GCC precompiled headers question
Hi all, this is an off topic question, but since I know that some of you are familiar with gcc, I am asking it here before signing up somewhere else. I have to source-compile one language (Modelica) to C++. Since Modelica has a structural subtype system, I'd like to create classes that way: //Modelica class Foo Real x; end Foo; //C++ template Foo_Real class Foo { Foo_Real x; } That means every generated class (and function for that matter) is (parametric) polymorphic and can be reused in other compilation units for subtypes. Unfortunately that also means, that I can only generate headers and no libraries or object files. Basically g++ plays the role of a linker for modelica. But this means that g++ will parse, check and compile every header again and again even if it's clear (at least after the first pass) that the code is sane. I've learned that the C++ standard delivers the export keyword to include template symbols in object files, but g++ does not support this. The closest thing I've seen to export would be precompiled headers. Unfortunately g++ also allows one single precompiled header per compilation unit. Does anyone know why? And is there any way to speed up the linking process a little (like letting g++ at least preprocess the headers or something like this)? thanks for any comments, Christoph signature.asc Description: Dies ist ein digital signierter Nachrichtenteil -- devel mailing list devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel

Strong NO vote. Replacing a robust and mature package with an immature one which may have security issues (in fact has had recently) should not be taken lightly. FWIW, ntp recently had a security issue too. The prime motivation of this project is a use case of intermittent internet connections of 5 mins a day. Yes, that was the original motivation when the project was started. But as it turned out, the employed concepts work very well even with continuous network connections. I still haven't seen one report where ntpd would perform better than chrony. I seriously doubt that is the common use case for majority of fedora users. It might be not the most common one, but there surely is a group of notebook users that connect to internet only few times a day. Aside - I also dont understand the motivation to start again and reimplement the wheel all over again ... What if it is a wooden wheel and we need something better now that we have asphalt roads. The core ntpd algorithms were designed 25 years ago and haven't changed since then. But typical network conditions did change a lot. The problem with slow convergence and slow response to temperature changes is acknowledged by NTP folks. It is discussed regularly in the ntp newsgroup, but they refuse to do anything about it. I doubt that the PLL/FLL discipline will ever be replaced. If you want ntpd to perform well, you will be advised to run it without restarts, on an idle machine, and in a room with stable temperature. Probably not something a typical Fedora user has. You might also find interesting that Linux kernel is not following the NTP specification and has PLL tweaked to use 4 times shorter time constant, even though it is strongly discouraged by the NTP author. If it was following the specification, the time needed to settle down would increase dramatically. and not take advantage of a mature product and work to improve ntpd or enhance it. It's not like no-one has tried. There were many, including myself. The problem with the NTP project is that the development is closed. Even the most trivial bugs take a lot of effort to fix. It's possible to pay them to be a NTP forum member and increase the chances of them accepting the patches, but that's not what I'd call an open development. Also, we are carrying an intrusive (and not very easy to port) patch that was rejected -- the power saving patch. They might be less stable that their widely used friends but they also might be more stable. I don't see this as a valid argument. Maintainer's decisions should be respected in this cases because he is generally the person who knows the package, in this case NTP, well. Especially when he actively maintains it for more than four years. It of course doesn't mean he should drop ntp from distro. It will be here for people who prefer it. I have to admit I was hoping I could drop it one day if chrony was the default client. There was a super accurate timing thread a few days ago. Certainly much newer than the alternatives, so I suppose it is also more immature. Still interesting, though. The RADclock client seems to be designed for LAN environments, at least the current version. It misses multiple source support and falseticker detection which is important in our default config, as the quality of pool.ntp.org servers varies a lot. However, many of the ideas they use are used in chrony too. I'd not be surprised if chrony configured for LAN performed similarly well as RADclock (in terms of absolute clock). -- Miroslav Lichvar -- devel mailing list devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel

4 Remaining OPEN F13Blocker bugs
Greetings folks, Just a quick update on the status of F13Blocker. According to the schedule [1], Fedora 13 is scheduled to enter the release candidate phase *today*, May 6, 2010. In order to enter this phase, all OPEN F13Blocker bugs must be in MODIFIED or ON_QA. The numbers are certainly moving in the right direction. Thank you all for being on top of your bugs. There are now only 4 OPEN (NEW + ASSIGNED) issues remaining (see list below). To get a bug off the list, you can ... 1. Resolve the issue as desired (followed by a build and F13 bodhi update) 2. Prove there is minimal, or no, impact to the Fedora Release Criteria [2] Use your last minute analogy of choice (end game, final lap, eleventh hour, don't cut the blue wire (just seeing if you're paying attention)). Today is the scheduled date for creating the Fedora 13 release candidate. Any delays in creating the release candidate put Fedora 13 at risk for a 1 week slip. It would be nice to have a brief update of known problems so that everyone doesn't start tracking their own packages' build failures to the same underlying issue (like Class::ISA or whatever was causing SIGSEGV on a lot of builds). Re: 4 Remaining OPEN F13Blocker bugs
James, These day I find nouveau kms can work corectly. After booting kernel and loading drm, then the monitor turns to sleep mode and leads to an all black. But I look for bugzilla and do not find out the similar bug report. Here is my HW: http://www.smolts.org/client/show_all/pub_2cfd8066-d0ed-4131-bb9e-04bbdcc0c7bd I have tested kernel-2.6.33.3-84.fc13.x86_64 and the latest nouveau dirver on Koji. It fails to boot into gdm. Liang Suilong On Thu, May 6, 2010 at 11:20 PM, James Laska jla...@redhat.com wrote: Greetings folks, Just a quick update on the status of F13Blocker. GConf error
Hi, Being the maintainer of Guake I have received a number of bug gconf related [1]. Their common pattern is that they only appear the first time guake is installed and run (and then again not always). If the user restart X/the computer, the bug does not appear at all. I am therefore quite unsure of what to do with these bugs. I asked upstream who also is not sure. It is like if the gconf schema was not correctly install while I install it via: %post export GCONF_CONFIG_SOURCE=`gconftool-2 --get-default-source` gconftool-2 --makefile-install-rule \ %{_sysconfdir}/gconf/schemas/%{name}.schemas /dev/null || : (cf [2] and [3] for build log) Why am I doing wrong ? Is this gconf issue ? That's the reason why Hall Monitor Policy is nonsense. Please enlighten me then on what new information was added to this thread that wasn't in the prior thread that warranted keeping it alive? one could argue that even that is now a redundant question that hasnt anything to do with fedora development and doesent belong to this list and is therefor redundant. thats the whole point that is beeing expressed here. it depends on the point of view if discussions are valuable, helpful, creative and have a positive outcome or not. and i want to add something else... sometimes if people come up with stupid ideas some other people read it... laugh... and develop a good idea out of some points of the basically stupid one. beeing creative requires to have input... the wilder the input the more innovative the output can be. as linux users we unfortunately are all a vocal minority in the world outside of the project. we are loud though and we get our ways. that might explain why some people are pretty loud and atleast try to drive their way... thats what alot older community members did the last 10 to 20 years. i dont want to find excuses or justify anything... just state a few facts to explain some discussed circumstances and some of the psychology behind it... since that seemed to be an open question in the meeting. one of the questions raised in the meeting posted by mcepl was... why dont those people leave if they are unhappy. simple... they put alot sweat blood and tears into a project, and they have friends... with the development crowd and with the community in general. they are obviously feeling as a part of it with just a different pov and an own opinion. that isnt bad at all ... but healthy... diversity is healthy to a project. and lastly just a personal opinion... i think what drives this project (and i hope the people i give support to in #fedora on a daily basis forgive me) are the developers. they are the most important entity that keep the projects alive and going. If we are good in what we do the users will come on their own... i personally as much as i love this project do not really care how big our user base is... i care how big our developer base is... and i hope that in the future we are not ruling out or excluding people just because they express a different opinion and try to drive it. it is exactly those kind of people that use up their spare time and work unpaid on projects like fedora because their heart is just beating for the project... else theyd have left for good and just used their spare time for other purposes. kind regards, Rudolf Kastl p.s. i am not claiming to be objective, just trying to interpret what i see. Constructive... additive ...diversity in opinion is healthy. But there is a line at which debate can turn unhealthy and destructive... when repetitive discussion becomes shrill in its desire to be informative...becomes over reaching in its need to be persuasive. Unfortunately what we have seen lately is a somewhat self propogating cycle that we repeat when issues are multi-faceted. People who have taken their shot at making a persuasive argument to change the minds of a particular audience can feel like they are being ignored when their arguments end up not being persuasive. Ratcheting up the heat( and number of capitalized words) in the next opportunity to restate their arguments brings more attention from others who have not noticed previous rounds in the discussion but in fact make the original audience more likely to tune out what is being said. And the cycle repeats spiralling downward towards a CapsLock doomsday as the participants become more entrenched in their points of view and less forgiving of other people's. Personal foibles and slights both real and imagined pile up into a palatable physiological barrier and people just end up talking at each other. For the sake of everyone's sanity we have to find a way out of this cycle. Letting these sorts of fires burn out on their own doesn't seem like the best way to manage our communication commons. And yes I'm throwing stones while standing in my own glass house, I can be sucked into bad behavior as easily as anyone else and being told I'm beating a dead horse is the appropriate thing to do. -jefIt's seldom going to end well when one of the most active participants in any thread proclaims at the start that they are burned out on the issues.
