[~spbolton] really I don't understand how this is a duplicate of VELOCITY-677. 
As I indicated in the issue description the examples I gave are working fine in 
1.7. For me VELOCITY-677 is not related to string literal but to end of the 
script.

If this was already broken in 1.7 then I would not really care, as I said my 
only concern is retro compatibility. Same thing for VELOCITY-897.
