Uwe Schindler commented on LUCENE-6989:
---

I tested with the official b150 download (not yet public visible), so I
backported the commits to branch_6x.

I cannot install build 150 yet on Jenkins, because the other 2 issues have to
be solved. Currently I am working on RAMUsageTester. Also, a Groovy update was
not yet released.

bq. For solr I have no idea. I would hope that using IdentityHashMap is no more
needed because queries are immutable.

Maybe Solr should also switch to ContextMap then?

Maybe I miss something but I don't think it would help, since the problem is
that points are ordered by value while our iterators need to be ordered by doc
id. So you cannot check whether a particular doc id matches the query, this is
why we build those large bit sets up front.

> In Lucene 5.0, we improved the execution path for queries that run costly
> operations on a per-document basis, like phrase queries or doc values
> queries. But we have another class of costly queries, that return fine
> iterators, but these iterators are very expensive to build. This is typically
> the case for queries that leverage DocIdSetBuilder, like TermsQuery,
> multi-term queries or the new point queries. Intersecting such queries with a
> selective query is very inefficient since these queries build a doc id set of
> matching documents for the entire index.
> Is there something we could do to improve the execution path for these
> queries?
> One idea that comes to mind is that most of these queries could also run on
> doc values, so maybe we could come up with something that would help decide
> how to run a query based on other parts of the query? (Just thinking out
> loud, other ideas are very welcome)

> SolrEntityProcessor paginates using the start and rows parameters which can
> be very inefficient at large offsets. In fact, the current implementation is
> impracticable to import large amounts of data (10M+ documents) because the
> data import rate degrades from 1000docs/second to 10docs/second and the
> import gets stuck.
> This patch introduces support for cursor paging which offers more or less
> predictable performance. In my tests the time to fetch the 1st and 1000th
> pages was about the same and the data import rate was stable throughout the
> entire import.
> To enable cursor paging a user needs to add a "sort" attribute in the entity
> configuration:
> {code}
>
>
>
>  query="*:*"
> rows="1000"
> sort="id asc"
> url="http://localhost:8983/solr/collection1;>
>
>
>
> {code}
> If the "sort" attribute is missing then the default start/rows pagination is
> used.

Description:
If subquery collection has a different unique key field name (let's say
{{foo_id}} is different to {{id}} in primary collection), you've got
{{NullPoniterException}} from {{QueryComponent.mergeIds()}}. To accommodate the
difference between uniqueKey field names between collections, add the following
parameters {{foo.fl=id:foo_id=true}}. The former one
renames uniqueKey field, the later switches to single pass search. There is no
way to rename field in default processing.
In a rare case when a collection under subquery has no unqueKey at all, it
leads to something like

  was:
h2.UPD
The sentences below seems not really actual. The more objective synopsis is
described in the first comment. It seems like fl=foo:\[subquery]=bar
can be fixed just by declaring fields in schema.

h3. Old description

straightforward \[subquery] implementation executes requests on a caller
collection, but just hitting another one with
{{caller/select?q=..=callee}}. The problem is that for
{{GET_FIELDS}} it uses uniqKey from a caller collection but not a callee one.
Another observation, at that case both single sharded collections are
collocated at the same instance. Then, subquery can't be parsed if it queries a
field which are absent in caller schema. All of this seems pretty strange like
hitting an edge case.

h2. workaround
Perhaps you can collocate secondary index and call it {{fromIndex=callee}}.
Or you can name uniqKey the same, keeping the different app semantic.

With both patches applied, ant clean compile-test gives a single warning.

Perhaps ContextMap should be separate issue.

For lucene I think it is worthwhile to use a lucene class without generics as
the context map instead of the Map variations that are present in the
current code.

For solr I have no idea. I would hope that using IdentityHashMap is no more
needed because queries are immutable.

The lucene patch replaces the use of IdentityHashMap in ValueSource.java by a
ContextMap, because I think it is wrong to use an IdentityHashMap there.
Strings are used as keys, and Strings are not unique objects in java.

However, this conflicts somewhat with the way ContextMap is used in solr. There
QueryContext needs an IdentityHashMap, but the solr tests pass even with the
patch applied.

The interesting pieces of code for ContextMap:

The class itself:
{code}
public class ContextMap extends HashMap {
  public ContextMap() { // empty
  }

  public ContextMap(ContextMap source) { // new copy
super(source);
  }

  public ContextMap(IdentityHashMap source) { // for solr
super(source);
  }
}
{code}

the way it is used in solr, in SlotAcc.java:
{code}
class SolrContextMap extends ContextMap {
  SolrContextMap(org.apache.solr.search.QueryContext context) {
super((java.util.IdentityHashMap)context); // CHECKME: copy ok?
  }
}

// TODO: we should really have a decoupled value provider...
// This would enhance reuse and also prevent multiple lookups of same value
across diff stats
abstract class FuncSlotAcc extends SlotAcc {
  protected final ValueSource valueSource;
  protected FunctionValues values;

  public FuncSlotAcc(ValueSource values, FacetContext fcontext, int numSlots) {
super(fcontext);
this.valueSource = values;
  }

  @Override
  public void setNextReader(LeafReaderContext readerContext) throws IOException
{
values = valueSource.getValues(new SolrContextMap(fcontext.qcontext),
readerContext);
  }
}
{code}

and some unchanged code from solr's QueryContext.java:
{code}
/*
 * Bridge between old style context and a real class.
 * This is currently slightly more heavy weight than necessary because of the
need to inherit from IdentityHashMap rather than
 * instantiate it on demand (and the need to put "searcher" in the map)
 * @lucene.experimental
 */
public class QueryContext extends IdentityHashMap implements Closeable {
   ...
}
{code}
