastore-site.xml - hiveserver2-site.xml - '-hiveconf'
commandline parameters

 support hiveserver2,metastore specific config files

 Key: HIVE-7342
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HIVE-7342
 Project: Hive
  Issue Type: Bug
  Components: Configuration, HiveServer2, Metastore
Reporter: Thejas M Nair
Assignee: Thejas M Nair
 Attachments: HIVE-7342.1.patch, HIVE-7342.2.patch

There is currently a single configuration file for all components in hive.
ie, components such as hive cli, hiveserver2 and metastore all read from the
 same hive-site.xml.
It will be useful to have a server specific hive-site.xml, so that you can
have some different configuration value set for a server. For example, you
might want to enabled authorization checks for hiveserver2, while disabling
the checks for hive cli. The workaround today is to add any component
specific configuration as a commandline (-hiveconf) argument.
Using server specific config files (eg hiveserver2-site.xml,
hivemetastore-site.xml) that override the entries in hive-site.xml will make
the configuration much more easy to manage.

bq. I wonder if we shouldn't put generation of the template file in a profile
and make it part of the release process to ensure its up to date.

I think having a hive-default.xml in trunk that is in sync with HiveConf.java
is useful. We can resort to the profile approach as a workaround if we keep
hitting into issues of spurious updates to it.

Summary: Set replication for archive called before file exists

  Issue Type: Bug
Affects Versions: 0.13.1, 0.13.0, 0.12.0, 0.11.0, 0.14.0
Reporter: Daniel Weeks
Priority: Critical

The call to set replication is called prior to uploading the archive file to
hdfs, which does not throw an error, but the replication never gets set.

This has a significant impact on large jobs (especially hash joins) due to too
many tasks hitting the data nodes.

I guess treating hive-site as base file should be sufficient. It's unlikely
that you will have variety of metastore setups (embedded and remote, or secure
and unsecure) in a single deployment. Thanks for updating the release notes!

 Key: HIVE-7342

  Issue Type: Bug
  Components: Configuration, HiveServer2, Metastore
Reporter: Thejas M Nair
Assignee: Thejas M Nair
 Attachments: HIVE-7342.1.patch, HIVE-7342.2.patch

There is currently a single configuration file for all components in hive.
ie, components such as hive cli, hiveserver2 and metastore all read from the
 same hive-site.xml.
It will be useful to have a server specific hive-site.xml, so that you can
have some different configuration value set for a server. For example, you
might want to enabled authorization checks for hiveserver2, while disabling
the checks for hive cli. The workaround today is to add any component
specific configuration as a commandline (-hiveconf) argument.
Using server specific config files (eg hiveserver2-site.xml,
hivemetastore-site.xml) that override the entries in hive-site.xml will make
the configuration much more easy to manage.

 ---

 Key: HIVE-6560
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HIVE-6560
 Project: Hive
  Issue Type: Bug
  Components: Types, UDF
Affects Versions: 0.12.0, 0.13.0, 0.13.1
Reporter: Xuefu Zhang
Assignee: Chao
 Attachments: HIVE-6560.1.patch, HIVE-6560.2.patch, HIVE-6560.3.patch

GenericUDFToBinary can convert string to binary. VARCHAR and CHAR are
substitutable with string. Thus, GenericUDFToBinary should also be able to
convert VARCHAR and CHAR to binary. However,
 {code}
 hive select binary(cast('abc' as varchar(5)) from decimal_udf limit 1;
FAILED: ParseException line 1:40 missing ) at 'from' near 'EOF'
 hive select binary(cast('abc' as varchar(5))) from decimal_udf limit 1;
FAILED: SemanticException Line 0:-1 Wrong arguments ''abc'': Only string or
binary data can be cast into binary data types.
 {code}

When I run {{mvn clean test -Phadoop-1|2}}, none of the unit tests are run. I
did a binary search through the commit logs and found that the change that
caused the unit tests to be disabled was the the change to the root pom.xml
in the patch for HIVE-7067 (e77f38dc44de5a9b10bce8e0a2f1f5452f6921ed).
Removing that change allowed the unit tests to be run again.

Archive Replication Issue HIVE-7429

2014-07-16 Thread Daniel Weeks
I was wondering if someone could quickly review the patch below. It's
trivial and is just fixing a order of execution problem when uploading the
archive file to hdfs and setting the replication factor (replication is set
before archive is uploaded).

 Project: Hive

  Components: Configuration, HiveServer2, Metastore
Reporter: Thejas M Nair
Assignee: Thejas M Nair
 Fix For: 0.14.0

The call to set replication is called prior to uploading the archive file to

This has a significant impact on large jobs (especially hash joins) due to
too many tasks hitting the data nodes.

Hi Xuefu, I was wrong about Spark not using Guava 12+. It does now. I posted an
update on the Spark JIRA. That makes it somewhat harder to downgrade, although
not much. I would not characterize it as not being taken seriously. There are
legitimate questions here, like why Hadoop can't get off of Guava 11, which is
about 2.5 years old now. It was very helpful to link the Spark JIRA to this
one, which has the details.

hadoop-hdfs and hadoop-comman have dependency on guava-11.0.2.jar, and spark
dependent on guava-14.0.1.jar. guava-11.0.2 has API conflict with
guava-14.0.1, as Hive CLI load both dependency into classpath currently,
query failed on either spark engine or mr engine.

Re: Review Request 23425: HIVE-7361: using authorization api for RESET, DFS, ADD, DELETE, COMPILE commands

What does RESET do, just reset any config settings set via the SET
command? If SET is not currently being restricted, then maybe RESET should
  not either.

It also resets config setttings set using -hiveconf commandline parameter.
But looks like that happens only with hive cli and not HS2. So it would be safe
to allow reset.

Should DeleteResourceProcessor also be updated to use the auth check?

Good catch!

The only way to disable the commands SET, RESET, DFS, ADD, DELETE and COMPILE
that is available currently is to use the hive.security.command.whitelist
 parameter.
Some of these commands are disabled using this configuration parameter for
security reasons when SQL standard authorization is enabled. However, it gets
 disabled in all cases.
If authorization api is used authorize the use of these commands, it will
give authorization implementations the flexibility to allow/disallow these
 commands based on user privileges.

Context information such as request ip address, unique string for session,
and original sql command string are useful for audit logging from the
 authorization implementations.
Authorization implementations can also choose to log authorization success
along with information about what policies matched and the context
 information.

Context information such as request ip address, unique string for session,
and original sql command string are useful for audit logging from the
 authorization implementations.
Authorization implementations can also choose to log authorization success
along with information about what policies matched and the context
 information.

trivial and is just fixing a order of execution problem when uploading the

 before archive is uploaded).

Looks like authorization_dfs.q no longer requires an initial query to

still have one. Should it be removed from those q files?

currently ql module produces hive-exec-$version.jar which is an uber jar.
It's also useful to have a thin jar, let's call it
hive-exec-$version-core.jar, that only has classes from ql.

 [JDK-7122142|https://bugs.openjdk.java.net/browse/JDK-7122142] mentions that
there is a race condition in getAnnotations. This problem can lead deadlock.
The fix on JDK will be merged on jdk8, but hive supports jdk6/jdk7 currently.
