Hi [~vasubramanian],

This makes complete sense, I am happy to help committing a patch to restore the
original logging behavior, [~dionusos] do you want to prepare a patch for this?

[~ericlin], feel free to chime in if you have anything to add.

Thanks,

Szabolcs

[~vasas] [~dionusos]

"The error means that the generated source file cannot be moved to the code
output directory, which is the current directory by default but can be
overridden with the - outdir option". But this doesn't take care of the below
scenarios:-

1) Technically if the "--outdir" is not specified in the sqoop command, this
would always result in error message logged in sqoop log if the current
directory has already a file with the same name.
2) Since this is not really an error, rather a product behavior shouldn’t it be
logged as Info message?
3) As better product design, new behavior should not change user experience.
Following impacts are observed:
A) Error message log which is a product design.
B) To mitigate the error message or having this actually worked, now user has
to modify all the commands manually.

Severity levels are used by many user in their monitoring system and such
changes should be thoroughly rationalized.

Please let me know your thoughts

The error means that the generated source file cannot be moved to the code
output directory, which is the current directory by default but can be
overridden with the --outdir option.

So depending on the use case it could be a real error because I can imagine in
some cases the user needs these generated files but in most of the cases they
care about the import only which is not impacted by this error.

So we could argue for both keeping this behavior and restore the original one
but I think if you explain the impact of the error to the customer they should
be ok.

Hi [~vasas],

A user/customer noticed the error message: *LOG.error("Could not rename " +
orig + " to " + dest + ". Error: " + e.getMessage());*. And I am curious if it
is a real error or not? Sqoop functioning as expected; so the message is
misleading? If it is not a real error (this is what I think) then I would file
a Jira to change the severity level of this message.

I am not sure it was intentional, does it cause any problem on your side? If
yes, I think we can submit a patch to restore the original behavior.

What sqoop version will this fix be embedded into?

> In class org.apache.sqoop.SqoopOptions, function getNonceJarDir(), I can see

>   hashDir = new File(baseDir, RandomHash.generateMD5String());

> // If this directory is not actually filled with files, delete it
> // when the JVM quits.
> hashDir.deleteOnExit();
> break;

> However, I believe it failed to delete due to directory is not empty.

Any chance to get that rebased and commited?

As a possible workaround the Sqoop Environment script could be used to manage
the contents of the compile dir this.

Sample Code
{noformat}
cat /etc/sqoop/conf/sqoop-env.sh
echo
echo SQOOP COMPILE DIR DIRECTORY COUNT
ls -ltd /tmp/sqoop*/compile/* | wc
echo SQOOP COMPILE DIR FILES COUNT
ls -ltR /tmp/sqoop*/compile/* | wc
echo SQOOP COMPILE DIR OLDEST DIRECTORY
ls -ltd /tmp/sqoop*/compile/* | tail -1
echo SQOOP COMPILE DIR TMPWATCH 60d DELETE TEST
tmpwatch --test 60d /tmp/sqoop*/compile/* | wc
echo SQOOP COMPILE DIR TMPWATCH 60d DELETE
tmpwatch 60d /tmp/sqoop*/compile/* | wc
echo SQOOP COMPILE DIR DIRECTORY COUNT
ls -ltd /tmp/sqoop*/compile/* | wc
echo SQOOP COMPILE DIR FILES COUNT
ls -ltR /tmp/sqoop*/compile/* | wc
echo SQOOP COMPILE DIR OLDEST DIRECTORY
ls -ltd /tmp/sqoop*/compile/* | tail -1
echo
