The repo on github is only a mirror so we'll not able to merge patches
from there, but recently we added integration testing via Travis so
pull requests can be automatically tested on multiple platforms.
Having a pull request in github seems fine, maybe the best path would
be to open a bugzilla task explaining the problem etc.. and
referencing any github pull requests in there (as opposed to attach
the patch directly for example).
