RE: [Mentors] Advice on branding of Apache NetBeans book

2018-07-20 Thread Delfi Ramirez
Hi Walter:

I speak on behalf of myself, but I am pretty sure the mentoring community will
agree :

Apache Netbeans runs under the Apache license, that is the license involved

Netbeans 9 differs subtly from previous versions. If in doubt, please, read the
wiki, all the doubts that may arise about logostypes and/or trades are
explained briefly in there

Hope it helps.

Hi mentors,
We're updating https://leanpub.com/nbp4beginners.
We want to:
-- use the name "Apache NetBeans" and "Apache NetBeans Platform" instead of
"NetBeans" and "NetBeans Platform"
- use the Apache NetBeans logo
Is this allowed? Must any text be added to the book to allow this? Any
licensing involved?
Thanks,

Re: [ module ] [ nbm ] [ jar ] Packaging external jar libraries into nbm for distribution

2018-07-20 Thread Attila Kelemen
It depends on what build you are using. I'm using Radim's Gradle plugin
, and it works fine: You
should add NB modules to providedCompile and modules wrapped into the nbm
to simply compile and then just run the "nbm" task.

Hint PopUp (Alt+Enter) in Editor (NETBEANS-1063)

2018-07-20 Thread Laszlo Kishalmi

Hi all,

Does somebody know which part of the code to look when I'm about to find
our the Hint Popup component display?

I'd like to see if I can remove the extra paints when we display that.
Right now we display an empty box, then paint the component. It looks a
bit unprofessional, while we could display the code completion and
generation (Alt+Insert) PopUp on instant.

Thanks!

Compiling on Windows & Splash Screen

2018-07-20 Thread Kenneth Fogel
I have successfully compiled RC1 (31 min) and created the minimal Hello World.
Then compiled VC3 (26 min) and when it started it wanted either nb-javac
installed or have me switch to Java 9. I installed nb-javac and my Hello World
worked. I have 46 sample programs that I use in my Fall desktop course, all
Maven based, that I will try out.

I have one comment concerning the splash screen. The text is far too small. It
should be at least 3x larger. Show it on a HiDPI (4K) display and the text will
disappear. This brings up the possible need for two splash images. One for up
to 2K displays and one for greater than 2K.

It means that in the other thread about the Apress book started by Josh,

well in your book.

RE: Apache NetBeans Apress Book

2018-07-20 Thread Delfi Ramirez
Hi John, Hi all:

As mentioned by Pete et al, the agreement on an Apache License, should not be a
problem for a publisher company. Based on experience no other reason

said that, below some mumbles and personal guessing’s, to your kind
consideration

• The use of a collaborative tool ( authoring collaboration environments ) to
print the result, is your decision.

• The main structure of the book as clearly defined by Gert, weeks ago. Three
main branches or chapters.

• The license and contract that featured authors may sign with the publisher, (
For example : “It is true that author have, and one else has, written chapter
number nine” ) shall be written in a formal mode before the publishing. Each
author and/or collaborator shall have all the third-party permissions required
before he/she presents the paper/chapter. Other authors and companies should be
credited, too.

• Errata and other classical editorial stuff should be in charge of the
publisher.

• Designer of the book ( cover, back cover, typography, et al ) should be also
credited, and work hand in hand with the leader – this is you – of the printed
collab project.

• There shall be indicated as footnotes, as an annex, or in the most feasible
way, links and or URIs where the reader and consumer of the book, who is the
final and most important part of this project, can extend or acquire the
information given by our community.

• As a tool of single communication between humans, and supported by the wiki
, besides personal interests, the printed book should be viewed a gift and a
need for the reader or our targeted audience, being us just producers of
content delivered.

• It shall be both oriented to the expert and the newbie, and those two areas
may have to be clearly indicated.

• Openness and opened doors to future members , highly recommended, shall be
also promoted

Your turn.

Cheers

Apache NetBeans Platform for Beginners

2018-07-20 Thread Walter Nyland
Hi all,

I’m one of the auhors of leanpub.com/nbp4beginners.

There’s continual interest in our book and clearly the Java desktop domain is
alive and well. Meanwhile, nothing comparable to the Apache NetBeans Platform
exists — and is now even stronger with its Apache license and backing by the
ASF.

We're therefore working on an update to the book, with a commitment to
quarterly updates, and of course everyone who already purchased it will
continue to get everything for free.

We want our book to be the standard guide for the usage of the core of Apache
NetBeans, i.e., specifically the platform. We have no plans currently to go
beyond that.

We’ll be rebranding the book. What do we need to do to use the new logo and
branding?

Thanks, great job everyone, hope the book will continue to be of benefit.

Regards,

Walt

When you use Wrapped Libraries, those JARs should automatically be wrapped
into the NBM.

Netbeans gradle plugin releases can be downloaded manually from here:
https://github.com/kelemen/netbeans-gradle-project/releases
There is one release there for Netbeans 9 already. Once the new plugin portal
is has it, I assume it will be downloadable through Netbeans just as it was in
previous versions.

I am developing a module for NetBeans IDE 8.2, and I am using the external

When I package the module into an NBM plugin file, I wish to package those
