[jira] [Commented] (SOLR-10548) hyper-log-log based numBuckets for faceting

Otis Gospodnetic commented on SOLR-10548:
-

A new paper published in January introduced a new cardinality estimation
algorithm called LogLog-Beta/β:

https://arxiv.org/abs/1612.02284

"The new algorithm uses only one formula and needs no additional bias
corrections for the entire range of cardinalities, therefore, it is more
efficient and simpler to implement. Our simulations show that the accuracy
provided by the new algorithm is as good as or better than the accuracy
provided by either of HyperLogLog or HyperLogLog++."
Some comments about its accuracy (graphs included) can be found in this PR:
https://github.com/antirez/redis/pull/3677

> numBuckets currently uses an estimate (same as the unique function detailed
> at http://yonik.com/solr-count-distinct/ ). We should either change
> implementations or introduce a way to optionally select a hyper-log-log based
> approach for a better estimate with high field cardinalities.

[jira] [Updated] (SOLR-10552) numBuckets is not consistent between distrib and non-distrib requests

Affects Version/s: 5.1

> Key: SOLR-10552
> URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-10552
> Project: Solr
>  Issue Type: Bug
> Security Level: Public(Default Security Level. Issues are Public)
>Affects Versions: 5.1
>Reporter: Yonik Seeley
>
> The main problem is mincount... in a non-distrib query, numBuckets reflects
> the number of buckets that are screened out after mincount is applied. In
> distributed mode, we can't do this (or rather, the only way to do it would be
> to tramsmit all bucket counts to an aggregator node).
> We should perhaps just make numBuckets always pre-mincount to be consistent,
> and use hyper-log-log by default?

> {{ScoreJoinQParserPlugin.XxxCoreJoinQuery}} executes
> {{JoinUtil.createJoinQuery}} on {{rewrite()}}, but it's inefficient in
> {{filter(...)}} syntax -or fq- (!) I suppose it's {{filter()}} only problem,
> not fq. It's better to do that in {{createWeigh()}} as it's done in classic
> Solr {{JoinQuery}}, {{JoinQParserPlugin}}.
> All existing tests is enough, we just need to assert rewrite behavior - it
> should rewrite on enclosing range query or so, and doesn't on plain term
> query.

[jira] [Comment Edited] (LUCENE-7796) Make reThrow idiom declare RuntimeException return type so callers may use it in a way that compiler knows subsequent code is unreachable

bq. It is based on JVM spec knowledge, not Java spec and it can lead to
surprising code paths.

That's not true. It is misuse, but behavior is still expected. The same happens
if you change a method to suddenly throw a checked Exception. Code compiled
against old signature leads to no runtime or linkage errors. But it can still
be surprising, because the code may throw a checked exception unexpected.

BTW: We have more rethrows in the expressions module. And there - please don't
remove, it would break the expressions compiler. The reason why its there is:
The ANTLR API needs to implement an interface that does not allow checked
exceptions. But the code inside this interface needs to throw ParseExceptions,
which are checked. So we need the rethrow hack... But the code is also safe, as
the outer method declares the ParseException, so code calling the public
compiler API will only see declared Exceptions:
https://github.com/apache/lucene-solr/blob/master/lucene/expressions/src/java/org/apache/lucene/expressions/js/JavascriptCompiler.java#L298-L301,
 but code that calls the visitor declares the ParseException:
https://github.com/apache/lucene-solr/blob/master/lucene/expressions/src/java/org/apache/lucene/expressions/js/JavascriptCompiler.java#L231

[jira] [Commented] (LUCENE-7800) Remove code that potentially rethrows checked exceptions from methods that don't declare them ("sneaky throw" hack)

Uwe Schindler commented on LUCENE-7800:
---

If you want to change the Snowball code, use {{throw new
AssertionError("Snowball programs don't throw checked Exceptions", e)}} instead
of RuntimeException. Then the comment is also obsolete. RuntimeException is too
general - its usage in "throw new" should be on forbiddenapis :-)

> For a long time I considered the "sneaky" throw hack to be a nice way of
> coding around some of Java's limitations (especially with invoking methods
> via reflection or method handles), but with time I started to see how it can
> be potentially dangerous and is nearly always confusing. If you have a Java
> method and its signature doesn't indicate the possibility of a checked
> exception you, as a programmer, simply don't expect it to happen. Never. So,
> for example, you could write:
> {code}
> try {
>  luceneApi();
> } catch (RuntimeException | Error e) {
> // Handle unchecked exceptions here.
> }
> {code}
> and consider the code above to be absolutely bullet-proof in terms of
> handling exceptions. Unfortunately with sneaky throws anywhere in the
> "luceneApi" this is no longer the case -- you can receive a checked exception
> that will simply fall through and hit some code frame above.
> So I suggest we remove sneaky throw from the core entirely. It only exists in
> two places -- private methods inside Snowball programs invoked via method
> handles (these don't even declare checked exceptions so I assume they can't
> occur) and AttributeFactory -- here there is a real possibility somebody
> could declare an attribute class's constructor that does throw an unchecked
> exception. In that case I think it is more reasonable to wrap it in a
> RuntimeException than rethrow it as original.
> Alternatively, we can modify the signature of {{createAttributeInstance}} and
> {{getStaticImplementation}} to declare some kind of checked exception (either
> a wrapper or even a Throwable), but I see little reason for it and it'd
> change the API.

[jira] [Created] (SOLR-10552) numBuckets is not consistent between distrib and non-distrib requests

2017-04-22 Thread Yonik Seeley (JIRA)
Yonik Seeley created SOLR-10552:
---

 Summary: numBuckets is not consistent between distrib and
non-distrib requests
 Key: SOLR-10552
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-10552
 Project: Solr
  Issue Type: Bug
  Security Level: Public (Default Security Level. Issues are Public)
Reporter: Yonik Seeley

The main problem is mincount... in a non-distrib query, numBuckets reflects the
number of buckets that are screened out after mincount is applied. In
distributed mode, we can't do this (or rather, the only way to do it would be
to tramsmit all bucket counts to an aggregator node).

We should perhaps just make numBuckets always pre-mincount to be consistent,
and use hyper-log-log by default?

[jira] [Comment Edited] (LUCENE-7796) Make reThrow idiom declare RuntimeException return type so callers may use it in a way that compiler knows subsequent code is unreachable

BTW: I have a better rethrow idiom that does not even need try..catch. Very
clear code and it clearly shows what happens when used in code. Source:

{code:java}
@FunctionalInterface
public interface Unchecked {

  R call() throws T;

  @SuppressWarnings("unchecked")
  static  R exec(Unchecked lambda) {
return ((Unchecked) lambda).call();
  }

}
{code}

Usage:

{code:java}
Something ret = Unchecked.exec(() -> {
  return doCrazyStuff();
});
{code}

This is looking like a try...catch, but it uses a Lambda trick with the same
sneaky throw trick, although it is very compact and easy to read. Code looks
very clean and you don't need any compiler hacks like proposed in this issue.
Only backside: Don't use it in inner loops or when you want to call
MethodHandles very fast, as it breaks inlining of MethodHandles. So it's a bad
idea for AttributeFactory or Snowball.

Sorry, SnowballProgram is not affected by generated code. The rethrow used
there is uncritical, because the code called cannot throw any checked
Exceptions.

The rethrow hack with MethodHandles is not against the type system. By using
MethodHandles you already left all strong typing behind...

[jira] [Commented] (LUCENE-7796) Make reThrow idiom declare RuntimeException return type so callers may use it in a way that compiler knows subsequent code is unreachable

bq. It is based on JVM spec knowledge, not Java spec and it can lead to
surprising code paths.

That's not true. It is misuse, but behavior is still expected. The same happens
if you change a method to suddenly throw a checked Exception. Code compiled
against old signature leads to now runtime errors. But it can still be
surprising. BTW. We have more rethrows in the expressions module. And there
please don't remove, it would break the compiler.

The IMHO correct fix is to disallow checked Exceptions when doing the
reflection on the ctor in the Attributefactory.

SnowballProgram is special. Please also patch the converter, as the generated
code is modified by regexes in the Ant script.

What's the reason to remove it in Attributefactory? The MethodHandles called
there are known to not throw unexpected Exceptions!
The problem is that MethodHandles declare throws Throwable, because the
Exceptions are unknown to compiler. The code knows, so it should preserve the
original ones.

-1 to remove it without a reason.

> Since SOLR-10521 {{ToParentBlockJoinSortField}} is going to be used as query

Mikhail Khludnev commented on SOLR-8762:

I'm afraid this format, where all children come after all parents will puzzle
users much. I suppose the format should mimic what we have in \[child] and
import formats, ie nesting children list as a field with a certain name eg
\_childrenDocuments_ .

[jira] [Updated] (LUCENE-7800) Remove code that potentially rethrows checked exceptions from methods that don't declare them ("sneaky throw" hack)

2017-04-22 Thread Dawid Weiss (JIRA)

 [
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LUCENE-7800?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:all-tabpanel
 ]

Dawid Weiss updated LUCENE-7800:

Description:
For a long time I considered the "sneaky" throw hack to be a nice way of coding
around some of Java's limitations (especially with invoking methods via
reflection or method handles), but with time I started to see how it can be
potentially dangerous and is nearly always confusing. If you have a Java method
and its signature doesn't indicate the possibility of a checked exception you,
as a programmer, simply don't expect it to happen. Never. So, for example, you
could write:
{code}
try {
 luceneApi();
} catch (RuntimeException | Error e) {
  // Handle unchecked exceptions here.
}
{code}
and consider the code above to be absolutely bullet-proof in terms of handling
exceptions. Unfortunately with sneaky throws anywhere in the "luceneApi" this
is no longer the case -- you can receive a checked exception that will simply
fall through and hit some code frame above.

So I suggest we remove sneaky throw from the core entirely. It only exists in
two places -- private methods inside Snowball programs invoked via method
handles (these don't even declare checked exceptions so I assume they can't
occur) and AttributeFactory -- here there is a real possibility somebody could
declare an attribute class's constructor that does throw an unchecked
exception. In that case I think it is more reasonable to wrap it in a
RuntimeException than rethrow it as original.

Alternatively, we can modify the signature of {{createAttributeInstance}} and
{{getStaticImplementation}} to declare some kind of checked exception (either a
wrapper or even a Throwable), but I see little reason for it and it'd change
the API.

I agree: the rethrow-checked hack is essentially an abuse of the type erasure
system. It is based on JVM spec knowledge, not Java spec and it can lead to
surprising code paths.

I'll file a separate issue to remove sneaky throws from the core codebase.

bq. wait ... am i missing something? aren't those 2 impls identical?

They are (now); I think it's a remnant from times when they weren't.

> A spinoff from LUCENE-7792: reThrow can be declared to return an unchecked
> exception so that callers can choose to use {{throw reThrow(...)}} as an
> idiom to let the compiler know any subsequent code will be unreachable.

[jira] [Commented] (LUCENE-7792) Add optional concurrency to OfflineSorter

Dawid Weiss commented on LUCENE-7792:

Looks good to me. I'd be picky with naming and change two things:
{code}
 +  private ExecutorService randomExecutorService() {
{code}
to {{randomExecutorServiceOrNull}} -- hey, you're the one appending Ms or Nanos
suffix for clarity! :)

The second thing is to me {{SameThreadExecutorService}} is more understandable
than {{DirectExecutorService}}, but maybe it's because I'm not a native speaker
and need things to be more in your face.

Up to you on both.

> OfflineSorter is a heavy operation and is really an embarrassingly concurrent
> problem at heart, and if you have enough hardware concurrency (e.g. fast
> SSDs, multiple CPU cores) it can be a big speedup.
> E.g., after reading a partition from the input, one thread can sort and write
> it, while another thread reads the next partition, etc. Merging partitions
> can also be done in the background. Some things still cannot be concurrent,
> e.g. the initial read from the input must be a single thread, as well as the
> final merge and writing to the final output.
> I think I found a fairly non-invasive way to add optional concurrency to this
> class, by adding an optional ExecutorService to OfflineSorter's ctor (similar
> to IndexSearcher) and using futures to represent each partition as we sort,
> and creating Callable classes for sorting and merging partitions.

Michael McCandless commented on LUCENE-7797:

Indeed, the logic is backwards now. I was wondering how Lucene could possible
be working, since {{listAll}} is used when opening a non-near-real-time
{{DirectoryReader}}, but then I realized it's only the static
{{FSDirectory.listAll(Path)}} that tickles this bug since the non-static
version always passes {{pendingDeletes}}.

Thank you for the patch w/ test case [~atkinschang] ... I'll push soon.

> On released 6.5.0 version, flushing operation on sorted index throws
> ArrayIndexOutOfBoudException in NumericDocValuesWriter, NormValuesWriter and
> BinaryDocValuesWriter.
> New SortedXXXIterators are looking up documents in FixedBitSets or
> PackedValues based on remapped (sorted) document ID, without checking
> BitSets/Values ranges, which are based on original document IDs. Meanwhile
> FixedBitSets can be sparse not only in between documents with fields, but
> also after last (originally) document with given field (because writer's
> addValue() is not called for last documents without values for fields). So
> remapped (sorted) values range can have different useful values range and
> bounds checking should be done for remapped and not original ID.
> We were hit by this bug because our indexes are built from independent
> sources by partial updating fragments of documents, so there is always some
> documents without values in some fields.
> As I understand this bug, it shows when:
> - maxDoc is greater than 64 (64 is pre-allocated size for writers
> FixedBitSets)
> - some number of last taken documents have empty fields (so FixedBitSet won't
> be reallocated to maxDoc)
> Also, check for range of values for given field is now happening based on
> original ID (e.g. "upto < size"), so flushing can now lost some values, even
> without hitting AIOOBE.

> from LUCENE-7579, I am not sure if there are similar bugs in them; patch
