[OSM-dev] Interested in the project Less Wiggly Routes

2012-03-15 Thread Raman Garg
Hi,
I am a second year student of Netaji Subhas Institue of
Technology(under Delhi University),India. My major is Instrumentation
and Control engineering.I am good in Data Structures and
Algorithms,as for the current project.Besides this I am good in
Linux,CSS etc..

I am programming for the past five years and have experience in C/C+
+.In my day to day life I spend a lot of time in cracking computing
puzzles and won various awards in my college.

Idea for the GSOC:
I liked Less Wiggly Routes ,and am
interested in implementing the same.I first saw this idea on project
ideas page.

I think it is my project and am willing to learn more if guided on how to
proceed further for this project.

thanks

 Hello,
next week I want to publish the next big step for the cooperation between
 OSM and Wikipedia:
 http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/WIWOSM

This project will add an vectorlayer to the OSM-map in Wikipedia. The
content comes from OSM for objects with key=Wikipedia.

This is fantastic!

It would certainly provide a better slippy map view for Wikipedia
articles than the current single-point geocoding system that Wikipedia
uses.

I assume that this would replace the existing OpenLayers maps (with
OSM as a basemap) found for example in the German Wikipedia?

Hello Raman. Thanks for your interest in OSM's GSoC projects.

Before applying to be an OSM GSoC student, please get acquainted with the
OSM project:
- Create an account
- Use one or more of the OSM editors to add some data in your local area
- Understand the OSM data model
- Understand the routing software you would be working with.

It's important to us that potential GSoC students express interest in
joining and participating in the community.

So, check yours!

And that's just a few specific states I looked up. Is there any way to
do a search for all of the wiki instances of the slippymap component
that reference the osmarender layer?

Sysops can use the replace string extension, or anyone can use
AutoWikiBrowser.

Re: [OSM-dev] API changes for license change

 Hi,

I've made a Wiki page that details the expected changes in API behaviour
as a consequence of the license change.

If you do anything with the API then you should probably read and understand
this, to make sure that whatever you're doing will still work after the
 change!

 http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Open_Database_License/Changes_in_the_API

There's no testing API available yet because the changes haven't been coded
 yet.

 A very quick overview:

 * If you are only using API calls that access the current version of objects
 - e.g. /node/1233 or /map - then there's no change for you.

 * However if you do anything that accesses historic data, like
/node/1234/history or /node/1235/1 or changeset downloads, then there are
 changes that *might* affect you.

I think omitting the dirty versions makes the most sense. This ensures
maximum compatibility.

The rest of my comments are mainly cosmetic:

1. show_redacted=true seems long. how about redacted=true?

2. The redacted attributes should be defined soon, letting people give
feedback on the available values.
