Re: [VOTE] Make next Kafka release 0.10.0.0 instead of 0.9.1.0

2016-02-24 Thread Becket Qin
Thanks a lot for help out, Ismael. I was wondering why you changed some of
the fix version back to 0.9.1.0 and now I understand.

Thanks,

Re: [VOTE] Make next Kafka release 0.10.0.0 instead of 0.9.1.0

2016-02-23 Thread Ismael Juma
I also changed the "Fix version" for a number of recent JIRAs from 0.10.0.0
to 0.9.1.0. The reason is that once we rename the JIRA versions (as per
KAFKA-3276), they will all automatically become 0.10.0.0 (without causing a
storm of notifications).

Re: [VOTE] Make next Kafka release 0.10.0.0 instead of 0.9.1.0

2016-02-23 Thread Ismael Juma
Thank you Becket. I have:

* Updated KIP wiki page so that all KIPs with a target of 0.9.1.0 now
target 0.10.0.0
* Filed https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/KAFKA-3275 to track tasks
that still need to be done. The next step would be to update JIRA versions
as per https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/KAFKA-3276 (we need a
committer to do this, I believe).

Re: [VOTE] Make next Kafka release 0.10.0.0 instead of 0.9.1.0

2016-02-19 Thread Becket Qin
Hi Grant,

Thanks for bringing up the compatibility and feature discussion.

Ismael had similar concern about the short release interval between 0.9.0.0
and 0.10.0.0.

>From wire protocol perspective, the old clients should still work well with
the brokers in 0.10.0.0. So it is backward compatible. However, from
programming interface perspective, there might be some backward
incompatible changes on client side in order to enable new features. I
agree we should try to avoid those changes as much as possible.

Feature wise, I believe rack awareness is also something ranking high on
the wishlist.

After all, given all the new features we have already had, I think 0.10.0.0
is a justifiable major release.

Thanks,

Jiangjie (Becket) Qin

I agree with Grant on getting KIP-4 into this release if it's possible.
There are a lot of tools which depend on it.

Re: [VOTE] Make next Kafka release 0.10.0.0 instead of 0.9.1.0

+1 (non-binding) In general I am for this, but wanted to discuss a few
things:

*Compatibility*

Given the (theoretically) short time period between this release and 0.9. I
suggest we make this release as compatible as possible. Especially from the
client perspective. Other open source projects (Spark, Flume, etc) are
working on migrating from 0.8 and because they want to support users on 0.8
and 0.9 at the same time, that is proving challenging. Adding another
incompatible client change could complicate the usage of Kafka further.
This is true for third party open source clients as well (Python, Go, etc).
Perhaps making sure KIP-35 (Retrieving protocol version) makes it into this
release would help avoid similar challenges going forward as well.

*Features*

Along with the features already included in trunk, below is a wish list of
features for the next release. I have included reasons why I think its
important to include them but generally speaking I think waiting for these
features before another major release would be valuable.

   - KIP-45 - Standardize all client sequence interaction on j.u.Collection.
   - Compatibility
   - KIP-4 - Command line and centralized administrative operations
   - Wire protocol changes/compatibility
  - Improved security story
  - I am working on this with my full attention and should be able to
finish within a reasonable amount of time given active reviews
and feedback
   - KIP-35 - Retrieving protocol version
   - Allow clients and frameworks to better support multiple versions
  - Happy to help with this after KIP-4 as this functionality may be
  included in the AdminClient
   - KIP-33 - Add a time based log index
   - A key feature enabled by the format changes in KIP-31/32

Thanks,
Grant

[VOTE] Make next Kafka release 0.10.0.0 instead of 0.9.1.0

2016-02-19 Thread Becket Qin
Hi All,

We would like to start this voting thread on making next Kafka release
0.10.0.0 instead of 0.9.1.0.

The next Kafka release will have several significant important new
features/changes such as Kafka Stream, Message Format Change, Client
Interceptors and several new consumer API changes, etc. We feel it is
better to make next Kafka release 0.10.0.0 instead of 0.9.1.0.

Some previous discussions are in the following thread.

Thanks,
