Re: S2 security fix release planning (XWork 2.0.4 is out)

2007-07-22 Thread Ted Husted

If your DSL holds out, go ahead and give it a try. If you run into any
snags give me a call at 585-200-2997, so we can sort it out and update
the notes on the release process. As mentioned, the only weird parts
are the signing and wrapping up the docs and J4. What really helps is
if someone can spend some quality time with the MailReader and
Showcase examples to make sure everything still works there (unless
otherwise noted). We still lack automated tests for the UI (e.g.
Selenium), and so testing the examples is still a time bandit.

O the provocation! Just kidding. It's a good idea, but it's too soon.
There were similar discussions about dropping struts-faces because it's
really no longer supported. The difference is the amount of time between
the lack of support. I still use Tiles 1 (provocation!) and, I imagine,
it's still widely used by others? The move to Tiles 2 will happen
naturally and organically, and then in the future, it will be an
acceptable time to perhaps remove it.

I see your point, Paul. But the problem is that, moving to Struts 1.4,
the Tiles module will be tagged as 1.4 version as well. IMHO this
leads to a false idea that Tiles is evolving (for example, the DTD).
Maybe in the "tiles" module in Struts codebase we could leave only
"glue code" (the plugin, actions as controllers, etc.), adding a
dependency to the 1.3 branch of Tiles development.
It's just an idea, and surely not the best, since I foresee a big
trouble if we find a serious bug in Tiles and we need to release, say,
Tiles 1.3.50 without releasing Struts 1.3.50 to adapt to Tiles 1.4.10
glue code.
Well, it's just thinking aloud :-)

Re: [s1] [provocation] Drop Tiles 1 in Struts 1.4

2007-07-22 Thread Ted Husted

Internally, it will be tagged STRUTS_1_4, and the JavaDocs will refer
to Struts Tiles 1.4.0 rather than Struts Tiles 1.3.9, but I don't
think that will confuse anyone. Meanwhile, Apache Tiles is now
distributing 2.0.4 (beta). More importantly, until Apache Tiles has a
GA release, it would be dangerous for Struts 1 to change its
dependency, since it could hold back the quality grade for the rest of
Struts 1.4.x. In Struts 2.x, Tiles is a plugin and a separate JAR, so
it doesn't hold back the quality of the Struts 2 Core JAR.

I'm sure once Apache Tiles is 2.x is GA, and someone does the
appropriate integration work, moving the dependency would be joyful
for everyone concerned.

No more than any of the other modules that get versioned and released
along with struts-core even if they have no changes.

We wouldn't. All of Struts 1 gets released together, even if only one

it back together for various reasons which you can find in the list

Struts 2.0.9 release (was Re: S2 security fix release planning (XWork 2.0.4 is out))

2007-07-22 Thread Ted Husted

In the interest of time, I'm trying to pickup where James left off

The good news is that I have confirmed that dropping in the new XWork

Anyone who wants a fix today should be able to replace the XWork JAR

The bad news is that I'm having trouble building Struts 2.0.9 against
XWork 2.0.4. Maven complained that it couldn't download the JAR, so I
installed it locally (using the script generated command), and it
still wouldn't build (mvn install).

I'm still "banging the rocks together" when it comes to Maven. Can
anyone confirm the problem, help me work around it, or confirm that we
need to do something on the OpenSymphony side.
