I'll see what I can do about getting the buildSrc .project to somehow import anyway - it's very nice to have that java and groovy code as a project in eclipse on import. [jira] [Commented] (SOLR-12697) pure DocValues support for FieldValueFeature

I confess I didn't dive into the entire process, on a quick review it caught my eye 'cause it looked a bit like fetching the stored doc in a collector, which is an anti-pattern. Also making it not as bad is that aside from the documentCache, the page containing the compressed data will probably be in memory even if it's accessed multiple times. The decompression set would cause extra work in that case. I'm not quite sure how the documentCache would be populated, and don't have time right now to check whether it's part of this workflow or need an explicit call. Just a cautionary note for you to check that this code would insert the doc in the cache if you're expecting it to be used. > pure DocValues support for FieldValueFeature > > > Key: SOLR-12697 > URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-12697 > Project: Solr > Issue Type: Sub-task > Security Level: Public(Default Security Level. I agree with all your concerns, and that's why we had used to docValues to optimize model reading and consequently, that's why this Jira was opened. However: # All fieldValue features are by the flow isolated from each other, so there is no possibility to gather all required fields and then fetch them from the stored document fields. # From my POV we can not cut the part related to reading values from stored document cause initially, it was the only supported way. It will be not backward compatible change, and I don't think that it is a good idea. Moreover, I can even imagine some cases when loading from stored fields can work with the same time or even work faster(In case of documentCache enabled with enableLazyFieldLoading=false and when only required fields are stored). So probably in some cases, it is not so bad idea. But probably we need to explicitly mention it in the LTR documentation or at least in javaDoc? > pure DocValues support for FieldValueFeature > > > Key: SOLR-12697 > URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-12697 > Project: Solr > Issue Type: Sub-task > Security Level: Public(Default Security Level. With the previous code, because we created {{new BytesRef}} or {{new String}} there was some implicit null checks. So I am just thinking, rather than assign the String/BytesRef directly with code such as {{stringValue = value}} it might need {{stringValue = Objects.requireNonNull(value)}}. Otherwise a simple user mistake might give confusing exceptions or behavior, because it fails somewhere in low-level codecs code. With BytesRef as an incoming parameter its more complicated, user can also screw up its instance variables directly and pass bogus stuff. Adding lots of checks beyond a simple null check might be controversial. A good compromise can be to at least add an assert to help users with their tests, e.g. {{assert value.isValid()}} > Parameter changes for binaryField() and stringField() in StoredFieldVisitor > --- > > Key: LUCENE-8805 > URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LUCENE-8805 > Project: Lucene - Core > Issue Type: Improvement >Reporter: Namgyu Kim >Priority: Major > Attachments: LUCENE-8805.patch > > > I wrote this patch after seeing the comments left by [~mikemccand] when > SortingStoredFieldsConsumer class was first created. > {code:java} > @Override > public void binaryField(FieldInfo fieldInfo, byte[] value) throws IOException > { > ... > // TODO: can we avoid new BR here? > ... > } > @Override > public void stringField(FieldInfo fieldInfo, byte[] value) throws IOException > { > ... > // TODO: can we avoid new String here? > ... > } > {code} > I changed two things. > 1) change binaryField() parameters from byte[] to BytesRef. > 2) change stringField() parameters from byte[] to String. > I also changed the related contents while doing the work. -- This message was sent by Atlassian JIRA (v7.6.3#76005) - To unsubscribe, e-mail: dev-unsubscr...@lucene.apache.org For additional commands, e-mail: dev-h...@lucene.apache.org

[jira] [Commented] (SOLR-12697) pure DocValues support for FieldValueFeature
[ https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-12697?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=16843175#comment-16843175 ] Erick Erickson commented on SOLR-12697: --- {quote}do you mean that retrieving just 1 field from stored fields is not optimal {quote} Exactly. Unlike the rest of the data for the inverted index, stored data is kept on a per-document basis in a block. So all the stored=true fields for document Z are essentially concatenated together and written out to an "_##.fdt" file in a block. Then to retrieve even one stored (not docValues) field: 1> the stored data for the document is read from disk in one or more 16K block(s). 2> the block(s) of stored data is/are decompressed. 3> the stored value(s) is/are read from the decompressed block(s) At that point, it's more efficient to read the rest of the values from the stored fields if possible rather than bounce around the docValues fields. If all the docValues structures are in the OSs memory it's probably hard to measure, but there's always the possibility that to read the DV value some data will have to be read from disk 'cause they haven't been MMapped yet (or were swapped out or... It's an extra step anyway) So SolrDocumentFetcher tries to hide all that and "do the right thing". There are two cases: 1> all required fields can be returned from docValues fields. It does so without reading/decompressing the stored data 2> At least one required field must be fetched from the stored data. It reads/decompresses the stored data and adds all the required fields from the stored data it can to the solr document. If any required field is left over, it's added from docValues.
