Thanks for the feedback though and for the time spent on testing.
It's definitely useful feedback for next release

Re: [DISCUSS] Release Apache TomEE 8.0.7 and 9.0.0-M7

2021-05-03 Thread Alex The Rocker
Sure, no reason to publicly release 8.0.7 binaries if they are too
much in regression vs. 8.0.6.

Regarding skipping TomEE versions like Tomcat site does, here's my two
cents: whatever works well for Tomcat for so many years should be
imitated!

Then we can simply leave it off the website and make sure to keep 8.0.6 on the
mirror system.

We wouldn't be able separate them 9.0.0-M7 uses all the 8.0.7 binaries and is
created via bytecode transformation. If we were in a situation where 8 was
good and 9 was bad, we could separate them and just abandon the 9 binaries.
Just not the reverse as the 8.x binaries are 95% of what goes into 9.

This seems like a good idea, but the current vote is for 3 sets of artifacts
and if it passes would we be obligated to release all to the mirror system? Is
it too late to have independent votes for the 3 sets?

Okay I understand that 8.0.7 is not usable because of the issue with
JAX RS, and that this is a "ghost" release to make 9.0.0 available in
time for Jakarta Certification.

We can add a Note in the download section for TomEE 8.0.7 and in parallel
working on the fixes to then release 8.0.8. We have been doing this for 9
milestones.
Up to this point we have been seen and living the benefits of the patch and
transformer plugging, this time I think we can add the note for 8.0.7 so
when 8.0.8 is release we are back on track.

Hi Alex,

I guess, that the links got mixed up.

The 8.0.7 binaries are in the 1182 repo:

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache TomEE 8.0.7 and 9.0.0-M7

2021-05-03 Thread Jean-Louis Monteiro
We have some backward compatibility issues in the JAXRS landscape because
of the TCK work we have done.
We know we also have some additional work to do in terms of packaging. And
other things.

The goal for this release is mainly a milestone for being referenced as a
compatible implementation for Jakarta EE 9.1 Web Profile.
This is still a milestone for TomEE 9.x

For TomEE 8.0.7 this is a maintenance and a feature release. Unfortunately
and fortunately, we share the same code base, so to reach our main goal, we
introduced some backward compatibility issues.

That being said, there is nothing that prevents us from starting to fix it
from today on and do another release next week.
In terms of balance, I see clearly a big win for the community to be a
compatible implementation. We are clearly standing by big players which I'm
proud of.

So with respect to the tremendous amount of time, work and energy
the community spent to implement missing pieces, and pass the TCK.

Here is my +1.

Thanks everyone for the work, tests, moral support.
Thanks David for the hours and fights you put on this release.

Hello,

I haven't found 8.0.7 binaries (only binaries at 9.0.0M7 link), is
that intentional ?

2021-05-03 Thread Wiesner, Martin
Hi all,

after quick review and discussion with Richard Z, we found JAX-RS is _not_
working out of the box for 8.0.7.
Reasons: see Richard’s comment below.

For the aforementioned reason, but with strategic goals in mind, my
(non-binding) vote is:
-0

2021-05-03 Thread David Jencks
Congratulations!

It looks like 1182 is TomEE 8.0.7 and 1183 is the patch plugin.

There are some confusingly labeled artifacts such as
apache-tomee-8.0.7-sources.jar

which doesn’t have any sources in it.

The sources seem to be in tomee-project-9.0.0-M7-source-release.zip
,
 tomee-project-8.0.7-source-release.zip
,
 and tomee-patch-core-0.5-sources.jar
.

Heads up that we are narrowing in in the last few TCK issues and there is
still some chance we can be Jakarta EE 9.1 Web Profile certified in time
for the Jakarta EE 9.1 release vote Monday.

It would be super super and I mean *super* tight

However, if we can get it done we'll need to do a release vote by no later
than Sunday afternoon and file our certification request. We don't need to
have concluded our vote to make the Jakarta EE 9.1 release ballot, we just
need final binaries of our own to be at least in staging and in the process
of our own vote.

We do need that vote pass, however, so that would require some pragmatism
on all our parts.

For that reason I recommend we do not try to push out a 9.0.0 final, but
go ahead with 9.0.0-M7. If there are some issues with the binaries we put
up for vote, unless they are legal issues, we can still release them and
immediately fix the issues next week in a subsequent 8.0.8 and 9.0.0-M8.
There's no reason to "wait", we can simply release twice. Version numbers
are free.

The Jakarta EE 9.1 release vote lasts for two weeks and an announcement
would happen some days after that. Ff we did want to push out a 9.0.0 for
the announcement, we'd have at least till May 17th to do that, perhaps even
the 20th.

The reason we want to get certified in time for the ballot is recently
there was a change that implementations listed on the ballot get a special
place at the top of the specification page. Any implementations that come
even one day later cannot be included and will not be accepted or given
special designation. This lasts forever and is a permanent advantage to
those in the list. It's also a permanent *disadvantage* to those not on
the list. It's eat or be eaten.

So that's what we're going for: A staged binary up for a vote here,
passing the TCK, in time to be listed on the Jakarta EE 9.1 release ballot
Monday.

-David

Hi Alexandre,

in 8.0.7, Tomcat is @ version 9.0.45 atm (TOMEE-2998).
We also updated the related web.xml files for mime type mapping (TOMEE-
