I am trying to understand why we ended up defaulting to "WhitespaceTokenizer" 
in the first place. I don't see any documentation that refers to this.

Makes sense. We should also keep in mind that with this change we might be 
breaking compatibility with existing solrconfig.xml. If you think this is not a 
concern, then i am good with the proposal.
