If you're using whitespace characters in values shown in a tree or list, t*hose whitespace characters are almost invisible due to the proportional font we're using*. Furthermore, whitespace characters *at the front and at the end of a string are removed for display* as we trim all strings showing up as values.This is quite a  *  usability issue  because  as  it 's e.g.  makes it  hard to find accidentally entered whitespace characters *, e.g.  in the configuration tree. You essentially have to double-click on a value to enter edit mode to be able to detect it at all.    I've attached an example, where I deliberately enter leading spaces in front of a number. This leads to an exception, as this doesn't result in a valid number, but it doesn't show in the tree, as the leading space characters are stripped away before being shown. They are still there, though. Some options to fix this I see are:* Do not trim whitespace characters at the beginning and the end. We seem to do so _for display (only !)_. This helps in copy+pasting values, but doesn't make trailing and leading whitespace any more visible.* Show the full value with a tooltip (would be a nice addition anyway), and use a monospaced font and marked whitespace characters to show it exactly as-is. Good for verifying a value and for looking at values, which are truncated. Not working on tablets and for copy+paste, though.* Use a monospace font in the value field: nice looking, but allows less of the value to be shown. We could deliberately only use the font in certain trees, such as the config tree.* Use a placeholder char when rendering a value (e.g. the Unicode "open box" character): not so nice looking and not working for copy/paste.

The tab order in modal dialogs is currently problematic once you're tabbing beyond the first or last element of the dialog. The browser then  *  switches to another element in the UI * , which is confusing, since it's supposed to stay inside the modal dialog. We should make sure we have a *good tab order* in all forms.* This should *include* (in this order) all input fields, the main buttons, then the tabs.   *   The tab order should *remain inside a modal dialog*. For embedded forms, it can go beyond that. * It should *exclude* all icons in the dialog header and those marking fields with descriptions. Such additional functionality can be covered by separate keyboard commands to be implemented later. Christopher has already done some research on this. It seems that it's *not easy to constrain the tab order inside a closed set of elements without "manual" intervention using JS*. Two options we shortly touched in a discussion was to have listeners on the first and the last element in a dialog that react once a user wants to tab beyond the dialog; or to remove or otherwise disable the "tabindex" HTML attribute for all UI elements, which are currently not part of a modal dialog.

This epic collects a set of issues describing still existing problems and glitches with the tab order in forms.
We've done some work in fixing the tab order, and it's actually quite good, but it also still fails in several cases, making it hard to work with Magnolia effectively and efficiently. Investing in this

When you switch tabs in a dialog or detail editor, the first field is correctly  focussed  focused  most of the time. There are cases, however, where this is not the case. This issue collects those as sub tasks.

Our tab order in dialogs and detail editors, which defines how the keyboard focus moves around inside a form in such a container, has made some great strides recently. It is, however, not without problems, because it includes functions in the dialog header.The *functions in the dialog header are meta-functions* and are largely unrelated to filling out the form - they *should thus be taken out of the tab order*. For a rationale, see    MGNLUI-3547.

With latest fix now when When  you  open  switch tabs in  a dialog or detail editor ,  the first field is correctly focussed  - but when you switch tabs, the first field  most  of the  tab  time. There are cases, however, where this  is not  focussed  the case .  It should be  This issue collects those as sub tasks .

The *purpose of  For  a  good  rationale ,  guided tab order is to guide the user from input field to input field and the action buttons at the end*. Meta-functions are typically covered using separate keyboard command (e.g. the "full-screen" option of dialogs or text area fields) or are otherwise linked to fields (such as the per-field help texts, which will at one point be linked using ARIA-recommended options).h4. A good tab orderMapped to our case, the rules for a good tab order are:WIthin an input field or container:* traverse input fields and buttons from left-to-right, then top-to-bottomWithin a form ( see  attachment):# traverse the form fields# traverse the action buttons# traverse all tabsAlways leave out:* a) meta-functions in the dialog header* b) buttons within a form that refer to meta-functions (we already skip those - _great_)This is the first set of rules. *Once achieved, a tab order may then be further optimized* (e.g. traversing the default button before all others).Note that for modal dialogs, a tab order must also be restrained to work within that dialog only - see MGNLUI-2747.

The order of  the  sub-apps (order of the tabs) can be changed by URI or favorite ,  if the app was not open before. e.g.  *To reproduce** make a favorite for the sub-app "roles", which is usually  showed  shown  on last position (4th) ,  if you just open the security-app. then *  close the sec.-app and call the sub-app "roles" with the favorite-link.=> now "roles" will be on the 2nd place. every Every  time when an app is closed and you call a sub-app with a location-link, the subapp of the location-link will be rendered always on the 2nd place (if its not the 1st by definition) according to Andreas this is a blocker.

We use tab names like "EDIT Andreas Weder", "PREVIEW /about", "EDIT /about" and "ADD untitled" for sub apps currently. I'd like to change that to *use icons instead of those action names*, because:* * more More  space* is available for the item title . *  once a tab is open and has calculated its width, that *width remains constant** we  We  can use icons to neatly *indicate the state a session is in* (edit or preview) and without changing the tab  changing . * which Which  makes it  immediately  instantly  apparent what state a sub app is in without  your  you  having to read anything . In order for this to remain useful, we should *restrict the number of icons we allow to be used* to only a very small set. I'm thinking of:* the  *  plus icon * , when new items are added* the  *  stylus icon *  for edit sessions* the  *  eye icon * , when a session shows an item previewWe might find we need one or two more icons (e.g. for a diff view). But for most uncovered cases, we would not use any icon at all, but simply show only text  (e . g. "USERS", "GROUPS", "ROLES" in the Security app - no icons there; a diff view could be '"About page" (V1 <> V3)' or similar). That even makes the regular cases using icons stick out some more. Please find attached various visual designs showing such tabs.

I've played with broken configurations to have a look at the current implementation of the invalid setting.
In one example, I've created a fairly broken YAML configuration for a new component (see attached file; placed it in hello-magnolia/dialogs/components). Instead of resulting in an entry marked as error, this led to a NullPointerException and the entry showed up as any other regular entry.
Note that the NPE does NOT show up while parsing the broken config file nor when opening the app - it appears when I drill-down into the broken definition in the Overview app.
The relevant excerpt from the log file:

2015-08-25 11:04:49,027 WARN info.magnolia.config.map2bean.Map2BeanTransformer : Property frm not found in class class info.magnolia.ui.dialog.definition.ConfiguredFormDialogDefinition
