IMHO it's misleading if someone wants to test a developer build (Beta, RC) and find an outdated version at a prominent place. 4.0.1 is the version that we encourage everybody to use. 4.1.0-beta is still the version we encourage everybody to test. 4.1.0-RC3 is the version we encourage VOLUNTEERS to test. The developer builds, RCs included, did not go through the acceptance process the beta had (we voted on the Beta and made sure it was usable before giving it to the public) and may have (unfortunately, did have) major issues. So they are for another target, the project volunteers. They are also on a server that cannot sustain a very large download traffic. In short: - General public should still test the beta - Volunteers should test the RC and use the, less visible, Development Builds link. It would be better (IMO) to place the URL to those developer versions with an appropiate comment. It is there, just less visible than the Beta box. And this is due to the reasons outlined above. Adding from SourceForge to download page
Last weekend, we had two separate discussions on the users list where users implied the OpenOffice site had been hacked or something since the download started from the sourceforge.net domain. Of course we know this is normal, but indeed many end-users don't know what SourceForge is and tend to be careful. Ok I did some Easter learning and I can confirm that this feature is broken (on Mac and Linux) because of the removal of the mozilla libraries. On Windows it is still working because here the Windows certificate store is already used. It's not nice and we have to fix this asap but that will take time and is not possible for AOO 4.1. Nevertheless would I like to propose to continue with the AOO 4.1 release. I believe to remember that we proposed and agreed on the removal of the mozilla libraries to get rid of this ugly old stuff. To whom it may concern: I have a macbook pro I am having some problems with openoffice.org. Yesterday I went to shutdown my Mac it kept on telling me to exit out of Open office in which I attempted to quit but would not allow me to shut down. Ultimately, I held down the shutdown button closed my computer. This morning I tried to download a document from an email i got this message: Either another instance of OpenOffice.org is accessing your personal settings or your personal settings are locked. Simultaneous access can lead to inconsistencies in your personal settings. Before continuing, you should make sure user georgeKaliampos closes OpenOffice.org on host 'George-Kaliampos-MacBook-Pro.local'. Do you really want to continue? (the option for no is highlighted I honestly dont know why I am receiving this message. I have never had a problem with this laptop or OpenOffice. Can you please assist me in fixing this problem? I think it is important to know whether AOO 4.1 fails safe with signed macros if it is unable to verify the signature. If a user has set security to allow only execution of signed macros and AOO 4.1 permits them to be executed without being able to verify the signature, then we have a much more serious problem. On Linux, OpenOffice document signature is done via the Mozilla firefox certificate store. On Windows, it is done via the Windows certificate store. I suppose the procedure is as follows: 1. Get/create a personal X.509 key/certificate with e-mail as the common name. Self-signed personal key/certificates should be OK. 2. Import it into the Mozilla firefox certificate store or Windows certificate store. 3. Close OpenOffice, including the quick run icon, if it is currently running. Restart it. 4. Save some document with something. 5. Sign the document from [File]=[Digital Signature]. Before 4.0, the personal key/certificate in the Mozilla certificate store will be shown in [File]=[Digital Signature]. On 4.1, this is missing. Digital signature is an important part to OpenOffice macro security and document integrity. If this is unintended, we will have to do something to fix it. So what happens to a document that was signed with AOO 4.0.1? Can you read it in AOO 4.1? Can you verify the signature? Same for a signed macro? I understand Juergen's point on the removal of Mozilla library. But I'm not sure if we can take this lightly. Documents that were digitally signed can still be opened and edited, but their signatures cannot be verified, and they cannot be signed again once they are modified. Document macros that were digitally signed can still work if their signers were confirmed before. But these macros will not work for the first time on newer installations unless their users change their security method. Newer document macros cannot be signed anymore, and the users have to change their security method. I do not know if this is serious or not. Sorry I found this problem too late. I think it is important to know whether AOO 4.1 fails safe with signed macros if it is unable to verify the signature. If a user has set security to allow only execution of signed macros and AOO 4.1 permits them to be executed without being able to verify the signature, then we have a much more serious problem. I'm not saying that this problem exists, but we should check carefully to make sure it is not a problem. -Rob Does anybody know more about document signing and how it is intended to work? Yes it was unable to connect in chrome, which might explain why my browser was hanging when I clicked request to stage, the backend code is probably blocking while it isn't able to connect to staging to stage. But apparently your compile got through, so in order to know where to tweak you need to find out which bridge was actually used. Then you can adapt it to your platform (operating system, compiler, cpu architecture, ABI). As I mentioned the platform independence of AOO's UNO subsystem was unfortunately not designed in e.g. by using plain programming language constructs or using portable mechanisms like C-linking. Getting a bridge to work was accomplished by brute force :-/ (reverse engineering the vtable layouts, symbol mangling, calling conventions, implementation details of exception handling, etc.) but if we're lucky a few tweaks to the currently active bridge could suffice. For an idea on what tweaks might be needed please check the evolution of the related x86-64 bridges for Linux, FreeBSD or MacOSX.
