Jan Høydahl commented on SOLR-12809:

Put up your proposed patch for review and we can take it from there. You should
at minimum remove our current Oracle recommendation and mention that both free
and paid options exist.

> JDK 8 will be EOL early next year (except for "premier support"). JDK 9, 10
> and 11 all have issues for Solr and Lucene IIUC.
> Also IIUC Oracle will start requiring commercial licenses for 11.
> This Jira is to discuss what we want to do going forward. Among the topics:
> * Skip straight to 11, skipping 9 and 10? If so how to resolve current
> issues?
> * How much emphasis on OpenJDK .vs. Oracle's version
> * What to do about dependencies that don't work (for whatever reason) with
> the version of Java we go with?
>  * ???
> This may turn into an umbrella Jira with sub-tasks of course. Since JDK 11
> has had a GA release, I'd also like to have a record of where the current
> issues are to refer people to.

[jira] [Commented] (SOLR-13344) Admin UI inaccessible with RuleBasedAuthorizationPlugin

Jan Høydahl commented on SOLR-13344:

For sure we have special handling for admin, see
[https://github.com/apache/lucene-solr/blob/6222abf4480ee15bad2e67942263f563ce5ee434/solr/core/src/java/org/apache/solr/servlet/SolrDispatchFilter.java#L468]
 but that is only for auth. What we lacked is the same exception for authz. See
[GitHub Pull Request #630|https://github.com/apache/lucene-solr/pull/630] for a
simple fix.

Perhaps it could have been handled another place in the code, but this is
exactly how it is done to expose /admin/info/key.

Appreciate your review [~gerlowskija]. I have tested locally and with the patch
the Admin loads and presents the login dialogue.

[jira] [Updated] (SOLR-13344) Admin UI inaccessible with RuleBasedAuthorizationPlugin

Jan Høydahl updated SOLR-13344:
---
Fix Version/s: 8.1

> Admin UI inaccessible with RuleBasedAuthorizationPlugin
> ---
>
> Key: SOLR-13344
> URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-13344
> Project: Solr
>  Issue Type: Bug
> Security Level: Public(Default Security Level. Issues are Public)
>  Components: Admin UI, Authentication
>Affects Versions: 7.7, 8.0
>Reporter: Märt
>Assignee: Jan Høydahl
>Priority: Major
> Fix For: 8.1
>
>  Time Spent: 10m
>  Remaining Estimate: 0h
>
> SOLR-7896 made some changes to the admin ui login. After the changes I can no
> longer log in at all.
> I'm running standalone solr 7.7 (same with 8.0) with the following
> security.json:
> {code}
> {
>   "authentication": {
> "class": "solr.BasicAuthPlugin",
> "blockUnknown": true,
> "credentials": {
>   "solr": "IV0EHq1OnNrj6gvRCwvFwTrZ1+z1oBbnQdiVC3otuq0=
> Ndd7LKvVBAaZIF0QAVi1ekCfAJXr1GGfLtRUXhgrF8c="
> },
>   },
>   "authorization": {
> "class": "solr.RuleBasedAuthorizationPlugin",
> "permissions": [
>   {
> "name": "all",
> "role": "admin"
>   }
> ],
> "user-role": {
>   "solr": "admin"
> }
>   }
> }
> {code}
> Opening the UI at http://localhost:8080/solr/ shows an error page with 401.
> The login page is not displayed because of the "all" permission being
> required. The browser's basic auth popup is not shown because the
> WWW-Authenticate header is not present. Changing the
> RuleBasedAuthorizationPlugin required permission from "all" to
> "security-edit" makes the login page appear.
> The bug can be reproduced as follows:
> # unpack solr-8.0.0.zip
> # copy the security.json example from
> https://lucene.apache.org/solr/guide/7_7/basic-authentication-plugin.html
> into server/solr/ and replace "name":"security-edit" with "name":"all"
> # start with bin/solr -f -p 8080
> # open http://localhost:8080/
> The bug was discussed on solr-user list
> http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/lucene-solr-user/201903.mbox/%3C7629BDDD-3D22-4203-9188-0E0A8DCF2FEE%40cominvent.com%3E

I'm calling this minor as I don't believe we officially support Java 9 (but

Several issues/notes:

 # javadoc plugin breaks if you try to do mvn javadoc:jar
 # warnings from groovy-maven-plugin (TODO)
 # a lot of the maven plugins are quite old
 # forbiddenapis has some issues with Solr (I assume due to module split-up,
javax is no longer part of core) (TODO)

I have patches for 1, 2, and 4. Still working on 3 and 5.

[~erickerickson], I still have a few local branches, which I keep up to date
with master, I'll try to re-create the patches.  I don't use Java 9 any more,
bu I'll test with what I have which is:

openjdk version "10.0.2" 2018-07-17
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 10.0.2+13-Ubuntu-1ubuntu0.18.04.4)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 10.0.2+13-Ubuntu-1ubuntu0.18.04.4, mixed mode)

which is the latest "official" package on Ubuntu.  Give me a few days to try
and find some time to do that and I'll update this accordingly.

Kevin Risden commented on SOLR-13359:

So while looking at this, I wonder if this hardcoded default for hdfs:// is the
reason that indexing on HDFS is slow. There are a few examples linked to
SOLR-7393. I have no idea how efficient HdfsUpdateLog is, but would be good to
track down potentially.

This opens up the possibilities of using any HDFS compatible filesystem for
storing indices. There are no Solr tests for other filesystems (besides local
disk and HDFS) so you would need to test before using.

> The problem I'm facing here is with autoAddReplicas. If I have

>   }{code}
> If I add "alluxio:/" in there, the paths are correct and the index is

> I see a few options here:
> * add "alluxio:/" to the list there
> * add a regular expression in the lines of \[a-z]*:/ I hope that's not too
> expensive, I'm not sure how often this method is called
> * don't do anything and expect alluxio to work with an "hdfs:/" path? I
> actually tried that and didn't manage to make it work
> * have a different DirectoryFactory or something else?
> What do you think?

why this Improvement is not commit in lucene 7.x and 8.x?
 Is there some negative impact for lucene?

> For both NUMERIC fields and ordinals of SORTED fields, we store data in a
> dense way. As a consequence, if you have only 1000 documents out of 1B that
> have a value, and 8 bits are required to store those 1000 numbers, we will
> not require 1KB of storage, but 1GB.
> I suspect this mostly happens in abuse cases, but still it's a pity that we
> explode storage requirements. We could try to detect sparsity and compress
> accordingly.

> expensive, I'm not sure how often this method is called
> * don't do anything and expect alluxio to work with an "hdfs:/" path? I

Tomoko Uchida commented on LUCENE-2562:
---

Hi,
 I updated the patch so that the dependency on {{reflections}} is removed.
Instead, its own jar files scanner {{o.a.l.luke.util.reflection.ClassScanner}}
has been added to make Luke work as before. Also transitive dependencies (Guava
etc.) were removed.
 Please check them when you have time.

> I think it would be great if there was a version of Luke that always worked
> with trunk - and it would also be great if it was easier to match Luke jars
> with Lucene versions.
> While I'd like to get GWT Luke into the mix as well, I think the easiest
> starting point is to straight port Luke to another UI toolkit before
> abstracting out DTO objects that both GWT Luke and Pivot Luke could share.
> I've started slowly converting Luke's use of thinlet to Apache Pivot. I
> haven't/don't have a lot of time for this at the moment, but I've plugged
> away here and there over the past work or two. There is still a *lot* to do.
