Because, as the OP already mentioned, VCL uses X11 calls directly,
even with the GTK plugin.

I remember to have seen a mail / reply / complaint about a sort of ODF 
compatibility test by the - IIRC - ODFellowship.


My own archives don't hold it. But it must be know by someone here ..
