Sure.  My main point was less about url vs zk-conn-string (I think either is 
fine...though there is prior art around the ZK_HOST setting).  My point was 
just that a solr.in.sh property fits well with how other similar things are 
done today.  Whether you add an explicit flag or not, users would probably 
expect this to be set-able in solr.in.sh.

bq. Ideally, we should minimize access to ZK from hosts outside of of solr 
nodes. It's a security hole.
Two things about this:
1. ZK has security mechanisms.  If you don't use those, then yes, it's a 
security hole.  But you can say the same thing about a Solr URL if Solr hasn't 
been secured.
2. I'd love for ZK to be a background detail we can hide from people, but right 
now I think it's a little unrealistic to try abstracting from clients, given 
how fundamental it is to Solr. ZK-conn-strings are stickier and more useful to 
use in cloud environments, where individual Solr nodes might join and leave a 
cluster frequently. etc

That said, I don't really have a dog in the conn-string vs url fight.  Just 
thinking aloud about pros/cons.  I think adding a flag/solr.in.sh option for 
either would be an improvement.

Ideally, we should minimize access to ZK from hosts outside of of solr nodes. 
It's a security hole. If you have access to ZK , you can edit the 
{{security.json}} or any other file in zookeeper. Most of these operations do 
not need access to ZK. 

We should make usage of solr as a service that runs over HTTP. If an operation 
can be performed over HTTP, it should be. People should just be required to 
know the url of a solr node to use a solr cluster.

I tried looking into this issue but I don't think we have enough information in 
the inner node to make such determination. For example, if I index two 
polygons: one L shaped polygon and another small triangle placed inside the 
L-shape (see blue and green tessellated versions on fig 1):

Then all I have on the inner node level are minPackedValues and maxPackedValue 
(depicted as purple rectangles on fig 2) this doesn't give me enough 
information to determine if my query bounding box (red rectangle on fig 2) 
intersects with blue triangle or not.

So, unless I misunderstood the proposal, I am not really sure how to achieve 
that on the inner node level.

This is already partially possible: several of the commands above have an 
explicit "zk-host" option that allows you to point them at remote clusters.  
You can also point at a remote cluster by setting ZK_HOST in solr.in.sh.

If {{create_collection}}, {{delete}}, etc don't accept ZK_HOST currently, 
adding ZK_HOST support is probably the easiest and most uniform path forward.

Some of the existing checks in expand assumes that expand is combination with 
collapsing which may not be the case.
Also, when expand.field is date field request fails with status 500

Hey [~ab], I noticed recently that I can seemingly still use (standard) aliases 
to index documents.

Am I missing something here?  I ran {{git checkout 
releases/lucene-solr/8.1.1}}, rebuilt, and can still see the behavior below:
